A beginner's introduction to Fukaya categories
The goal of these notes is to give a short introduction to Fukaya categories
and some of their applications. The first half of the text is devoted to a
brief review of Lagrangian Floer (co)homology and product structures. Then we
introduce the Fukaya category (informally and without a lot of the necessary
technical detail), and briefly discuss algebraic concepts such as exact
triangles and generators. Finally, we mention wrapped Fukaya categories and
outline a few applications to symplectic topology, mirror symmetry and
low-dimensional topology. This text is based on a series of lectures given at a
Summer School on Contact and Symplectic Topology at Universit\'e de Nantes in

FAS-dependent cell death in α-synuclein transgenic oligodendrocyte models of multiple system atrophy
Multiple system atrophy is a parkinsonian neurodegenerative disorder. It is cytopathologically characterized by accumulation of the protein p25α in cell bodies of oligodendrocytes followed by accumulation of aggregated α-synuclein in so-called glial cytoplasmic inclusions. p25α is a stimulator of α-synuclein aggregation, and coexpression of α-synuclein and p25α in the oligodendroglial OLN-t40-AS cell line causes α-synuclein aggregate-dependent toxicity. In this study, we investigated whether the FAS system is involved in α-synuclein aggregate dependent degeneration in oligodendrocytes and may play a role in multiple system atrophy. Using rat oligodendroglial OLN-t40-AS cells we demonstrate that the cytotoxicity caused by coexpressing α-synuclein and p25α relies on stimulation of the death domain receptor FAS and caspase-8 activation. Using primary oligodendrocytes derived from PLP-α-synuclein transgenic mice we demonstrate that they exist in a sensitized state expressing pro-apoptotic FAS receptor, which makes them sensitive to FAS ligand-mediated apoptosis. Immunoblot analysis shows an increase in FAS in brain extracts from multiple system atrophy cases. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated enhanced FAS expression in multiple system atrophy brains notably in oligodendrocytes harboring the earliest stages of glial cytoplasmic inclusion formation. Oligodendroglial FAS expression is an early hallmark of oligodendroglial pathology in multiple system atrophy that mechanistically may be coupled to α-synuclein dependent degeneration and thus represent a potential target for protective intervention
A perspective on the landscape problem
I discuss the historical roots of the landscape problem and propose criteria
for its successful resolution. This provides a perspective to evaluate the
possibility to solve it in several of the speculative cosmological scenarios
under study including eternal inflation, cosmological natural selection and

Quantum value indefiniteness
The indeterministic outcome of a measurement of an individual quantum is
certified by the impossibility of the simultaneous, definite, deterministic
pre-existence of all conceivable observables from physical conditions of that
quantum alone. We discuss possible interpretations and consequences for quantum

To access the final edited and published work see http://doi.org/10.1021/jp071301z[EN] Fluorescence and laser-flash photolysis measurements have been performed on two pairs of diastereomeric dyads that contain the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (S)- or (R)-flurbiprofen (FBP) and (S)-tryptophan (Trp), which is a relevant amino acid present in site I of human serum albumin. The fluorescence spectra were obtained when subjected to excitation at 266 nm, where similar to 60% of the light is absorbed by FBP and similar to 40% is absorbed by Trp; the most remarkable feature observed in all dyads was a dramatic fluorescence quenching, and the residual emission was assigned to the Trp chromophore. In addition, an exciplex emission was observed as a broad band between 380 and 500 nm, especially in the case of the (R,S) diastereomers. The fluorescence lifetimes (tau(F)) at lambda(em) = 340 nm were clearly shorter in the dyads than in Trp-derived model compounds; in contrast, the values of tau(F) at lambda(em) = 440 nm (exciplex) were much longer. On the other hand, the typical FBP triplet-triplet transient absorption spectrum was obtained when subjected to laser-flash photolysis, although the signals were less intense than when FBP was directly excited under the same conditions. The main photophysical events in FBP-Trp dyads can be summarized as follows: (1) most of the energy provided by the incident radiation at 266 nm reaches the excited singlet state of Trp ((1)Trp*), either via direct absorption by this chromophore or by singlet singlet energy transfer from excited FBP ((FBP)-F-1*); (2) a minor, yet stereoselective deactivation of (FBP)-F-1* leads to detectable exciplexes and/or radical ion pairs; (3) the main process observed is intramolecular (1)Trp* quenching; and (4) the first triplet excited-state of FBP can be populated by triplet-triplet energy transfer from excited Trp or by back-electron transfer within the charge-separated states.Financial support from the MCYT (CTQ2004-03811) and the Generalitat Valenciana (GV06/099) is gratefully acknowledged. Spin - or, actually: Spin and Quantum Statistics
The history of the discovery of electron spin and the Pauli principle and the
mathematics of spin and quantum statistics are reviewed. Pauli's theory of the
spinning electron and some of its many applications in mathematics and physics
are considered in more detail. The role of the fact that the tree-level
gyromagnetic factor of the electron has the value g = 2 in an analysis of
stability (and instability) of matter in arbitrary external magnetic fields is
highlighted. Radiative corrections and precision measurements of g are
reviewed. The general connection between spin and statistics, the CPT theorem

