New insights from inside-out Doppler tomography
We present preliminary results from our investigation into using an
'inside-out' velocity space for creating a Doppler tomogram. The aim is to
transpose the inverted appearance of the Cartesian velocity space used in
normal Doppler tomography. In a comparison between normal and inside-out
Doppler tomograms of cataclysmic variables, we show that the inside-out
velocity space has the potential to produce new insights into the accretion
dynamics in these systems.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, conference: The Golden Age of Cataclysmic

Comparative advantage of potato production in seven regions of South Africa
The focus of this research was to investigate the comparative advantage of the potato industry in seven potato production regions in South Africa. Potatoes are the most important vegetable crop produced in South Africa. In 2008 it contributed more than 40% to the total production of vegetables in South Africa and it accounted for more than 20% of the value of all fresh produce sold on all the major national fresh produce markets. This study uses the Resource Cost Ratio (RCR) methodology that provides an explicit indication of the efficiency with which production alternatives uses domestic resources to generate or save foreign exchange. The Nominal Protection Ratio (NPR) and Effective Protection Coefficient (EPC) were also calculated. The results show that current policies that affects the input market for potato production in South Africa is constraining the potato industry. This was confirmed by the results obtained from the NPR and EPC analysis, and the size of the policy distortions was shown through the calculation of market and economic profitability. If current policies prevail potato production in the Eastern Free State will not have a comparative advantage, but in the absence of such policies all production regions have a comparative advantage.Crop Production/Industries,
Part 3: Medico-legal documentation Practical completion of pages 2 and 3 of the J88 form
This is Part 3 of a three-part series on medico-legal documentation. Part 1 addressed the knowledge and skills necessary to complete a legal J88 document. Part 2 provided practical guidance on completion of the J88 form in the case of assault. This article will focus on pages 2 and 3 of the J88 document, which deals with the alleged sexual offences of both adults and children. The assumption may exist that the J88 is the only significant document with respect to medical findings in alleged rape and child sexual abuse cases, and that the court needs this information to make a decision on the medical aspects of a case. However, the court needs the information to be interpreted by a medical practitioner, who must indicate the significance of the findings, determine who should supply relevant additional information, and then place the entire picture in context. This article attempts to highlight the value of the relevant aspects, while raising awareness of an unscientific interpretation of clinical examination. Keywords: medico-legal documentation, J88 form, sexual offences, pages 2 and 3 of J88 for
Clinical versus molecular diagnosis of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia in the diverse South African population
Objective. Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a common genetic disease characterised by strikingly elevated. plasma cholesterol concentration, which can lead to premature coronary death if left untreated. In this study DNA diagnosis of FH, which allows detection before onset of clinical symptoms, was evaluated against biochemical parameters routinely used to identify subjects with FH.Design. A population-based strategy was used to identify low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene defects in South Africans with clinical signs of FH, followed by a family-based DNA screening approach for presymptomatic diagnosis of FH.Results. DNA screening of 790 at-risk relatives for the FHrelated mutations identified in 379 index cases, allowed accurate disease diagnosis in an additional 338 relatives and exclusion of the relevant mutation in 452 individuals. The sensitivity and speeifidty of the diagnosis, based on total cholesterol values measured in family members of FH heterozygous index cases with one of the three founderrelated mutations, D154N, D206E and V408M, were 89.3% and 81.9%, respectively.Conclusion. The predominance of 10 LDLR gene mutations in the local population justifies population-directed D A diagnosis of FH in South Africa on a routine basis, particularly since expression of the defective gene measured in biochemical tests does not allow accurate diagnosis of FH in all cases. D A testing provides a definitive tool for family tracing aimed at pre-clinical diagnosis and preventive treatment of FH
