Magnon transport and spin current switching through quantum dots
We study the nonequilibrium spin current through a quantum dot consisting of
two localized spin-1/2 coupled to two ferromagnetic insulators. The influence
of an intra-dot magnetic field and exchange coupling, different dot-reservoir
coupling configurations, and the influence of magnon chemical potential
differences vs. magnetic field gradients onto the spin current are examined. We
discuss various spin switching mechanisms and find that, in contrast to
electronic transport, the spin current is very sensitive to the specific
coupling configuration and band edges. In particular, we identify 1- and
2-magnon transport processes which can lead to resonances and antiresonances
for the spin current.Comment: 10 pages, 15 figure
Passing through Dink – A Closer Look at How Couples in the United States Make the Decision to Have Children
This thesis explores how Dual Income No Kids (DINK) couples within the United States approach family planning. The study is based on ethnographic work I carried out over the course of 2011, including a nationwide survey and in-depth interviews I conducted in Atlanta, Georgia, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Denver Colorado. Specifically, I was interested in investigating why these couples were “delaying” having children based on the national average. While current literature points to changes in education, healthcare, and societal values as being the catalyst for the DINK movement, I wanted to understand Americans’ childbearing decisions on a more personal level. Through this project I looked at how both the social goals (parent and peer role models) and personal pressures (prioritization of education, career and marital partnership) influence an individual’s decision about whether and when to have children. As such, I also explore themes of identity, life narrative, and choice in regards to family planning. Whereas the popular stereotype of DINK suggests that these couples are uninterested in family or “family values”, my research shows that many couples actually choose to be DINK for a time because they are actively pursuing and preparing for parenthood
Real-time atmospheric absorption spectra for in-flight tuning of an airborne dial system
Real-time measurements of atmospheric absorption spectra are displayed and used to precisely calibrate and fix the frequency of an Alexandrite laser to specific oxygen absorption features for airborne Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) measurements of atmospheric pressure and temperature. The DIAL system used contains two narrowband tunable Alexandrite lasers: one is electronically scanned to tune to oxygen absorption features for on-line signals while the second is used to obtain off-line (nonabsorbed) atmospheric return signals. The lidar operator may select the number of shots to be averaged, the altitude, and altitude interval over which the signals are averaged using single key stroke commands. The operator also determines exactly which oxygen absorption lines are scanned by comparing the line spacings and relative strengths with known line parameters, thus calibrating the laser wavelength readout. The system was used successfully to measure the atmospheric pressure profile on the first flights of this lidar, November 20, and December 9, 1985, aboard the NASA Wallops Electra aircraft
Airborne Lidar measurements of the atmospheric pressure profile with tunable Alexandrite lasers
The first remote measurements of the atmospheric pressure profile made from an airborne platform are described. The measurements utilize a differential absorption lidar and tunable solid state Alexandrite lasers. The pressure measurement technique uses a high resolution oxygen A band where the absorption is highly pressure sensitive due to collision broadening. Absorption troughs and regions of minimum absorption were used between pairs of stongly absorption lines for these measurements. The trough technique allows the measurement to be greatly desensitized to the effects of laser frequency instabilities. The lidar system was set up to measure pressure with the on-line laser tuned to the absorption trough at 13147.3/cm and with the reference laser tuned to a nonabsorbing frequency near 13170.0/cm. The lidar signal returns were sampled with a 200 range gate (30 vertical resoltion) and averaged over 100 shots

Real-time renormalization group and cutoff scales in nonequilibrium applied to an arbitrary quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime
We apply the real-time renormalization group (RG) in nonequilibrium to an
arbitrary quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime. Within one-loop
RG-equations, we include self-consistently the kernel governing the dynamics of
the reduced density matrix of the dot. As a result, we find that relaxation and
dephasing rates generically cut off the RG flow. In addition, we include all
other cutoff scales defined by temperature, energy excitations, frequency, and
voltage. We apply the formalism to transport through single molecular magnets,
realized by the fully anisotropic Kondo model (with three different exchange
couplings J_x, J_y, and J_z) in a magnetic field h_z. We calculate the
differential conductance as function of bias voltage V and discuss a quantum
phase transition which can be tuned by changing the sign of J_x J_y J_z via the
anisotropy parameters. Finally, we calculate the noise S(Omega) at finite
frequency Omega for the isotropic Kondo model and find that the dephasing rate
determines the height of the shoulders in dS(\Omega)/d Omega near Omega=V.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Lidar technology measurements and technology: Report of panel
Lidar is ready to make an important contribution to tropospheric chemistry research with a variety of spaceborne measurements that complement the measurements from passive instruments. Lidar can now be considered for near-term and far-term space missions dealing with a number of scientifically important issues in tropospheric chemistry. The evolution in the lidar missions from space are addressed and details of these missions are given. The laser availability for space missions based upon the technical data is assessed
