SRC seal testing
Small venthole drilled in semisealed silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) cavity eliminates entrapped helium. Although these devices show slightly greater leak than those before lead installation, it is now possible to distinguish device with good hermetic seal from defective one
Automated operation of a home made torque magnetometer using LabVIEW
In order to simplify and optimize the operation of our home made torque
magnetometer we created a new software system. The architecture is based on
parallel, independently running instrument handlers communicating with a main
control program. All programs are designed as command driven state machines
which greatly simplifies their maintenance and expansion. Moreover, as the main
program may receive commands not only from the user interface, but also from
other parallel running programs, an easy way of automation is achieved. A
program working through a text file containing a sequence of commands and
sending them to the main program suffices to automatically have the system
conduct a complex set of measurements. In this paper we describe the system's
architecture and its implementation in LabVIEW.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Rev. Sci. Inst
Entanglement verification with finite data
Suppose an experimentalist wishes to verify that his apparatus produces
entangled quantum states. A finite amount of data cannot conclusively
demonstrate entanglement, so drawing conclusions from real-world data requires
statistical reasoning. We propose a reliable method to quantify the weight of
evidence for (or against) entanglement, based on a likelihood ratio test. Our
method is universal in that it can be applied to any sort of measurements. We
demonstrate the method by applying it to two simulated experiments on two
qubits. The first measures a single entanglement witness, while the second
performs a tomographically complete measurement.Comment: 4 pages, 3 pretty picture
SEI rover solar-electrochemical power system options
A trade study of power system technology for proposed lunar vehicles and servicers is presented. A variety of solar-based power systems were selected and analyzed for each. The analysis determined the power system mass, volume, and deployed area. A comparison was made between periodic refueling/recharging systems and onboard power systems to determine the most practical system. The trade study concluded that the power system significantly impacts the physical characteristics of the vehicle. The refueling/recharging systems were lighter and more compact, but dependent on availability of established lunar base infrastructure. Onboard power systems pay a mass penalty for being fully developed systems
Quantum Darwinism in quantum Brownian motion: the vacuum as a witness
We study quantum Darwinism -- the redundant recording of information about a
decohering system by its environment -- in zero-temperature quantum Brownian
motion. An initially nonlocal quantum state leaves a record whose redundancy
increases rapidly with its spatial extent. Significant delocalization (e.g., a
Schroedinger's Cat state) causes high redundancy: many observers can measure
the system's position without perturbing it. This explains the objective (i.e.
classical) existence of einselected, decoherence-resistant pointer states of
macroscopic objects.Comment: 5 page
Shock-darkening in ordinary chondrites : Determination of the pressure-temperature conditions by shock physics mesoscale modeling
We determined the shock-darkening pressure range in ordinary chondrites using the iSALE shock physics code. We simulated planar shock waves on a mesoscale in a sample layer at different nominal pressures. Iron and troilite grains were resolved in a porous olivine matrix in the sample layer. We used equations of state (Tillotson EoS and ANEOS) and basic strength and thermal properties to describe the material phases. We used Lagrangian tracers to record the peak shock pressures in each material unit. The post-shock temperatures (and the fractions of the tracers experiencing temperatures above the melting point) for each material were estimated after the passage of the shock wave and after the reflections of the shock at grain boundaries in the heterogeneous materials. The results showed that shock-darkening, associated with troilite melt and the onset of olivine melt, happened between 40 and 50GPa with 52GPa being the pressure at which all tracers in the troilite material reach the melting point. We demonstrate the difficulties of shock heating in iron and also the importance of porosity. Material impedances, grain shapes, and the porosity models available in the iSALE code are discussed. We also discuss possible not-shock-related triggers for iron melt.Peer reviewe
Practical learning method for multi-scale entangled states
We describe a method for reconstructing multi-scale entangled states from a
small number of efficiently-implementable measurements and fast
post-processing. The method only requires single particle measurements and the
total number of measurements is polynomial in the number of particles. Data
post-processing for state reconstruction uses standard tools, namely matrix
diagonalisation and conjugate gradient method, and scales polynomially with the
number of particles. Our method prevents the build-up of errors from both
numerical and experimental imperfections
