Electronic structure and rovibrational predissociation of the 2sPi state in KLi
Adiabatic potential energy curves of the 3sSigma+, 3tSigma+, 2sPi and 2tPi
states correlating for large internuclear distance with the K(4s) + Li(2p)
atomic asymptote were calculated. Very good agreement between the calculated
and the experimental curve of the 2sPi state allowed for a reliable description
of the dissociation process through a small (20 cm-1 for J = 0) potential
energy barrier. The barrier supports several rovibrational quasi-bound states
and explicit time evolution of these states via the time-dependent nuclear
Schroedinger equation, showed that the state populations decay exponentially in
time. We were able to precisely describe the time-dependent dissociation
process of several rovibrational levels and found that our calculated spectrum
match very well with the assigned experimental spectrum. Moreover, our approach
is able to predict the positions of previously unassigned lines despite their
low intensit
Implementation of Remedial Measures to Contain a PCB Spill
A large spill of Polychlorinated Biphenols (PCB\u27s) occurred at Federal Pioneer Limited\u27s Regina Plant in 1976. The City of Regina is underlain by a relatively shallow aquifer which supplies a significant proportion of its drinking water. A remedial measures plan was developed to contain this spill within the boundaries of the site and clean up any contamination which had spread to adjacent property. The remedial measures plan developed involved limiting or reversing the normal downward hydraulic gradient. The three principle measures introduced to accomplish this reversal included the construction of a cutoff wall around the site, installation of a thick surface seal over the entire surface and active dewatering. The performance of these measures was monitored by an extensive network of piezometers and sampling well. Monitoring over the past seven years has produced no evidence of further downward migration of PCB\u27s
TOXICIDADE DO GOSSIPOL NA GESTAÇÃO E NA LACTAÇÃO DE RATAS (Rattus rattus norvegicus)
No desmame
gerados.
Gossypol toxicity in pregnant and nursing rats Rattus rattus norvegicus
Abstract
In order to study the effects of gossypol (C30H30O8) in pregnancy and lactation,
40 female rats (120 days old) weighing between 200 and 250 grams, were used in this
experiment. The animals were divided in four different group GI (n = 10), GII (n = 10), GIII (n
= 10) and GIV (n = 10). The daily oral dose administered by gavage to the animals of each
group was of 0, 20, 40 and 80 mg.kg-1 respectively of gossypol dissolved in canole oil. All
rats were weighed daily from the day of copulation (0 day) to the day of parturition, for
evaluation of the toxic effects during pregnancy. All rats and their offspring were weighed on
days 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 (day of weaning) of lactation. At the day of weaning, all rats
were killed in order to observe the number of uterine implantation sites. Eight rats (1 from
GIII group and 7 from GIV) died during the period of drug administration besides the
occurrence of abortions and cannibalism at the parturition. Clinical symptoms of toxicity were
diarrhea, inappetency, bristly hair, tachypnea, loss of weight. Neither pup displayed either
macroscopic or morphological alterations. Heavy poisoning has been induced in rats that
received higher doses of gossypol acetate as well as a dose-dependent decrease in body weight gain in pregnant rats, lesser weight at birth and at weaning. Nevertheless, gossypol
did not interfere in the maintenance of pregnancy and in the number of pups born when
administered from day 5 through day 20 of pregnancy

A diluição
contendo gelo. As amostras permaneceram nesta temperatura durante 8 horas.
inseminadas independente do aparecimento do estro.

