A Search for X-Ray Bright Distant Clusters of Galaxies
We present the results of a search for X--ray luminous distant clusters of
galaxies. We found extended X--ray emission characteristic of a cluster towards
two of our candidate clusters of galaxies. They both have a luminosity in the
ROSAT bandpass of and a redshift of ;
thus making them two of the most distant X--ray clusters ever observed.
Furthermore, we show that both clusters are optically rich and have a known
radio source associated with them. We compare our result with other recent
searches for distant X--ray luminous clusters and present a lower limit of
for the number density of such high redshift
clusters. This limit is consistent with the expected abundance of such clusters
in a standard (b=2) Cold Dark Matter Universe. Finally, our clusters provide
important high redshift targets for further study into the origin and evolution
of massive clusters of galaxies. Accepted for publication in the 10th September

Radius Dependent Luminosity Evolution of Blue Galaxies in GOODS-N
We examine the radius-luminosity (R-L) relation for blue galaxies in the Team
Keck Redshift Survey (TKRS) of GOODS-N. We compare with a volume-limited, Sloan
Digital Sky Survey sample and find that the R-L relation has evolved to lower
surface brightness since z=1. Based on the detection limits of GOODS this can
not be explained by incompleteness in low surface-brightness galaxies. Number
density arguments rule out a pure radius evolution. It can be explained by a
radius dependent decline in B-band luminosity with time. Assuming a linear
shift in M_B with z, we use a maximum likelihood method to quantify the
evolution. Under these assumptions, large (R_{1/2} > 5 kpc), and intermediate
sized (3 < R_{1/2} < 5 kpc) galaxies, have experienced Delta M_B =1.53
(-0.10,+0.13) and 1.65 (-0.18, +0.08) magnitudes of dimming since z=1. A simple
exponential decline in star formation with an e-folding time of 3 Gyr can
result in this amount of dimming. Meanwhile, small galaxies, or some subset
thereof, have experienced more evolution, 2.55 (+/- 0.38) magnitudes. This
factor of ten decline in luminosity can be explained by sub-samples of
starbursting dwarf systems that fade rapidly, coupled with a decline in burst
strength or frequency. Samples of bursting, luminous, blue, compact galaxies at
intermediate redshifts have been identified by various previous studies. If
there has been some growth in galaxy size with time, these measurements are

ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF THE CATTLE FEEDING INDUSTRY IN THE NORTHERN PLAINS AND WESTERN LAKES STATES - SUMMARY
The five-state study area of the Northern Plains and Western Lakes States, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, has adequate feed supplies and feeder cattle to markedly increase cattle feeding. Feed costs in these states have historically been lower than in the Southern Plains States. However, higher transportation costs appear to offset that advantage. Close access to slaughter plants in these states could offset that transportation disadvantage. Backgrounding of cattle appears to be quite profitable and cattle feeding, especially in larger sized feedlots, can be profitable. However, the cattle feeding industry has an increasing level of excess capacity. To be successful, new feedlots in the Northern Plains and Western Lakes States would need cost efficiencies to offset higher production costs, compared to Nebraska and Kansas, or would need to produce for a niche market unaffected by the lower operating costs of already established feedlots in the Central and Southern Plains States. Finally, a range of strategies are available in developing value-added cattle production in the Northern Plains and Western Lakes States. The role of need for self-expression and arousal to commit university students for environmental responsibility behaviours
University social responsibility as recycling and environmental protection attitude is a core issue in higher education. However, scarce research examines the factors that influence individuals’ commitment to recycling and environmental preservation, and even less explores how that commitment can lead to preferential behavior, word of mouth and willingness to sacrifice for recycling and environmental preservation. This study examines the roles of need for self-expression and arousal to explain commitment and whether commitment leads to those behaviors. The study is duplicated in three countries, each representing different cultural dimensions. Data collected from participants at Universities in South Korea, the United States and Portugal inform a model that supports the majority of the hypotheses and points out some interesting differences in the ways that recycling and environmental preservation should be presented in various cultures to achieve buy-in and behavior change.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Effects of atmospherics on emotions and intention with respect to involvement under different shopping environments
The present study deals with the S–O–R framework. The past five decades of research have successful validate the S–O–R model in offline and online contexts. However, there is still room for improvements. In particular, hedonic aspects have been proposed as distinctive aspects to differentiate companies. Previous researchers have (i) been somewhat reluctant to investigate dominance and other emotional responses; and (ii) produced mixed results regarding the impact of atmospherics and emotional responses on behavior. Building on this tradition of research, this study investigates the S-O-R model by incorporating delight as an attitudinal emotional response and tests the moderating effects of consumers’ involvement and shopping environment (three-way interactional effects) in connection with the links among atmospherics, emotions and intentions. The current findings demonstrate that the model fit better for low involvement consumers than for high involvement consumers. Serological evidence of exposure to Rickettsia felis and Rickettsia typhi in Australian veterinarians
BACKGROUND: Rickettsia felis and Rickettsia typhi are emerging arthropod-borne zoonoses causing fever and flu-like symptoms. Seroprevalence and risk factors associated with exposure to these organisms was explored in Australian veterinarians. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-one veterinarians from across Australia were recruited to participate in a cross-sectional survey. Veterinarians provided a single blood sample and answered a questionnaire on potential risk factors influencing their exposure to R. felis and R. typhi. Indirect microimmunofluorescence antibody testing (IFAT) was used to identify evidence of serological exposure of the participants to R. felis and R. typhi. Results were analyzed and a logistical regression model performed to predict risk factors associated with seropositivity. RESULTS: In total, 16.0% of participants were seropositive to R. felis, 4.6% to R. typhi and 35.1% seropositive to both, where cross-reactivity of the IFAT between R. felis and R. typhi precluded a definitive diagnosis. Veterinarians residing within the south-eastern states of Victoria and Tasmania were at a higher risk of exposure to R. felis or generalised R. felis or R. typhi exposure. Older veterinarians and those that recommended flea treatment to their clients were found to be significantly protected from exposure. CONCLUSIONS: The high exposure to R. felis amongst veterinary professionals suggests that flea-borne spotted fever is an important cause of undifferentiated fever conditions that may not be adequately recognized in Australia
The Asymptotic Giant Branch and the Tip of the Red Giant Branch as Probes of Star Formation History: The Nearby Dwarf Irregular Galaxy KKH 98
We investigate the utility of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and the red
giant branch (RGB) as probes of the star formation history (SFH) of the nearby
(D=2.5 Mpc) dwarf irregular galaxy, KKH 98. Near-infrared (IR) Keck Laser Guide
Star Adaptive Optics (AO) images resolve 592 IR bright stars reaching over 1
magnitude below the Tip of the Red Giant Branch. Significantly deeper optical
(F475W and F814W) Hubble Space Telescope images of the same field contain over
2500 stars, reaching to the Red Clump and the Main Sequence turn-off for 0.5
Gyr old populations. Compared to the optical color magnitude diagram (CMD), the
near-IR CMD shows significantly tighter AGB sequences, providing a good probe
of the intermediate age (0.5 - 5 Gyr) populations. We match observed CMDs with
stellar evolution models to recover the SFH of KKH 98. On average, the galaxy
has experienced relatively constant low-level star formation (5 x 10^-4 Mo
yr^-1) for much of cosmic time. Except for the youngest main sequence
populations (age < 0.1 Gyr), which are typically fainter than the AO data flux
limit, the SFH estimated from the the 592 IR bright stars is a reasonable match
to that derived from the much larger optical data set. Differences between the
optical and IR derived SFHs for 0.1 - 1 Gyr populations suggest that current
stellar evolution models may be over-producing the AGB by as much as a factor
of three in this galaxy. At the depth of the AO data, the IR luminous stars are
not crowded. Therefore these techniques can potentially be used to determine

Adiabatic Domain Wall Motion and Landau-Lifshitz Damping
Recent theory and measurements of the velocity of current-driven domain walls
in magnetic nanowires have re-opened the unresolved question of whether
Landau-Lifshitz damping or Gilbert damping provides the more natural
description of dissipative magnetization dynamics. In this paper, we argue that
(as in the past) experiment cannot distinguish the two, but that
Landau-Lifshitz damping nevertheless provides the most physically sensible
interpretation of the equation of motion. From this perspective, (i) adiabatic
spin-transfer torque dominates the dynamics with small corrections from
non-adiabatic effects; (ii) the damping always decreases the magnetic free
energy, and (iii) microscopic calculations of damping become consistent with
general statistical and thermodynamic considerations
