Computational simulation of heat transfer from alternate heating sources

The alternant heat transfer induced by particle packet and gas bubbles on an object surface in a gas fluidised bed is computationally studied. The particle packet and bubble are modelled by a DPPM (double particle-layer and Porous Medium) model and a hemispherical model, respectively. Different meshing schemes are applied and different mesh sizes are used in meshing particle packet and heated object and a very large geometrical size difference between them was considered. Two parallel solver processes were proposed to perform the simulation of heat transfer for different purposes and implemented with the Fluent CFD package.<br /

Preparation of cross-linked nanoporous poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate membrane in hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal phases

Cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) membranes were prepared by polymerization in periodic nanostructured lyotropic liquid crystals (LLC) hexagonal phases under UV light. A series of membranes were prepared under different purification treatment conditions. Polarized light microscope was employed to determine the LLC phase texture of LLC system before and after polymerization. It is found that the LLC hexagonal structure retained to some degree after polymerization. The interior structures of final membranes were investigated with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results suggested that purification process affect the structure retention.<br /

The influence of geometry and wall character of pores on the permeation of ions and water through desalination membranes

The transport of water and ions across mimicked nanotube membranes with pseudo atoms is studied using molecular dynamics simulations under equilibrium conditions and hydrostatic pressure. Different pore surface properties are constructed by assigning partial charges on the sites of specified atoms to explore the influence of charges and polarity. The energetics of water and ion transports through the nanopores was calculated to evaluate their filterability to water. The simulation results show that the free energy barriers to water and ion conductions much depend on the charges at the pore entrance and the dipole within the pore. The membranes with hydrophobic pores and negatively charged entrances would be very efficient in the water transport and ion rejection. The charges and dipoles of the pore wall and the aligned dipoles of water molecules in the pore can create a significant force on ions.<br /

Objectives: We investigated the efficacy, side effects, and prognostic factors of concurrent chemoradiotherapy for patientswith stage Ib3-IIa2 cervical cancer.Material and methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinicopathologic data from 73 patients with stageIb3-IIa2 cervical cancer who received concurrent chemoradiotherapy from January 2008 to December 2013 in our hospital.Overall response and disease control rates were used to evaluate short-term outcomes; the 3-year and 5-year disease-freesurvival and overall survival were used to evaluate long-term efficacy. Toxicity reactions and prognostic factors were recorded. Results: With concurrent chemoradiotherapy, overall response and disease control rates were 91.78% and 97.26%, respectively. The 3-year disease-free and overall survival were 80.82% and 83.56%; the 5-year disease-free and overall survival were 75.34%and 79.45%, respectively. All side effects were tolerated and potentially alleviated by symptomatic treatment. Tumor pathologicaltype, differentiated degree, primary tumor size and squamous cell carcinoma antigen levels before and after treatment wereclosely related to survival (univariate analysis; p &lt; 0.05). Pathological type, primary tumor size and squamous cell carcinomaantigen levels one month after treatment were independent prognostic factors for long-term outcome (multivariate analysis). Conclusions: Short- and long-term efficacy of concurrent chemoradiotherapy for stage Ib3-IIa2 cervical cancer is well-determinedand tolerable. Patients with adenocarcinomas, tumor diameter ≥ 5 cm and squamous cell carcinoma antigenlevels ≥ 1.5 ng/mL (one month after treatment) had poor prognosis and should be assessed further

Improved 3D thinning algorithms for skeleton extraction

In this study, we focused on developing a novel 3D Thinning algorithm to extract one-voxel wide skeleton from various 3D objects aiming at preserving the topological information. The 3D Thinning algorithm was testified on computer-generated and real 3D reconstructed image sets acquired from TEMT and compared with other existing 3D Thinning algorithms. It is found that the algorithm has conserved medial axes and simultaneously topologies very well, demonstrating many advantages over the existing technologies. They are versatile, rigorous, efficient and rotation invariant.<br /