Environmental volunteer well-being: managersâ perception and actual well-being of volunteers
Environmental volunteering is known to be able to increase well-being but environmental volunteer well-being has rarely been compared to participant well-being associated with other types of volunteering or nature-based activities. This paper aims to use a multidimensional approach to well-being to explore the immediately experienced and later remembered well-being of environmental volunteers and to compare this to the increased well-being of participants in other types of nature-based activities and volunteering. Furthermore, it aims to compare volunteer managersâ perception of their volunteersâ well-being with the self-reported well-being of the volunteers. Onsite surveys were conducted of practical conservation and biodiversity monitoring volunteers as well as their control groups, walkers and fieldwork students, respectively, to measure general well-being before their nature-based activity and activity-related well-being immediately after their activity. Online surveys of current, former and potential volunteers and volunteer managers in environmental volunteering and other types of volunteering measured remembered volunteering-related well-being and volunteer managersâ perceptions of their volunteersâ well-being. Data were analysed based on Seligmanâs multidimensional PERMA (âPositive emotionâ, âEngagementâ, âpositive Relationshipâ, âMeaningâ, âAchievementâ) model of well-being. Factor analysis recovered three of the five PERMA elements, âengagementâ, ârelationshipâ and âmeaningâ, as well as ânegative emotionâ and âhealthâ as factors. Environmental volunteering significantly improved positive elements and significantly decreased negative elements of participantsâ immediate well-being and it did so more than walking or student fieldwork did. Even remembering their volunteering up to six months later, volunteers rated their volunteering-related well-being higher than volunteers rated their well-being generally in life. However, volunteering was not found to have an effect on overall mean well-being generally in life. Volunteer managers did not perceive the significant increase in well-being that volunteers reported during volunteering. Multidimensional well-being assessments offer the potential for volunteer organisations and managers to more systematically understand, support and enhance volunteer well-being
The Beginning and Evolution of the Universe
We review the current standard model for the evolution of the Universe from
an early inflationary epoch to the complex hierarchy of structure seen today.
We summarize and provide key references for the following topics: observations
of the expanding Universe; the hot early Universe and nucleosynthesis; theory
and observations of the cosmic microwave background; Big Bang cosmology;
inflation; dark matter and dark energy; theory of structure formation; the cold
dark matter model; galaxy formation; cosmological simulations; observations of
galaxies, clusters, and quasars; statistical measures of large-scale structure;
and measurement of cosmological parameters. We conclude with discussion of some
open questions in cosmology. This review is designed to provide a graduate
student or other new worker in the field an introduction to the cosmological

The unexpected resurgence of Weyl geometry in late 20-th century physics
Weyl's original scale geometry of 1918 ("purely infinitesimal geometry") was
withdrawn by its author from physical theorizing in the early 1920s. It had a
comeback in the last third of the 20th century in different contexts: scalar
tensor theories of gravity, foundations of gravity, foundations of quantum
mechanics, elementary particle physics, and cosmology. It seems that Weyl
geometry continues to offer an open research potential for the foundations of
