This volume edited by Carsten Meiner and Kristen Veel investigates how catastrophes and crises are processed by the cultures in which they occur. Drawing from many disciplines within the study of culture, the volume groups essays according to the categories of understanding, remembering, imagining, and desiring catastrophes and crises. A wide range of historical events, medial forms, and cultural artifacts enter into the discussion, which makes the book best suited to those seeking an expansive overview of and insight into the diversity of the latest cultural-studies work on the subject

This interrogation into the challenges and politics involved in specifying ‘the contemporary’ demonstrates that the plight of ‘naming the now’ is highly complex, never complete, and nonetheless well worth our while. Through close analyses of five literary and filmic genres, Theodore Martin proposes an innovative approach to historicizing the present through the lens of genre and generic change. This proposed path to understanding the present is particularly relevant for literary and film studies students and scholars interested in genre theory and contemporary cultural artifacts. However, anyone employing the term ‘contemporary’ without further reflection will find compelling reasons and inspiration in Contemporary Drift for adopting more nuanced approaches

Ashley J. Bohrer presents a compelling and forceful case for thinking about Marxism and intersectionality as distinct traditions that can nonetheless work in concert with one another. After citing the main contentions that exist between these two traditions, Bohrer ambitiously maps – through detailed historical and nuanced theoretical analyses – how seeming incompatibilities and critiques are more often than not erroneous, based on overly simplistic understandings of and miscommunications between sides. She pinpoints the ways in which these two traditions can be mobilized to work towards their shared ultimate aim of overthrowing oppressive and exploitative structures of racism, sexism, classism, and sexual discrimination under capitalism

This volume is devoted to exploring relationships between literature and work, two terms that assume a variety of meanings amongst the individual contributions. It is comprised of undergraduate and graduate student papers first presented at the 7th Student Congress of Comparative Studies at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and characterized by a high degree of eclecticism, with articles ranging from Plato’s notions of work and ‘the work’ in his literary criticism, to analyses of work in pirate fiction after 1700, to ‘work on myth’ in contemporary popular culture. While the variety of topics and case studies has a somewhat dizzying effect, each individual article is clear and compellingly argued. A highlight is Wolfram Ette’s concise introduction on groundbreaking theoretical contributions to the topic

Municipal Utilities: An Overview Of Rate Models, Sustainability And The Effects On Affordability

    Get PDF
Municipalities are faced with escalating costs, harder to find resources, and increasing regulatory restrictions in an effort to maintain public utilities. To complicate this situation, communities must address a growing number of individuals who are unable to pay their utility bill. This study is a review of several water utilities in Florida to determine how typical municipal utilities approaches affordability. Factors affecting utilities such as sustainability, rate models, and regulations are examined to the present methodology for an average municipality in addressing the increasing important issue of affordability. This research is a continuation of a longitudinal study to determine how municipalities address increasing costs to maintain their utility while considering those in the community who are less fortunate and cannot continue to absorb the higher costs of water and wastewater

Study Protocol: The Behaviour and Pain in Dementia Study (BePAID)

Abstract

Background

People with dementia admitted to the acute hospital often receive poor quality care particularly with regards to management of behavioural and psychiatric symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and of pain. There have been no UK studies on the prevalence and type of pain or BPSD in people with dementia in this setting, or on how these may impact on patients, carers, staff and costs of care.

Methods/Design

We shall recruit older people with dementia who have unplanned acute medical admissions and measure the prevalence of BPSD using the Behave-AD (Behaviour in Alzheimer's Disease) and the CMAI (Cohen Mansfield Agitation Inventory). Pain prevalence and severity will be assessed by the PAINAD (Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia) and the FACES pain scale. We will then analyse how these impact on a variety of outcomes and test the hypothesis that poor management of pain is associated with worsening of BPSD.

Discussion

By demonstrating the costs of BPSD to individuals with dementia and the health service this study will provide important evidence to drive improvements in care. We can then develop effective training for acute hospital staff and alternative treatment strategies for BPSD in this setting.</p

Membrane anchoring stabilizes and favors secretion of New Delhi metallo-ÎČ-lactamase

Carbapenems, 'last-resort' ÎČ-lactam antibiotics, are inactivated by zinc-dependent metallo-ÎČ-lactamases (MBLs). The host innate immune response withholds nutrient metal ions from microbial pathogens by releasing metal-chelating proteins such as calprotectin. We show that metal sequestration is detrimental for the accumulation of MBLs in the bacterial periplasm, because those enzymes are readily degraded in their nonmetallated form. However, the New Delhi metallo-ÎČ-lactamase (NDM-1) can persist under conditions of metal depletion. NDM-1 is a lipidated protein that anchors to the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Membrane anchoring contributes to the unusual stability of NDM-1 and favors secretion of this enzyme in outer-membrane vesicles (OMVs). OMVs containing NDM-1 can protect nearby populations of bacteria from otherwise lethal antibiotic levels, and OMVs from clinical pathogens expressing NDM-1 can carry this MBL and the bla[subscript NDM] gene. We show that protein export into OMVs can be targeted, providing possibilities of new antibacterial therapeutic strategies.Kinship Foundation.
