A historical reflection on the discovery of human retroviruses

The discovery of HIV-1 as the cause of AIDS was one of the major scientific achievements during the last century. Here the events leading to this discovery are reviewed with particular attention to priority and actual contributions by those involved. Since I would argue that discovering HIV was dependent on the previous discovery of the first human retrovirus HTLV-I, the history of this discovery is also re-examined. The first human retroviruses (HTLV-I) was first reported by Robert C. Gallo and coworkers in 1980 and reconfirmed by Yorio Hinuma and coworkers in 1981. These discoveries were in turn dependent on the previous discovery by Gallo and coworkers in 1976 of interleukin 2 or T-cell growth factor as it was called then. HTLV-II was described by Gallo's group in 1982. A human retrovirus distinct from HTLV-I and HTLV-II in that it was shown to have the morphology of a lentivirus was in my mind described for the first time by Luc Montagnier in an oral presentation at Cold Spring Harbor in September of 1983. This virus was isolated from a patient with lymphadenopathy using the protocol previously described for HTLV by Gallo. The first peer reviewed paper by Montagnier's group of such a retrovirus, isolated from two siblings of whom one with AIDS, appeared in Lancet in April of 1984. However, the proof that a new human retrovirus (HIV-1) was the cause of AIDS was first established in four publications by Gallo's group in the May 4th issue of Science in 1984

London's bus network is one of the largest and most comprehensive urban transport systems in the world. The contribution of buses is recognised by implementing a series of initiatives including bus priority at traffic signals. London has a long history of the implementation of bus priority at traffic signals. It has kept pace with the development of new technologies by updating its bus priority system. Now, London is moving towards a bus management system based on global positioning system (GPS), which will also be used to provide bus priority at traffic signals. The authors describe theoretical work carried out by TRG on behalf of Transport for London Bus Priority Team to tackle the challenge posed by locational error associated with GPS where a traffic signal is close to a bus stop

In my thesis examination we will step back in time to those early years of aids before science had any answers. Until one medical researcher proved what others could not; that retroviruses do exist in man. This single discovery gave birth to the field of human retrovirology; and to the hypothesis that perhaps this killing epidemic was in fact caused by a retrovirus. Dr. Robert c. Gallo’s laboratory eventually proved this theory correct. However, Gallo’s discovery also triggered an unparalleled controversy. In my probe, I prove what allegations are false, and which are true. These are supported by the many documents, notes, letters, and confidential memos that have been acquired. additionally, this work offers something vital no other ever has before; full access to all the American scientists directly involved in this story; plus in-depth interviews and documents from the french side as well. New revelations have come to light, now that some original, protective relationships have fractured within the french camp. This is a valuable step towards halting some of the fabrications associated with this story from ever becoming historical fact. Most important ofall, I was given unrestricted, unsupervised access to files from many sources; including all personal files belonging to Dr. Gallo himself! He has never before shared any of these files ever. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. This paper is heavily researched and one that finally focuses light on the true evidence of this very tangled tale. It also charts when the disease came to light, how it spread, how many became infected, as well as landmark people and events that shaped the history of aids in the United States. With a month by month chronology of discoveries, disputes, decisions, and verdicts that has never been done before, anywhere else. Included with the narrative are documents important to proving how key events transpired. Consequences of many actions by many people and entities are thoroughly examined, and contamination trails are followed back to their source. This thesis is to serve as an honest record of many scientific facts, detailing events in those early years of discovery when the coming blight of an aids epidemic was not quite known to the world. Από την μοναδική αυτή ανακάλυψη προέκυψε το επιστημονικό πεδίο της ανθρώπινης ρετροϊολογίας. Και στην υπόθεση ότι η θανατηφόρα επιδημία προκαλει έναν ρετροΐο, το εργαστήριο του δόκτορος Robert Gallo απέδειξε ότι η θεωρία αυτή είναι ενδεχομένως σωστή.
