Lack of class I H-2 antigens in cells transformed by radiation leukemia virus is associated with methylation and rearrangement of H-2 DNA
Transformation of murine thymocytes by
radiation leukemia virus is associated with reduced expression
of the class I antigens encoded in the major histocompatibility
complex (MHC) and increased methylation and altered restriction
enzyme patterns of MHC DNA. These changes may play
a role in host susceptibility to virus-induced leukemogenesis
and accord with the notion that viral genomes play a regulatory
function when they integrate adjacent to histocompatibiity
genes
A Photometric Method for Quantifying Asymmetries in Disk Galaxies
A photometric method for quantifying deviations from axisymmetry in optical
images of disk galaxies is applied to a sample of 32 face-on and nearly face-on
spirals. The method involves comparing the relative fluxes contained within
trapezoidal sectors arranged symmetrically about the galaxy center of light,
excluding the bulge and/or barred regions. Such a method has several advantages
over others, especially when quantifying asymmetry in flocculent galaxies.
Specifically, the averaging of large regions improves the signal-to-noise in
the measurements; the method is not strongly affected by the presence of spiral
arms; and it identifies the kinds of asymmetry that are likely to be
dynamically important. Application of this "method of sectors" to R-band images
of 32 disk galaxies indicates that about 30% of spirals show deviations from

Star formation in the warped outer pseudoring of the spiral galaxy NGC 3642
NGC 3642 was classified as a spiral galaxy with three rings and no bar. We
have performed an HI and optical study of this nearly face-on galaxy. We find
that the nuclear ring might in fact be part of an inner one-armed spiral, that
could be driving nuclear accretion and feeding the central activity in the
inner kpc. The inner ring is faint, and the outer ring is a rather ill-defined
pseudoring. Furthermore, the size ratio of the rings is such that they cannot
be due to a single pattern speed linking them together.
The outer pseudoring is peculiar, since it lies in the faint outer parts of
the disk, where star formation is still going on at 1.4 times the optical
radius. Higher HI column densities are associated with these regions and the
atomic gas layer is warped. These perturbations affect only the outer disk,
since the kinematics within the main body conforms well to an ordinary
differentially rotating disk.
We propose here that both nuclear activity and star formation in the warped
outer parts might be linked to the fact that NGC 3642 is located in a rich
environment, where its close neighbors show clear signs of merging. Our
suggestion is that NGC 3642 has captured recently a low-mass, gas-rich dwarf,
and star formation was triggered in this infalling external gas that produced
also a pronounced warp in the gaseous disk.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Full resolution version available at

Departures From Axisymmetric Morphology and Dynamics in Spiral Galaxies
New HI synthesis data have been obtained for six face-on galaxies with the
Very Large Array. These data and reanalyses of three additional data sets make
up a sample of nine face-on galaxies analyzed for deviations from axisymmetry
in morphology and dynamics. This sample represents a subsample of galaxies
already analyzed for morphological symmetry properties in the R-band. Four
quantitative measures of dynamical nonaxisymmetry are compared to one another
and to the quantitative measures of morphological asymmetry in HI and R-band to
investigate the relationships between nonaxisymmetric morphology and dynamics.
We find no significant relationship between asymmetric morphology and most of
the dynamical measures in our sample. A possible relationship is found,
however, between morphology and dynamical position angle differences between