Optical and Acoustical Methods in Science and Technology Optical Scanner for 3D Radiotherapy Polymer Gel Dosimetry
Sophisticated techniques employed in radiotherapy for irradiation of tumours require comprehensive dosimetry allowing for precise, high resolution measurements of radiation dose distribution in three dimensions and verication of treatment planning systems. Polymer gel dosimetry has been shown to be a unique technique for such the purpose. If exposed to ionizing radiation, radical polymerisation and crosslinking of monomeric components take place in a 3D polymer gel dosimeter, leading to the formation of large polymeric structures that scatter visible light. This feature allows for optical observation of the eects of the absorbed dose and its distribution. Presently, magnetic resonance imaging is employed most often for the analysis of the 3D polymer gel dosimeters. However, much attention is also being given to the development of optical computed tomography since this technique is hoped to serve as a substitute for expensive and not easily available magnetic resonance imaging. The optical scanner presented in this work consists of a laser diode, a scanning system and a signal detector. A 3D polymer gel dosimeter is measured in an immersion liquid in order to reduce deection of the light from the dosimeter phantom. The very rst results were obtained with the newly constructed scanner and PABIG nx 3D polymer gel dosimeter, which was inhomogeneously irradiated with 192 Ir brachytherapy source. The results have been contrasted with those for the magnetic resonance imaging and are presented in this work together with the description of the developed instrument. Currently, the optimization of the optical scanner is performed
A SOMATOTROFINA BOVINA (bST) E SUA RELAÇÃO COM O RECRUTAMENTO FOLICULAR OVARIANO DURANTE O CICLO ESTRAL DE VACAS
As
Diariamente, a partir
10º dia pós tratamento observou-se o maior número de folículos recrutados em ambos os grupos;
detecção do 1º FD 1,0 e 1,6 dias ; 2º FD 8,6 e 9,0 dias; duração da 1ª onda folicular 11,6 e 9,6 dias;
da 2ª onda folicular 8,0 e 7,6 dias; diâmetro máximo do 1º FD 18,2 e 15,8 mm; do 2º FD 16,6 e 15,0
mm; diâmetro do corpo lúteo (CL) do estro base 30,7 e 24,3 mm; dia do diâmetro folicular máximo
pós tratamento do FD da 1ª onda: 8,6º e 10,3º; do 2º FD 18,6º e 16,6º dia. Baseados nesses
The bovine somatotrophin in the estrus cycle and its relationships with the ovarian
follicular recruitment in cows
Abstract
The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of the bovine somatotropin (BST)
on the ovarian follicular wave of estrus cycle in cows. Six nonlactating cows Bos taurus taurus, from
which four Holstein Friesian, one Jersey and one Holstein-pingzgauer breed, were used. The cows
were submitted to a genital examination prior to the experiment, the mean body score condition
observed being 3.0. The animals were maintained on oat and azeven pasture, with corn silage and
mineral suplementation ad libitum. The cows were ramdomly divided in two groups: G1 three
animals treated with 500 mg BST in the third day post estrus; G2 - three control cows (10 ml physiologic
solution). Norgestomet implants on the ear internal face and intramuscular PGF2 alpha were used to
perform the estrus synchronization. The bovine ovaries were daily scanned by ultrasound, from the
estrus day to the following estrus, in order to detect the follicular development in each follicular
wave. During the estrus cycle 8.5 and 8.3 follicles bigger than 4.0 mm of diameter were detected in
G1 and G2, respectively. The highest number of recruitment follicles occurred in both groups around
the 10th day post treatment; five cows had two follicular waves and the other, one. The number of
recruitment follicles in each wave for G1 and G2 group was respectively: 1st wave, 7.6 and 7.0; 2nd
wave, 8.3 and 8.0; 1st dominant follicle (FD) detection 1.0 and 1.6 days; 2nd FD detection 8.6 and 9.0
days; 1st follicular wave length, 11.6 and 9.6 days; 2nd follicular wave, 8.0 and 7.6 days. The maximum
diameter of the 1st FD was 18.2 and 15.8 mm; from the 2nd FD 16.6 and 15.0 mm; CL diameter from
the estrus basis, 30.7 and 24.3 mm; at the day of the major follicular diameter post treatment of the
1st FD (1st wave) 8.6 and 10.3; from the 2nd wave, FD 18.6 and 16.6 day, respectively. In conclusion,
the isolated administration of BST in the 3rd day of the estrus cycle did not influence the follicular
recruitment between groups, except on the length of the luteal phase (p0.05) between groups. The BST effect appointed a tendency on the greater
number of recruitment follicles (p>0,05)
