Comparative analysis of patch loading buckling resistances according to existing and new Eurocode

    Get PDF
Summary: This paper compares the procedures for calculating steel plate girders according to thŠµ current standards Š•N1993-1-5: 2006 [1] and the new version prEN1993-1-5: 2020, which is in the final stage of development [2]. There is a particular emphasis on problems of resistance to patch loading, the interaction between transverse force, bending moment and shear force, and the reduced stress method. The differences between the current standard and the new version prEN1993-1-5: 2020 [2] are illustrated using specific numerical examples

Balanced scorecard implementation in construction industry

    Get PDF
This paper presents Balanced Scorecard (BSC) as a strategy-based measurement system that could solve defining and implementing strategy. Construction companies often have a centralized organizational structure, an undetermined vision, and an emphasis on maximizing revenue. Focusing on achieving and maintaining short-term financial success can cause construction companies to underinvest in long-term value creation, specifically in the intellectual and intangible assets that provide future growth

Ethyl Pyruvate Stimulates Regulatory T Cells and Ameliorates Type 1 Diabetes Development in Mice.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a strong inflammatory response causes the death of insulin-producing pancreatic Ī²-cells, while inefficient regulatory mechanisms allow that response to become chronic. Ethyl pyruvate (EP), a stable pyruvate derivate and certified inhibitor of an alarmin-high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), exerts anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in animal models of rheumatoid arthritis and encephalomyelitis. To test its therapeutic potential in T1D, EP was administered intraperitoneally to C57BL/6 mice with multiple low-dose streptozotocin (MLDS)-induced T1D. EP treatment decreased T1D incidence, reduced the infiltration of cells into the pancreatic islets and preserved Ī²-cell function. Apart from reducing HMGB1 expression, EP treatment successfully interfered with the inflammatory response within the local pancreatic lymph nodes and in the pancreas. Its effect was restricted to boosting the regulatory arm of the immune response through up-regulation of tolerogenic dendritic cells (CD11c+CD11b-CD103+) within the pancreatic infiltrates and through the enhancement of regulatory T cell (Treg) levels (CD4+CD25highFoxP3+). These EP-stimulated Treg displayed enhanced suppressive capacity reflected in increased levels of CTLA-4, secreted TGF-Ī², and IL-10 and in the more efficient inhibition of effector T cell proliferation compared to Treg from diabetic animals. Higher levels of Treg were a result of increased differentiation and proliferation (Ki67+ cells), but also of the heightened potency for migration due to increased expression of adhesion molecules (CD11a and CD62L) and CXCR3 chemokine receptor. Treg isolated from EP-treated mice had the activated phenotype and T-bet expression more frequently, suggesting that they readily suppressed IFN-Ī³-producing cells. The effect of EP on Treg was also reproduced in vitro. Overall, our results show that EP treatment reduced T1D incidence in C57BL/6 mice predominantly by enhancing Treg differentiation, proliferation, their suppressive capacity, and recruitment into the pancreas

Screening for Diabetes among Roma People Living in Serbia

Aim To investigate the prevalence of diabetes in the Roma population in Serbia. Methods We screened 11 urban and 8 rural Roma communities from October 2006 to May 2008 for the presence of diabetes. Blood glucose values, name, age, sex, presence of diabetes, family history, and obesity were recorded. Results We analyzed the data from 1465 Roma people, 953 women and 512 men (785 in urban and 680 in rural communities), with mean age of 42.42 Ā± 15.69 years. Abdominal obesity was present in 600 (41%) participants. Eighty seven participants (5.9%) already had diabetes and there were 76 (5.2%) newly discovered cases of diabetes type 2. Participants with diabetes were significantly older (F = 28.33; P < 0.01). Family history for diabetes was positive in a third of participants. The risk for diabetes was 3.48 times higher in participants with positive family history (odds ratio [OR], 3.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.37-5.1; P < 0.01). Abdominal obesity was less frequent in healthy participants than in participants with diabetes (X2 = 32.55; P < 0.01). The risk of diabetes in participants with abdominal obesity was 2 times higher than in the non-obese (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.24-3.55; P < 0.01). Diabetes was significantly more present in urban communities (X2 = 25.20; P < 0.01). The risk of developing diabetes was 3.65 times higher in participants from urban settlements (OR, 3.64; 95% CI, 1.99- 6.66; P < 0.01). Conclusion Prevalence of diabetes in the Roma people living in Serbia may possibly be higher than in the general population of Serbia and needs further investigation

Influence of stiffener and flange on elastic critical load of i-girders subjected to patch loading

    Get PDF
The paper considers the influence of patch load length, flange thickness, and stiffener's characteristics on the behaviour of steel plate girders subjected to patch loading in terms of elastic stability. The aim is to show the dependence of the elastic critical load on the mentioned parameters, through the buckling coefficients of the isolated web plate and steel I-girders subjected to patch loading. The girder without transverse stiffeners in the load application zone, but with longitudinal stiffener was analyzed. The buckling coefficients of clamped plate and I-girder are compared, and suggestions for improving the EN1993-1-5 patch loading resistance model are presented. The paper gives a brief overview of the ultimate load capacity of longitudinaly stiffened I-girders. Numerical results are compared with the results of current standards EN1993-1-5. The aim of this research is to single out the characteristics of the girders that have the greatest impact on the elastic critical load. It is necessary to come up with new expressions for the calculation of the buckling coefficient through more detailed and comprehensive analyzes. It is shown that the influence of stiffener and flange cannot be neglected because both parameters are important

Elastic critical load of longitudinally unstiffened I-girders subjected to patch loading

    Get PDF
The paper considers the elastic critical load of longitudinally unstiffened I-girders subjected to a localized load of variable length in the plane of the web. In the current regulations, the contribution of the patch load length and the flange thickness is not considered for calculating the elastic critical load. The influence of the boundary conditions on the vertical edges of the loaded panel on the value of the buckling coefficient is presented. An improved expression for the calculation of the buckling coefficients of longitudinally unstiffened I-girders is proposed

Mass transfer and microbiological profile of pork meat dehydrated in two different osmotic solutions

    Get PDF
The effects of osmotic dehydration on mass transfer properties and microbiological profile were investigated in order to determine the usefulness of this technique as pre-treatment for further treatment of meat. Process was studied in two solutions (sugar beet molasses, and aqueous solution of sodium chloride and sucrose), at two temperatures (4 and 22Ā°C) at atmospheric pressure. The most significant parameters of mass transfer were determined after 300 minutes of the dehydration. The water activity (aw) values of the processed meat were determined, as well as the change of the microbiological profile between the fresh and dehydrated meat. At the temperature of 22Ā°C the sugar beet molasses proved to be most suitable as an osmotic solution, despite the greater viscosity
