Character morality, enjoyment, and appreciation: A replication of Eden, Daalmans, and Johnson (2017)
Much research on media entertainment seeks to explain why viewers enjoy and appreciate a variety of media content. Affective disposition theory suggests that media enjoyment results from perceptions of the morality of characters and viewers’ expectations for characters’ narrative outcomes. However, research has struggled to explain how characters with varying morality (i.e., not perfectly good or bad) entertain viewers. This study replicates a previous study conducted by Eden, Daalmans, and Johnson (2017) that investigated different types of morally ambiguous characters, using a typology of character types based on an online, collaboratively sourced typology.
Like the original study, this study found that character types varied in morality across moral domains, and that MACs were not more associated with variables related to self. However, unlike the original study, the present study found that morality was not significantly related to enjoyment or appreciation. Rather, according to the replicated analyses, value homophily was found to be significantly related to enjoyment, and both value homophily and self-expansion were significantly related to appreciation. Additionally, after collapsing the self-expansion, wishful identification, value homophily, and IOS variables into a single aggregate variable, the new combined variable was significantly related to both enjoyment and appreciation. 1953年以降、日本では台風を発生順に通し番号を付けて呼んでいるが、アメリカ合衆国ではhurricaneを個人名で呼ぶ慣行が定着している。米国では1953年にハリケーンの名称に女性の個人名の採用が正式に決まったが、1979年には女性名だけでなく、男性名の採用も決まり、1979年以降はアルファベット順に男性と女性の個人名が交互に使用されている。この現象は米国の人権意識の高さを表すだけではない。兄弟姉妹、両親、上司にも個人名を用いる習慣が反映しており、行為者を重視する表現を好むという英語表現の伝統的な傾向とも深く結びついている。台風の呼び名には、「お兄[姉]さん」「お父[母]さん」「部[課]長」という立場や役職上の名前を敬称として用いる日本語の習慣が関連している。英語と日本語によって熱帯性低気圧の命名法が異なるという現象の根源に、「人を中心に考える」英語文化と「人と人の関係」、つまり、「状況を中心に考える」日本語文化という相違が内在している。After 1953, serial numbers began to be used as a way of identifying the order of typhoon outbreaks in Japan, whereas personal names have been used for hurricanes in the United States of America. In 1953, women\u27s personal names were adopted in naming hurricanes in the U.S.A., and in 1979, men\u27s names were also adopted. Men and women\u27s personal names have been used in turn in alphabetical order. This phenomenon expresses not only the height of American human rights consciousness, but it also reflects their custom of using personal names for addressing their brothers, sisters, parents, or even their bosses. This is related to a traditional use of English expressions that attach great importance to the person doing an action. The system of naming typhoons in Japan reflects the Japanese linguistic characteristic to use a person\u27s job or status title, such as "an older brother [sister]" "father [mother]" "a department [section] chief" as an honorific title instead of a personal name. The difference of naming hurricanes in English and typhoons in Japanese is a reflection of differences in American and Japanese cultures. In Japanese culture, the relationship between two or more people is of greater importance, i.e., Japanese culture is status-centered, whereas in western cultures, the person is viewed as being central, i.e., American culture is human-centered, therefore agent-centered
Summary Report Topical Group on Application and Industry Community Engagement Frontier Snowmass 2021
HEP community leads and operates cutting-edge experiments for the DOE Office
of Science which have challenging sensing, data processing, and computing
requirements that far surpass typical industrial applications. To make
necessary progress in the energy, material, and fundamental sciences,
development of novel technologies is often required to enable these advanced
detector and accelerator programs. Our capabilities include efficient
co-design, which is a prerequisite to enable the deployment of advanced
techniques in a scientific setting where development spans from rapid
prototyping to robust and reliable production scale. This applies across the
design spectrum from the low level fabrication techniques to the high level
software development. It underpins the requirement for a holistic approach of
innovation that accelerates the cycle of technology development and deployment.
The challenges set by the next generation of experiments requires a
collaborative approach between academia, industry and national labs. Just a
single stakeholder will be unable to deliver the technologies required for the
success of the scientific goals. Tools and techniques developed for High Energy
Physics (HEP) research can accelerate scientific discovery more broadly across
DOE Office of Science and other federal initiatives and also benefit industry
applications
