The relationship between economic slack and inflation has been getting vague and blurred recently in the monetary transmission models supporting the MPC decision making process. This paper shows that the relationship holds robustly for inflation measures corrected for textile, footwear, audio appliances and telecom devices. The prices of those four consumption basket components have exhibited a downward trend irrespective of what is going on with the rest of consumption process for already five years. The results are supported by the evidence from VAR.

In frame expansions, the least square signal reconstruction operator is called the dual frame, which can be obtained by choosing the synthesis filter bank as the para-pseudoinverse of the analysis bank. In this paper, we study the computation of the dual frame by exploiting the Greville formula, which was originally derived in 1960 to compute the pseudoinverse of a matrix when a new row is appended. Here, we first develop the backward Greville formula to handle the case of row deletion. Based on the forward Greville formula, we then study the computation of para-pseudoinverse for extended filter banks and Laplacian pyramids. Through the backward Greville formula, we investigate the frame-based error resilient transmission over erasure channels. The necessary and sufficient condition for an oversampled filter bank to be robust to one erasure channel is derived. A postfiltering structure is also presented to implement the para-pseudoinverse when the transform coefficients in one subband are completely lost

The Relativity Theory Revisited: Is Publishing Interest Rate Forecasts Really so Valuable?

    Get PDF
In a New Keynesian model with asymmetric information we show that publication of macroeconomic projections and of the future interest rate path by the central bank can improve macroeconomic outcomes. However, the gains from publishing interest rate paths are small relative to those from publishing macroeconomic projections. Given that most inflation targeting central banks are already publishing macroeconomic projections this means that most gains from increasing transparency in this area may already have been reaped. This, together with the potential costs, may explain the relative reluctance of central banks to publish interest rate paths.interest rate path, monetary policy, adaptive learning

Water Soluble Polymers Containing Weak Links

This thesis describes the development of a new method to confer degradability to water soluble polymers already used in the oil servicing industry. Generally, high molecular weight polymers with a Cā€“C backbone, like vinyl polymers, tend to be resistant to hydrolysis, oxidative cleavage, enzymatic attack, etc., and therefore they are not degradable, whereas hetero-atom-containing polymer backbones like esters, carbonates, amides, anhydrides, phosphazenes, etc. confer degradability. Redox polymerisation was chosen to introduce labile links into the hydrocarbon backbone of vinyl polymers. A variety of reducing agents that could be chosen provides a platform of polymers that can degrade upon experiencing different triggers. A redox pair consisting of reducing agents such as triblock copolymer poly(lactic acid)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactic aicd), polycaprolactone diol, 2,2'-azobis[2-methyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)propionamide] and L-cystine and oxidising ceric (IV) ions were used to initiate redox polymerisation of acrylamide, N,N-diamethylacrylamide and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The presence of degradable groups in the polymer backbone was studied using FT-IR, NMR and DSC. The degradation behaviour of the synthesised polymers was investigated by GPC. The polymer degradation was triggered in different ways dependent on the labile group which was incorporated into the polymer backbone. Drag reduction properties were quantified using a standard rheometer equipped with a double-gap measuring geometry, by calculating percentage of drag reduction (%DR) based on apparent viscosity. From the obtained results it is clear that redox reaction between a reducing agent and oxidising metal ion can be used to initiate polymerisation of vinyl monomers, nevertheless not all the systems proved to be equally successful. It was found that using a water soluble and hydrolytically stable reducing agent containing azo functionalities gave the best results and multiple labile groups were incorporated into the polymer backbone. Polyacrylamide with azo-links in the backbone proved to be as good drag reducing agent as polyacrylamide synthesised by initiation from the poly(ethylene glycol)/Ce(IV) redox couple, however it lost its drag reduction properties once subjected to elevated temperatures. From the carried out studies it seems that triblock copolymer poly(lactic acid)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactic acid) is not an appropriate reducing agent due to its low stability in water at low pH. H1-NMR spectra show that the reducing agent degrades during the course of the polymerisation and hence cannot be used in aqueous environment to incorporate degradable groups into the polymer. In order to use a more stable but hydrophobic polyester - polycaprolactone diol, micellar polymerisation was utilised. The results showed that using redox polymerisation amphiphilic copolymers can be obtained. It was confirmed not only by H1-NMR, FT-IR and DSC, but also by the fact that hexane/water emulsions could be stabilised by acrylamide initiated from polycaprolactone diol

THE CONCEPT OF INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL IN DEVELOPMENT SYSTEMS

    Get PDF
The human capital and structural capital constitute the primary assets of every organisation and more and more every territory: on urban, local, regional, national and global levels. Restructuring technique, technology, organisation of production and work (means of production, subjects of work, power factors and economic factors) necessitates great knowledge, competence and skills, as well as the right organisational culture and philosophy. These factors constitute the basic elements of human capital. Mutual dependency of these factors results in the need of proper management of planning, organisation and motivation as well as of controlling human capital. Business practice confirms the need of developing basic organisational features that would result in creating a unique corporate image. It turns out that an individual character of a company facilitates its winning competitive advantage. Shaping the basic variables in corporate resources enables one to identify technical, organisational, economic and social features. Creating an individual character of a company on the basis of primary material resources rarely brings the desired effect. The material character of technical, organisational and economic resources is a feature that may be easily copied by competitors. Among the distinguished features, only human capital may thus decide on the individual character of a company.human capital, intellectual capital

Multi-camera trajectory forecasting : pedestrian trajectory prediction in a network of cameras

    Get PDF
We introduce the task of multi-camera trajectory forecasting (MCTF), where the future trajectory of an object is predicted in a network of cameras. Prior works consider forecasting trajectories in a single camera view. Our work is the first to consider the challenging scenario of forecasting across multiple non-overlapping camera views. This has wide applicability in tasks such as re-identification and multi-target multi-camera tracking. To facilitate research in this new area, we release the Warwick-NTU Multi-camera Forecasting Database (WNMF), a unique dataset of multi-camera pedestrian trajectories from a network of 15 synchronized cameras. To accurately label this large dataset (600 hours of video footage), we also develop a semi-automated annotation method. An effective MCTF model should proactively anticipate where and when a person will re-appear in the camera network. In this paper, we consider the task of predicting the next camera a pedestrian will re-appear after leaving the view of another camera, and present several baseline approaches for this. Multilingualism and its affective factors: Narrative analysis of studentsā€™ linguistic biography at Universitat Jaume I

Treball Final de Grau en Estudis Anglesos. Codi: EA0938. Curs acadĆØmic: 2020/2021The emergence of positive or negative attitudes towards language learning, also known as the affective factors, can significantly affect not only students' academic but also private lifetime. According to Henter (2013), negative attitudes and lack of motivation of learners can turn out to be the major stumbling block to language learning. However, Henterā€™s hypothesis is limited because there are many other reasons which can affect studentsā€™ learning processes such as feeling anxious towards a language due to their personal experiences. Thus, the aim of the present paper is to analyze studentsā€™ life histories based on their language experiences, also known as narratives, at Universitat Jaume I in order to find out if any affective factors were present during the acquisition of a specific language. The analysis will be based on semi-structured interviews using 7 questions which will be freely answered by multilingual students between 21 and 27 years old. The study will seek to observe the affective factors which have influenced students more deeply, according to their narratives. Drawing from the semi-structured interviews and the analysis of the resulting narratives, the results revealed that most of the students have become multilinguals thanks to: 1) motivation and positive attitudes they have received from the people surrounding them; 2) positive attitudes because of their self-study watching TV series and talking with foreign friends. Nonetheless, there was one result coming out of the blue which had to do with religion affecting positively a devotee in her private lifetime
