Modification of established rejection of canine kidney and liver homografts with antilymphocyte gamma-G globulin

Heterologous ALG was administered to ten canine recipients of renal homografts and one recipient of an orthotopic liver. Treatment was started after rejection was well established. Death from homograft failure was thereby significantly delayed and in several experiments the rejection was at least partially reversed. © 1969

Education for Human Rights: Which Way Forward?

    Get PDF
A workshop paper on human rights education in Southern Africa, originally presented at SARIPS Workshop on Education for Human Rights in Southern Africa.Anno 1994, the world we live in seems more and more contradictory and incomprehensible. On the one hand, instruments containing provisions for the protection and promotion of universal human rights and fundamental freedoms are recognized by almost all governments; on the other hand, the same human rights and fundamental freedoms are violated to a high degree either by governments, groups of people or individual human beings. On the one hand, people and individuals strive for a more peaceful, equal and democratic world; on the other hand, their fellows prefer the use of weapons and the method of war. The current international tensions and conflicts raging over all continents, the continuing inequalities, the mass and gross violations of human rights, and the growing economic, political, cultural and social relations and interdependence, demonstrate a compelling need for international understanding, peace, human rights and fundamental freedoms.SARIP

Comparative Characterization Study of a LaBr3(Ce) Scintillation Crystal in Two Surface Wrapping Scenarios: Absorptive and Reflective

    Get PDF
The properties of a 50 mm x 50 mm x 30 mm monolithic LaBr3:Ce scintillator crystal coupled to a position-sensitive multi-anode photomultiplier (PMT, Hamamatsu H9500),representing the absorbing detector of a Compton camera under study for online ion (proton) beam range verification in hadron therapy, was evaluated in combination with either absorptive or reflective crystal surface coating. This study covered an assessment of the energy and position-dependent energy resolution, exhibiting a factor of 2.5-3.5 improvement for the reflectively wrapped crystal at 662 keV. The spatial dependency was investigated using a collimated Cs-137 source, showing a steep degradation of the energy resolution at the edges and corners of the absorptively wrapped crystal. Furthermore, the time resolution was determined to be 273 ps (FWHM) and 536 ps (FWHM) with reflective and absorptive coating, respectively, using a Co-60 source. In contrast, the light spread function (LSF) of the light amplitude distribution on the PMT segments improved for the absorptively wrapped detector. Both wrapping modalities showed almost no differences in the energy-dependent photopeak detection efficiency

Bevolkingsrietcultuur in Nederlandsch-Indie : een landbouweconomische studie

The origin and history of sugar-cane in the Dutch East Indies were described and consecutive phases of development of Indonesian agriculture were suggested. Cultivation and processing of native sugar-cane in the 1920's and some data on trade in sugar lumps were examined. The importance of native sugar-cane as a cash crop was stressed and needed encouragement rather than discouragement. There was some conflict between the native sugar industry in its infancy, still modest in size and technique, and the economically powerful Dutch sugar concerns with their elaborate plantations and factories. In close agreement with the Western sugar interests the Government policy favoured the status quo, both thwarting the extension of native enterprise and preventing any form of co-operation. The thesis condemned this policy and saw the common interest as the only safe solution in the future. A gradual transition was needed to a system where the local cane-growers could supply the large factories with cane for refining.</p