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Acute and chronic inflammation play essential roles in inflammatory/autoimmune conditions. Protective anti-inflammatory effects of the n-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were reported in animal models of colitis, sepsis, and stroke. Since dendritic cells (DC) represent the essential cellular link between innate and adaptive immunity and have a prominent role in tolerance for self-antigens, we sought to investigate the impact of DHA on DC maturation and proinflammatory cytokine production.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Murine bone marrow-derived DC were treated with DHA and stimulated with various toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands. Flow cytometry was used to determine the levels of surface maturation markers and endocytic activity. Cytokine expression and secretion were measured by real-time RT-PCR and ELISA assays. PPARγ and NFκB activity in nuclear extracts were determined by binding to specific oligonucleotide sequences using ELISA-based assays. In vivo effects of DHA were assessed in splenic DC from LPS-inoculated mice maintained on a DHA-enriched diet.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>DHA maintained the immature phenotype in bone marrow-derived DC by preventing the upregulation of MHCII and costimulatory molecules (CD40, CD80 and CD86) and maintaining high levels of endocytic activity. DHA inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including the IL-12 cytokine family (IL-12p70, IL-23, and IL-27), from DC stimulated with TLR2, 3, 4, and 9 ligands. DHA inhibition of IL-12 expression was mediated through activation of PPARγ and inhibition of NFκBp65 nuclear translocation. DHA exerted a similar inhibitory effect on IL-12 and IL-23 expression in vivo in LPS-inoculated mice maintained on a DHA-enriched diet.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Exposure of bone marrow-derived DC to DHA resulted in the maintenance of an immature phenotype and drastic reduction in proinflammatory cytokine release. DHA inhibited the expression and secretion of the IL-12 cytokine family members (IL-12p70, IL-23 and IL-27), which play essential roles in the differentiation of the proinflammatory Th1/Th17 effector cells. The effect of DHA on IL-12 expression was mediated through activation of PPARγ and inhibition of NFκB. Inhibition of IL-12 and IL-23 expression was also evident in splenic DC from mice fed a DHA-enriched diet, suggesting that dietary DHA acts as an anti-inflammatory agent in vivo.</p

Characterization of membranes with X-ray ultramicroscopy

Non-invasive characterization and observation of synthetic membranes is an important practice to monitor the performance of membrane process. Primarily there are two techniques&mdash;optical and non-optical for this purpose. Among them, X-ray computed tomography, as a non-optical technique, has been extensively used for the measurement of fibre distribution and air pockets trapped in the modules. However, the micro resolution of most commercial systems has limited its application which can hardly be used for the sub-micro characterization of membrane processes. A novel micro and nano characterization method is introduced in the current work by exploring an innovative development of the X-ray ultramicroscope (XuM) and micro-tomographic techniques. The XuM, based on using a scanning electron microscope as host, provides a new approach to X-ray projection microscopy. It has demonstrated the ability to characterize very small features in objects, down to of order 100 nm, including the use for dry, wet and even liquid samples. It can also distinguish objects with very subtle difference in density.<br /

Prostaglandin E2 Inhibition of IL-27 Production in Murine Dendritic Cells: A Novel Mechanism That Involves IRF1

IL-27, a multifunctional cytokine produced by APCs, antagonizes inflammation by affecting conventional dendritic cells (cDC), inducing IL-10, and promoting development of regulatory Tr1 cells. Although the mechanisms involved in IL-27 induction are well studied, much less is known about the factors that negatively impact IL-27 expression. PGE2, a major immunomodulatory prostanoid, acts as a proinflammatory agent in several models of inflammatory/autoimmune disease, promoting primarily Th17 development and function. In this study, we report on a novel mechanism that promotes the proinflammatory function of PGE2 We showed previously that PGE2 inhibits IL-27 production in murine bone marrow-derived DCs. In this study, we show that, in addition to bone marrow-derived DCs, PGE2 inhibits IL-27 production in macrophages and in splenic cDC, and we identify a novel pathway consisting of signaling through EP2/EP4→induction of cAMP→downregulation of IFN regulatory factor 1 expression and binding to the p28 IFN-stimulated response element site. The inhibitory effect of PGE2 on p28 and irf1 expression does not involve endogenous IFN-β, STAT1, or STAT2, and inhibition of IL-27 does not appear to be mediated through PKA, exchange protein activated by cAMP, PI3K, or MAPKs. We observed similar inhibition of il27p28 expression in vivo in splenic DC following administration of dimethyl PGE2 in conjunction with LPS. Based on the anti-inflammatory role of IL-27 in cDC and through the generation of Tr1 cells, we propose that the PGE2-induced inhibition of IL-27 in activated cDC represents an important additional mechanism for its in vivo proinflammatory functions
