    Prevalence of allergic rhinitis and asthma in Poland in relation to pollen counts

    Introduction: Despite the known role of pollen allergens in causing allergy symptoms in sensitized individuals, there are few publications investigating the relationship between pollen exposure in different regions and the prevalence of inhalant allergy. Aim: To assess the association between the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and asthma and the degree of exposure to pollen in various regions of Poland. Material and methods: Completed questionnaires of 9,443 subjects living in four urban centres (Wroclaw, Katowice, Warsaw, Bialystok), collected within part of the ECAP project, were analyzed. Children aged 6–7 (n = 2 278), adolescents aged 13–14 (n = 2 418), and adults aged 20–44 (n = 4 747) constituted 24.2%, 25.6% and 50.3% of the respondents, respectively. The clinical part (including skin prick tests, an assay of Timothy grass-specific IgE), was attended by 24% of the respondents. Data from 6-year pollen monitoring served to characterize birch and grass pollen seasons. Results: We found insignificant negative associations between the duration of birch pollen season and the prevalence of declared allergic rhinitis and asthma during the season across all age groups. There were insignificant inverse associations between the number of days with above-threshold and high grass pollen concentrations, total grass pollen count and the prevalence of declared allergic rhinitis and asthma during the season across all age groups. Associations noted in the clinical part were also non-significant; however, these trends were not uniform across the age groups. Conclusions: Our findings do not confirm the hypothesis of a positive association between pollen exposure and the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and asthma

    Evaluation of Metal Ion Concentration in Hard Tissues of Teeth in Residents of Central Poland

    Objectives. The aim of the study was an assessment of the content of trace elements in enamel and dentin of teeth extracted in patients residing in urban and agricultural areas of Poland. Methods. The study included 30 generally healthy patients with retained third molars. 65 samples of enamel and dentin from individuals living in urban areas and 85 samples of enamel and dentin from individuals living in agricultural areas were prepared. The content of manganese, lead, cadmium, and chromium in the studied enamel and dentin samples from retained teeth was determined by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. In the process of statistical hypothesis testing, the level of significance was assumed at α=0.05. Results. A comparative analysis of the data showed that enamel and dentin of inhabitants of industrialized areas contain significantly higher amounts of lead and cadmium than hard tissues of teeth in residents of agricultural areas and comparable amounts of manganese and chromium. Significance. It appears that hard tissues of retained teeth may constitute valuable material for assessment of long-term environmental exposure to metal ions. The study confirms that the risk of exposure to heavy metals depends on the place of residence and environmental pollution

    Clinical Findings in Children with Noonan Syndrome—A 17-Year Retrospective Study in an Oral Surgery Center

    To date, only a limited number of publications have studied the specific oral and maxillofacial findings in patients diagnosed with Noonan syndrome (NS), which is an example of a genetically heterogeneous RASopathy. In this retrospective study, we aimed to ascertain the genotype–phenotype correlations between genetic mutations and certain diagnoses in the field of oral surgery. We collected surgical and genetic data from 42 children (median age, 12 years) who had a confirmed diagnosis of NS and underwent surgery in the Department of Oral Surgery, Medical University of Lodz, over a 17-year period, from 2004 to 2021. In total, 17 patients with mutations of the PTPN11 gene were diagnosed with over-retained deciduous teeth and supernumerary teeth. An amount of 7 patients with mutations of the SOS1 gene were diagnosed with mandibular compound odontomas. Finally, 12 patients with mutations of the LZTR1 gene were diagnosed with bilateral or unilateral central giant cell granulomas in the mandible.     Assessment of the Susceptibility of Aesthetic Orthodontic Brackets to Discoloration

    The high aesthetic value of orthodontic appliance elements during treatment constitutes an important factor for an increasing number of adult patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether food dyes could significantly affect the color of both plastic and ceramic orthodontic brackets. Four brands of orthodontic brackets were investigated in the present study. Twenty-five samples of each kind were prepared. Five brackets of each series were stored in pure water, coffee, black tea and red wine for 1 h, 24 h, 7 days and 14 days. Total color change ΔE* of the samples was analyzed after storage with the use of the SpectroShade dental spectrophotometer (MHT, Verona, Italy) according to the CIE L*a*b* color scale. Correlations between bracket brand, kind of food dye and intensity of color change at the significance level p = 0.05 were investigated. After 1 and 24 h of incubation, water had the least influence on the color change of aesthetic orthodontic brackets, and tea had the greatest effect (p = 0.05). After 7 and 14 days of incubation of the samples, water still remained the environment influencing ΔE* change to the smallest extent, whereas storage in red wine changed the color of brackets to the significantly (p = 0.05) highest degree. The degree of discoloration of the assessed brackets depended on the type of material and the storage time in the environment of the individual food dyes (p = 0.05). The results of the present study show that, in the event of contact with food dyes, aesthetic orthodontic brackets discolor, the intensity of which can be influenced by the materials they are made of, the kind of food dye and the time of samples’ storage

    Adhesion between orthodontic bracket and dental ceramics

    The strength of the connection between orthodontic brackets and sandblasted dental ceramics was evaluated. The strength of the bracket-ceramics connection was determined in four time intervals. Based on the obtained results, basic statistics were calculated. For the comparative analysis of average values, the following were used: ANOVA analysis of variance and Tukey’s HSD post-hoc test at the significance level of α = 0.05. The statistical analysis performed did not show any influence of the method of surface treatment (with sanding, without sanding) between orthodontic brackets and ceramics. At the same time, it has been shown that with samples storing time in aqueous environment, the quality of the connection decreases significantly, regardless of the surface treatment method used

    Midrapidity antiproton-to-proton ratio in pp collisons root s=0.9 and 7 TeV measured by the ALICE experiment

    The ratio of the yields of antiprotons to protons in pp collisions has been measured by the ALICE experiment at root s = 0.9 and 7 TeV during the initial running periods of the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement covers the transverse momentum interval 0.45 < p(t) < 1.05 GeV/c and rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5. The ratio is measured to be R-vertical bar y vertical bar<0.5 = 0.957 +/- 0.006(stat) +/- 0.0014(syst) at 0.9 Tev and R-vertical bar y vertical bar<0.5 = 0.991 +/- 0.005 +/- 0.014(syst) at 7 TeV and it is independent of both rapidity and transverse momentum. The results are consistent with the conventional model of baryon-number transport and set stringent limits on any additional contributions to baryon-number transfer over very large rapidity intervals in pp collisions
