Invertible Conditional GAN Revisited: Photo-to-Manga Face Translation with Modern Architectures (Student Abstract)

    No full text
Recent style translation methods have extended their transferability from texture to geometry. However, performing translation while preserving image content when there is a significant style difference is still an open problem. To overcome this problem, we propose Invertible Conditional Fast GAN (IcFGAN) based on GAN inversion and cFGAN. It allows for unpaired photo-to-manga face translation. Experimental results show that our method could translate styles under significant style gaps, while the state-of-the-art methods could hardly preserve image content

Thymic carcinoma with myasthenia gravis: Two case reports

Introduction: Myasthenia gravis (MG) has been reported to correlate with earlier-stage thymoma, and theoretically does not accompany thymic carcinoma. However, we encountered two cases of thymic carcinoma with MG. Presentation of cases: Case 1 involved a 54-year-old man who had been diagnosed with MG based on symptoms and detection of anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody (ARAB). Computed tomography (CT) revealed an anterior mediastinal tumor 30 mm in diameter. Prednisolone (PSL) and tacrolimus were administered without surgery at that time. Six years after diagnosis of MG, he was admitted to our hospital and underwent extended thymectomy. Pathological examination revealed type B2-B3 thymoma according to World Health Organization criteria, comprising 80% of the tumor with small cell carcinoma as 20%. Case 2 involved a 51-year-old woman. She had been diagnosed with MG based on eyelid ptosis and detection of ARAB. Ten years after diagnosis of MG, diaphragm elevation was detected on chest X-ray. CT revealed an anterior mediastinal tumor, 47 mm in diameter. We suspected tumor invasion to the right phrenic nerve, right atrium, and superior vena cava. We therefore performed extended thymectomy after preoperative radiotherapy (40 Gy). Pathological examination revealed squamous cell carcinoma. Discussion: Most cases of thymic carcinomas appear to arise de novo, but appearance in thymomas has been described. In both our cases, MG was treated with pharmacotherapy alone without extended thymectomy, and thymic carcinoma was considered to have developed from the thymoma during long-term follow-up. Conclusion: Thymic carcinoma can accompany MG

    High-Power GaN-Based Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers with AlInN/GaN Distributed Bragg Reflectors

High-efficiency and high-power operation have been demonstrated for blue GaN-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with AlInN/GaN distributed Bragg reflectors. The high-efficiency performance was achieved by introducing a novel SiO2-buried lateral index guide and adjusting the front mirror reflectivity. Lateral optical confinement has been shown to greatly lower the otherwise significant loss of transverse radiation exhibited by typical VCSELs based on GaN. Employing a long (10λ) cavity can also enhance the output power, by lowering the thermal resistance of the VCSEL and increasing the operating current associated with thermal rollover. This modification, in conjunction with optimized front mirror reflectivity and a buried SiO2 lateral index guide, results in a blue VCSEL (in the continuous wave mode with an 8 μm aperture at 20 °C) having a superior differential quantum efficiency value of 31% and an enhanced 15.7 mW output power. This unit also exhibits a relatively high output power of 2.7 mW at temperatures as high as 110 °C. Finally, a 5.5 μm aperture VCSEL was found to generate a narrow divergence (5.1°) single-lobe far field pattern when operating at an output power of approximately 5 mW

Determination of N-15/N-14 of Ammonium, Nitrite, Nitrate, Hydroxylamine, and Hydrazine Using Colorimetric Reagents and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS)

In the nitrogen (N) cycle, nitrogenous compounds are chemically and biologically converted to various aqueous and gaseous N species. The N-15-labeling approach is a powerful culture-dependent technique to obtain insights into the complex nitrogen transformation reactions that occur in cultures. In the N-15-labeling approach, the fates of supplemented N-15- and/or unlabeled gaseous and aqueous compounds are tracked by mass spectrometry (MS) analysis, whereas MS analysis of aqueous N species requires laborious sample preparation steps and is performed using isotope-ratio mass spectrometry, which requires an expensive mass spectrometer. We developed a simple and high-throughput MS method for determining the N-15 atoms percent of NH4+, NO2-, NO3-, NH2OH, and N2H4, where liquid samples (1,000 liquid samples daily at 1,000 liquid samples daily at <$1 (U.S.) per 384 samples for routine analysis

Current situation of anaphylaxis in Japan: Data from the anaphylaxis registry of training and teaching facilities certified by the Japanese Society of Allergology – secondary publication

Background: Anaphylaxis is a potentially fatal severe systemic hypersensitivity reaction that causes symptoms in multiple organs such as the skin, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract; however, no nationwide epidemiological survey on anaphylaxis has been conducted in Japan. This survey aimed to elucidate the triggers and treatment of anaphylaxis in Japan. Methods: Between February 2015 and October 2017, we prospectively collected clinical data on the triggers and treatment of patients who developed anaphylaxis or were admitted to the emergency room with anaphylaxis in the training and teaching facilities of the Japanese Society of Allergology. Results: This study included 79 of the 451 affiliated facilities (18%), and a total of 767 patients were enrolled; 73% of them were aged <18 years and 7% had in-hospital triggers. The most common triggers were food (68%), drugs (12%), food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (5%), insects (4%), and oral immunotherapy (3%), with drugs being the most common in-hospital trigger and food being the most common out-of-hospital trigger. Intramuscular injection of adrenaline was administered therapeutically to 38% of the patients, with 10% requiring multiple doses. Adrenaline auto-injectors were used in 12% of out-of-hospital patients. Conclusions: The present survey revealed the most common triggers and treatments for anaphylaxis in Japan. Self-management and adrenaline administration as first-line treatment may not be done sufficiently. Therefore, it is necessary to thoroughly educate and train patients and physicians about anaphylaxis

Thrombosis of the Superior Mesenteric and Portal Veins after Splenectomy and/or Distal Splenorenal Shunts

During the past ten years, 180 patients with liver cirrhosis and hematologic disorders underwent splenectomy and distal splenorenal shunts, 56 of whom were evaluated by CT, ultrasonography (US) and/or angiography, postoperatively at Hiroshima University Hospital and Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital. Five patients were asymptomatic; thrombosis was observed in 10; and two died of liver failure. Three patients each complained of postprandial epigastralgia with diarrhea, fever, and general malaise. Angiography was performed to evaluate the patency of the shuts; CT and US, to follow up the liver cirrhosis - not the portal vein thrombosis. Since thrombosis of the portal venous system occurs frequently during surgery, and since it causes marked changes in portal vein hemodynamics, the portal and superior mesenteric veins must be observed by US and CT for the early postoperative detection and treatment, to avoid major surgery