The AMIGA sample of isolated galaxies. IV. A catalogue of neighbours around isolated galaxies
Studies of the effects of environment on galaxy properties and evolution
require well defined control samples. Such isolated galaxy samples have up to
now been small or poorly defined. The AMIGA project (Analysis of the
interstellar Medium of Isolated GAlaxies) represents an attempt to define a
statistically useful sample of the most isolated galaxies in the local (z <
0.05) Universe. A suitable large sample for the AMIGA project already exists,
the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies (CIG, Karachentseva 1973; 1050 galaxies),
and we use this sample as a starting point to refine and perform a better
quantification of its isolation properties. Digitised POSS-I E images were
analysed out to a minimum projected radius R > 0.5 Mpc around 950 CIG galaxies
(those within Vr = 1500 km s-1 were excluded). We identified all galaxy
candidates in each field brighter than B = 17.5 with a high degree of
confidence using the LMORPHO software. We generated a catalogue of
approximately 54 000 potential neighbours (redshifts exist for 30% of this
sample). Six hundred sixty-six galaxies pass and two hundred eighty-four fail
the original CIG isolation criterion. The available redshift data confirm that
our catalogue involves a largely background population rather than physically
associated neighbours. We find that the exclusion of neighbours within a factor
of four in size around each CIG galaxy, employed in the original isolation
criterion, corresponds to Delta Vr ~ 18000 km s-1 indicating that it was a
conservative limit. Galaxies in the CIG have been found to show different
degrees of isolation. We conclude that a quantitative measure of this is
mandatory. It will be the subject of future work based on the catalogue of

Negative Energy and Angular Momentum Modes of Thin Accretion Disks
This work derives the linearized equations of motion, the Lagrangian density,
the Hamiltonian density, and the canonical angular momentum density for general
perturbations [ with ] of a geometrically
thin self-gravitating, homentropic fluid disk including the pressure. The
theory is applied to ``eccentric,'' perturbations of a geometrically
thin Keplerian disk. We find modes at low frequencies relative to the
Keplerian frequency. Further, it shown that these modes can have negative
energy and negative angular momentum. The radial propagation of these low
frequency modes can transport angular momentum away from the inner region
of a disk and thus increase the rate of mass accretion. Depending on the radial
boundary conditions there can be discrete low-frequency, negative-energy,

Toward the optimal lead system and optimal criteria for exercise electrocardiography
To define the optimal lead system for exercise electrocardiography, data of the whole body surface potential distribution were analyzed in 25 normal subjects and in 25 patients with coronary artery disease at rest and during exercise. All patients had a normal electrocardiogram at rest. The sensitivity of the standard chest leads was 60 percent; it improved to 84 percent with the body surface map whereas both methods had a 100 percent specificity. On the basis of these data, and reports from other centers, it is concluded that a single bipolar lead from the right subclavian area to lead V5 is adequate in those laboratories that are restricted to testing subjects with a normal electrocardiogram at rest. In patients with a previous infarction or other abnormalities in the electrocardiogram at rest three (pseudo) orthogonal leads or several standard leads are necessary. Recommendations for optimal measurements from the exercise electrocardiogram are based on quantitative computer analysis of the selected leads in larger groups of patients. Best results were obtained with a combination of S-T amplitude, S-T slope and heart rate. The improvement in sensitivity from 50 percent with visual analysis to 85 percent with computer was similar to that obtained with body surface mapping. Changes of the P wave and QRS complex during exercise appeared to be of little diagnostic value. Quality and Safety Aspects of Infant Nutrition
Quality and safety aspects of infant nutrition are of key importance for child health, but oftentimes they do not get much attention by health care professionals whose interest tends to focus on functional benefits of early nutrition. Unbalanced diets and harmful food components induce particularly high risks for untoward effects in infants because of their rapid growth, high nutrient needs, and their typical dependence on only one or few foods during the first months of life. The concepts, standards and practices that relate to infant food quality and safety were discussed at a scientific workshop organized by the Child Health Foundation and the Early Nutrition Academy jointly with the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and a summary is provided here. The participants reviewed past and current issues on quality and safety, the role of different stakeholders, and recommendations to avert future issues. It was concluded that a high level of quality and safety is currently achieved, but this is no reason for complacency. The food industry carries the primary responsibility for the safety and suitability of their products, including the quality of composition, raw materials and production processes. Introduction of new or modified products should be preceded by a thorough science based review of suitability and safety by an independent authority. Food safety events should be managed on an international basis. Global collaboration of food producers, food-safety authorities, paediatricians and scientists is needed to efficiently exchange information and to best protect public health. Copyright (C) 2012 S.
