Confirmation and Analysis of Circular Polarization from Sagittarius A*
Recently Bower et al. (1999b) have reported the detection of circular
polarization from the Galactic Center black hole candidate, Sagittarius A*. We
provide an independent confirmation of this detection, and provide some

'It's communication between people who are going through the same thing': experiences of informal interactions in hospital cancer treatment settings
PURPOSE: In hospital settings, patients, visitors, and staff engage in many interactions outside formal clinical encounters. Whilst many of these may be inconsequential, others contribute significantly to how patients and their carers experience cancer and its treatment. This article aims to explore the experiences and significance of interactions that occur outside formal clinical encounters in hospital cancer treatment settings. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with cancer patients, carers, and staff recruited from two hospital sites and cancer support groups. Hermeneutic phenomenology informed lines of questioning and data analysis. RESULTS: Thirty-one people participated in the study: 18 cancer patients, four carers, and nine staff members. The experiences of informal interactions were grouped into three themes: connecting, making sense, and enacting care. The participants described how these encounters allowed connection with others in the hospital spaces, facilitating a sense of belonging, normality, and self-worth. Through these interactions, individuals participated in making sense of their experiences, to better anticipate the decisions and challenges that might lie ahead. By connecting with other individuals, they cared for others and felt cared for themselves, and were able to learn from, teach, and support each other. CONCLUSIONS: Outside the confines of the clinical discourses participants negotiate terms of engagement, sharing of information, expertise, and their own personal stories that they may employ to contribute to the individuals around them. These interactions occur within a loose and evolving framework of social interactions, an 'informal community', in which cancer patients, carers, and staff members play active and meaningful roles
Full-Stokes polarimetry with circularly polarized feeds - Sources with stable linear and circular polarization in the GHz regime
We present a pipeline that allows recovering reliable information for all
four Stokes parameters with high accuracy. Its novelty relies on the treatment
of the instrumental effects already prior to the computation of the Stokes
parameters contrary to conventional methods, such as the M\"uller matrix one.
The instrumental linear polarization is corrected across the whole telescope
beam and significant Stokes and can be recovered even when the recorded
signals are severely corrupted. The accuracy we reach in terms of polarization
degree is of the order of 0.1-0.2 %. The polarization angles are determined
with an accuracy of almost 1. The presented methodology was applied
to recover the linear and circular polarization of around 150 Active Galactic
Nuclei. The sources were monitored from July 2010 to April 2016 with the
Effelsberg 100-m telescope at 4.85 GHz and 8.35 GHz with a cadence of around
1.2 months. The polarized emission of the Moon was used to calibrate the
polarization angle. Our analysis showed a small system-induced rotation of
about 1 at both observing frequencies. Finally, we identify five
sources with significant and stable linear polarization; three sources remain
constantly linearly unpolarized over the period we examined; a total of 11
sources have stable circular polarization degree and four of
them with non-zero . We also identify eight sources that maintain
a stable polarization angle over the examined period. All this is provided to
the community for polarization observations reference. We finally show that our
analysis method is conceptually different from the traditionally used ones and
performs better than the M\"uller matrix method. Although it was developed for
a system equipped with circularly polarized feeds it can easily be modified for

Circular Polarization Induced by Scintillation in a Magnetized Medium
A new theory is presented for the development of circular polarization as
radio waves propagate through the turbulent, birefringent interstellar medium.
The fourth order moments of the wavefield are calculated and it is shown that
unpolarized incident radiation develops a nonzero variance in circular
polarization. A magnetized turbulent medium causes the Stokes parameters to
scintillate in a non-identical manner. A specific model for this effect is

