Emerging magnetism and electronic phase separation at titanate interfaces
The emergence of magnetism in otherwise nonmagnetic compounds and its
underlying mechanisms have become the subject of intense research. Here we
demonstrate that the nonmagnetic oxygen vacancies are responsible for an
unconventional magnetic state common for titanate interfaces and surfaces.
Using an effective multiorbital modelling, we find that the presence of
localized vacancies leads to an interplay of ferromagnetic order in the
itinerant t2g band and complex magnetic oscillations in the
orbitally-reconstructed eg-band, which can be tuned by gate fields at oxide
interfaces. The magnetic phase diagram includes highly fragmented regions of
stable and phase-separated magnetic states forming beyond nonzero critical
defect concentrations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
How Large is the Intrinsic Flux Noise of a Magnetic Flux Quantum, of Half a Flux Quantum and of a Vortex-Free Superconductor?
This article addresses the question whether the magnetic flux of stationary
vortices or of half flux quanta generated by frustrated superconducting rings
is noisy. It is found that the flux noise generated intrinsically by a
superconductor is, in good approximation, not enhanced by stationary vortices.
Half flux quanta generated by -rings are characterized by considerably
larger noise.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. in: A. Bussmann-Holder, H. Keller (Eds.) High Tc

Cooperative dynamics in doped manganite films: phonon anomalies in the ferromagnetic state
We present optical measurements of phononic excitations in
LaCaMnO (LCMO) and LaSrMnO (LSMO)
thin films covering the full temperature range from the metallic ferromagnetic
to the insulating paramagnetic phase. All eight phonons expected for the
Rc symmetry in LSMO and 17 out of the expected 25 phonons for the Pnma
symmetry in LCMO have been determined. Close to the
ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition both compounds reveal an anomalous
behavior but with different characteristics. Anomalies in the phononic spectra
are a manifestation of the coupling of lattice degrees of freedom (DOF) to
electronic DOF. Specifically, the low-frequency external group proves to be an
indicator for lattice modifications induced by electronic correlations. The
enhanced electron-phonon coupling in LCMO is responsible for Fano-like
interference effects of distinct phonon modes with electronic continuum
excitations: we observe asymmetric phonon line shapes, mode splitting and
spectral weight transfer between modes.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
From gamma ray line signals of dark matter to the LHC
We explore the relationship between astrophysical gamma-ray signals and LHC
signatures for a class of phenomenologically successful secluded dark matter
models, motivated by recent evidence for a ~130 GeV gamma-ray line. We consider
in detail scenarios in which interactions between the dark sector and the
standard model are mediated by a vev-less scalar field \phi, transforming as an
N-plet (N > 3) under SU(2)_L. Since some of the component fields of \phi carry
large electric charges, loop induced dark matter annihilation to \gamma \gamma
and \gamma Z can be enhanced without the need for non-perturbatively large
couplings, and without overproduction of continuum gamma-rays from other final
states. We discuss prospects for other experimental tests, including dark
matter-nucleon scattering and production of \phi at the LHC, where future
searches for anomalous charged tracks may be sensitive. The first LHC hints
could come from the Higgs sector, where loop corrections involving \phi lead to
significantly modified h to \gamma \gamma and h to \gamma Z branching ratios.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures. v2: added references, fixed import-order issue

Orbital Ordering and Spin-Ladder Formation in La2RuO5
The semiconductor-semiconductor transition of La2RuO5 is studied by means of
augmented spherical wave (ASW) electronic structure calculations as based on
density functional theory and the local density approximation. This transition
has lately been reported to lead to orbital ordering and a quenching of the
local spin magnetic moment. Our results hint towards an orbital ordering
scenario which, markedly different from the previously proposed scheme,
preserves the local S = 1 moment at the Ru sites in the low-temperature phase.
The unusual magnetic behaviour is interpreted by the formation of spin-ladders,
which result from the structural changes occurring at the transition and are
characterized by antiferromagnetic coupling along the rungs.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, for more information see

Large and Small Polaron Excitations in La2/3(Sr/Ca)1/3MnO3 Films
We present detailed optical measurements of the mid-infrared (MIR)
excitations in thin films of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) and La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO)
across the magnetic transition. The shape of the excitation at about 0.2 eV in
both samples is analyzed in terms of polaron models. We propose to identify the
MIR resonance in LSMO as the excitation of large polarons and that in LCMO as a
small polaron excitation. A scaling behavior for the low-energy side of the
polaronic MIR resonance in LSMO is established
Metal-Insulator Transition of the LaAlO3-SrTiO3 Interface Electron System
We report on a metal-insulator transition in the LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interface
electron system, of which the carrier density is tuned by an electric gate
field. Below a critical carrier density n_c ranging from 0.5-1.5 * 10^13/cm^2,
LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interfaces, forming drain-source channels in field-effect devices
are non-ohmic. The differential resistance at zero channel bias diverges within
a 2% variation of the carrier density. Above n_c, the conductivity of the ohmic
channels has a metal-like temperature dependence, while below n_c conductivity
sets in only above a threshold electric field. For a given thickness of the
LaAlO3 layer, the conductivity follows a sigma_0 ~(n - n_c)/n_c characteristic.
The metal-insulator transition is found to be distinct from that of the
semiconductor 2D systems.Comment: 4 figure
