    Equilibrium Clusters in Concentrated Lysozyme Protein Solutions

    We have studied the structure of salt-free lysozyme at 293 K and pH 7.8 using molecular simulations and experimental SAXS effective potentials between proteins at three volume fractions, 0.012, 0.033, and 0.12. We found that the structure of lysozyme near physiological conditions strongly depends on the volume fraction of proteins. The studied lysozyme solutions are dominated by monomers only for <0.012; for the strong dilution 70% of proteins are in a form of monomers. For 0.033 only 20% of proteins do not belong to a cluster. The clusters are mainly elongated. For 0.12 almost no individual particles exits, and branched, irregular clusters of large extent appear. Our simulation study provides new insight into the formation of equilibrium clusters in charged protein solutions near physiological conditions

    Accounting Conservatism in Transitional Economies

    Executive summary Prior research shows that accounting conservatism exists in mature economies. However there is not too much research about accounting conservatism in transitional economies. This paper analyses the influence of institutional and political factors on accounting conservatism in Eastern European countries which have already joined the European Union. I researched the levels of unconditional and conditional conservatism in Eastern Europe and compared them with Western European results. I did not find evidence that there is conditional conservatism in Eastern Europe. My research shows that there was conditional conservatism only in Poland during the analyzed period. I found significant evidence proving my expectations regarding the influence of the quality of law, securities law and the risk of expropriation on conditional conservatism

    Comics are beginning to rise in popularity today, but there is still a significant portion of society that rejects comics as an art form. The main objective of this project was to develop a product for the comic book industry with which they could tap into and benefit from a broader online audience. This project attempts to further what recent success the comic book has had in other forms of media other than that of print, such as movies, videogames, and motion graphics. Reaching out to new demographics on the World Wide Web and combining the comic book experience with an array of different types of media and technology can help make this success a possibility. Crafting a digital comic became as important as the end product itself, as close attention was paid to construction and user feedback in order to preserve comic book characteristics. By doing so this interactive user experience carries on the storytelling qualities of original comics. It garners interest in a larger target audience and elevates the comic bookto a new level of digital experience, in a world where newsprint production is becoming increasingly uneconomical

We consider a simple dynamical system that we assume to be a quasi-static approximation of a higher-dimensional system containing a fast stable subsystem. We tune a system parameter such that a stable periodic orbit of the simple system touches the discontinuity surface: this is the so-called grazing-sliding bifurcation. The periodic orbit remains stable, and its local return map becomes piecewise linear. However, when we take into account the fast dynamics the local return map of the periodic orbit changes qualitatively, giving rise to, for example, period-adding cascades or small-scale chaos

    Transport analysis of K+ production in proton-nucleus reactions

    The production of K+K^+ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions from 1.0 to 2.3 GeV is analyzed with respect to one-step nucleon-nucleon (NNNYK+(NN\to N Y K^+) and two-step Δ\Delta-nucleon (ΔNK+YN(\Delta N \to K^+ Y N) or pion-nucleon (πNK+Y(\pi N \to K^+ Y ) production channels on the basis of a coupled-channel transport approach (CBUU) including the kaon final-state-interactions (FSI). Momentum-dependent potentials for the nucleon, hyperon and kaon in the final state are included as well as K+K^+ elastic rescattering in the target nucleus. The transport calculations are compared to the experimental K+K^+ spectra taken at COSY-J\"ulich. Our systematic analysis of K+K^+ spectra from 12C^{12}C, 63Cu^{63}Cu, 107Ag^{107}Ag and 197Au^{197}Au targets as well as their momentum differential ratios gives a repulsive K+K^+ potential of 20±520\pm 5 MeV at normal nuclear matter density.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Eur.     Ectodysplasin A (EDA) - EDA receptor signalling and its pharmacological modulation.

    The TNF family ligand ectodysplasin A (EDA) regulates the induction, morphogenesis and/or maintenance of skin-derived structures such as teeth, hair, sweat glands and several other glands. Deficiencies in the EDA - EDA receptor (EDAR) signalling pathway cause hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED). This syndrome is characterized by the absence or malformation of several skin-derived appendages resulting in hypotrychosis, hypodontia, heat-intolerance, dry skin and dry eyes, susceptibility to airways infections and crusting of various secretions. The EDA-EDAR system is an important effector of canonical Wnt signalling in developing skin appendages. It functions by stimulating NF-κB-mediated transcription of effectors or inhibitors of the Wnt, Sonic hedgehog (SHH), fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) pathways that regulate interactions within or between epithelial and mesenchymal cells and tissues. In animal models of Eda-deficiency, soluble EDAR agonists can precisely correct clinically relevant symptoms with low side effects even at high agonist doses, indicating that efficient negative feedback signals occur in treated tissues. Hijacking of the placental antibody transport system can help deliver active molecules to developing foetuses in a timely manner. EDAR agonists may serve to treat certain forms of ectodermal dysplasia

    Business Intelligence & Analytics and Decision Quality - Insights on Analytics Specialization and Information Processing Modes

    Leveraging the benefits of business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) and improving decision quality does not only depend on establishing BI&A technology, but also on the organization and characteristics of decision processes. This research investigates new perspectives on these decision processes and establishes a link between characteristics of BI&A support and decision makers’ modes of information processing behavior, and how these ultimately contribute to the quality of decision outcomes. We build on the heuristic–systematic model (HSM) of information processing, as a central explanatory mechanism for linking BI&A support and decision quality. This allows us examining the effects of decision makers’ systematic and heuristic modes of information processing behavior in decision making processes. We further elucidate the role of analytics experts in influencing decision makers’ utilization of analytic advice. The analysis of data from 136 BI&A-supported decisions reveals how high levels of analytics elaboration can have a negative effect on decision makers’ information processing behavior. We further show how decision makers’ systematic processing contributes to decision quality and how heuristic processing restrains it. In this context we also find that trustworthiness in the analytics expert plays an important role for the adoption of analytic advice