A transient component in the pulse profile of PSR J0738-4042
One of the tenets of the radio pulsar observational picture is that the
integrated pulse profiles are constant with time. This assumption underpins
much of the fantastic science made possible via pulsar timing. Over the past
few years, however, this assumption has come under question with a number of
pulsars showing pulse shape changes on a range of timescales. Here, we show the
dramatic appearance of a bright component in the pulse profile of PSR
J0738-4042 (B0736-40). The component arises on the leading edge of the profile.
It was not present in 2004 but strongly present in 2006 and all observations
thereafter. A subsequent search through the literature shows the additional
component varies in flux density over timescales of decades. We show that the
polarization properties of the transient component are consistent with the
picture of competing orthogonal polarization modes. Faced with the general
problem of identifying and characterising average profile changes, we outline
and apply a statistical technique based on a Hidden Markov Model. The value of
this technique is established through simulations, and is shown to work
successfully in the case of low signal-to-noise profiles.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Multi-frequency measurements of the NVSS foreground sources in the Cosmic Background Imager fields. I. Data release
We present the results of the flux density measurements at 4.85 GHz and 10.45
GHz of a sample of 5998 NVSS radio sources with the Effelsberg 100 m telescope.
The initial motivation was the need to identify the NVSS radio sources that
could potentially contribute significant contaminating flux in the frequency
range at which the Cosmic Background Imager experiment operated. An efficient
way to achieve this challenging goal has been to compute the high frequency
flux density of those sources by extrapolating their radio spectrum. This is
determined by the three-point spectral index measured on the basis of the NVSS
entry at 1.4 GHz and the measurements at 4.85 GHz and 10.45 GHz carried out
with the 100 m Effelsberg telescope. These measurements are important since the
targeted sample probes the weak part of the flux density distribution, hence
the decision to make the data available. We present the table with flux density
measurements of 3434 sources that showed no confusion allowing reliable
measurements, their detection rates, their spectral index distribution and an

A high-resolution radio survey of the Vela supernova remnant
This paper presents a high-resolution radio continuum (843 MHz) survey of the
Vela supernova remnant. The contrast between the structures in the central
pulsar-powered nebula of the remnant and the synchrotron radiation shell allows
the remnant to be identified morphologically as a member of the composite
class. The data are the first of a composite remnant at spatial scales
comparable with those available for the Cygnus Loop and the Crab Nebula, and
make possible a comparison of radio, optical and soft X-ray emission from the
resolved shell filaments. The survey, made with the Molonglo Observatory
Synthesis Telescope, covers an area of 50 square degrees at a resolution of

"They all work...when you stick to them" : a qualitative investigation of dieting, weight loss, and physical exercise, in obese individuals
BackgroundTo explore the extent to which people living with obesity have attempted to lose weight, their attitudes towards dieting, physical exercise and weight loss solutions, why their weight loss attempts have failed, and their opinions about what would be most beneficial to them in their struggle with their weight.MethodQualitative study, using open-ended interviews, of 76 people living with obesity in Victoria, Australia in 2006/7. Individuals with a BMI of 30 or over were recruited using articles in local newspapers, convenience sampling, and at a later stage purposive sampling techniques to diversify the sample. Data analysis was conducted by hand using a constant, comparative method to develop and test analytical categories. Data were interpreted both within team meetings and through providing research participants the chance to comment on the study findings.ResultsWhilst participants repeatedly turned to commercial diets in their weight loss attempts, few had used, or were motivated to participate in physical activity. Friends or family members had introduced most individuals to weight loss techniques. Those who took part in interventions with members of their social network were more likely to report feeling accepted and supported. Participants blamed themselves for being unable to maintain their weight loss or \u27stick\u27 to diets. Whilst diets did not result in sustained weight loss, two thirds of participants felt that dieting was an effective way to lose weight.ConclusionIndividuals with obesity receive numerous instructions about what to do to address their weight, but very few are given appropriate long term guidance or support with which to follow through those instructions. Understanding the positive role of social networks may be particularly important in engaging individuals in physical activity. Public health approaches to obesity must engage and consult with those currently living with obesity, if patterns of social change are to occur
