    Who Bears the Burden of Social Insurance?

    Using the society-managed health insurance data, which is cross-sectional time-series and covers 1,670 health insurance societies for seven years (FY1995-2001), we found for the first time in Japan that the majority of the employer's contribution to health insurance is shifting back onto the employees in the form of wage reduction. On the other hand, we cannot find such evidence for the contribution to long-term care insurance using a two-year (FY2000-01) panel data set.

    We present the explicit expressions for the matrix product operator (MPO) representation for the local conserved quantities of the Heisenberg chain. The bond dimension of the MPO grows linearly with the locality of the charges. The MPO has more simple form than the local charges themselves, and their Catalan tree patterns naturally emerge from the matrix products. The MPO representation of local conserved quantities is generalized to the integrable SU(N)\mathrm{SU}(N) invariant spin chain.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure

    The rise and fall of rabies in Japan: A quantitative history of rabies epidemics in Osaka Prefecture, 1914-1933

    Japan has been free from rabies since the 1950s. However, during the early 1900s several large-scale epidemics spread throughout the country. Here we investigate the dynamics of these epidemics between 1914 and 1933 in Osaka Prefecture, using archival data including newspapers. The association between dog rabies cases and human population density was investigated using Mixed-effects models and epidemiological parameters such as the basic reproduction number (R0), the incubation and infectious period and the serial interval were estimated. A total of 4,632 animal rabies cases were reported, mainly in dogs (99.0%, 4,584 cases) during two epidemics from 1914 to 1921, and 1922 to 1933 respectively. The second epidemic was larger (3,705 cases) than the first (879 cases), but had a lower R0 (1.50 versus 2.42). The first epidemic was controlled through capture of stray dogs and tethering of pet dogs. Dog mass vaccination began in 1923, with campaigns to capture stray dogs. Rabies in Osaka Prefecture was finally eliminated in 1933. A total of 3,805 rabid dog-bite injuries, and 75 human deaths were reported. The relatively low incidence of human rabies, high ratio of post-exposure vaccines (PEP) and bite injuries by rabid dogs (minimum 6.2 to maximum 73.6, between 1924 and 1928), and a decline in the proportion of bite victims that developed hydrophobia over time (slope = -0.29, se = 3, p < 0.001), indicated that increased awareness and use of PEP might have prevented disease. Although significantly more dog rabies cases were detected at higher human population densities (slope = 0.66, se = 0.03, p < 0.01), there were fewer dog rabies cases detected per capita (slope = -0.34, se = 0.03, p < 0.01). We suggest that the combination of mass vaccination and restriction of dog movement enabled by strong legislation was key to eliminate rabies. Moreover, the prominent role of the media in both reporting rabies cases and efforts to control the disease likely contributed to promoting the successful participation required to achieve rabies elimination

    Better Practical Algorithms for rSPR Distance and Hybridization Number

    The problem of computing the rSPR distance of two phylogenetic trees (denoted by RDC) is NP-hard and so is the problem of computing the hybridization number of two phylogenetic trees (denoted by HNC). Since they are important problems in phylogenetics, they have been studied extensively in the literature. Indeed, quite a number of exact or approximation algorithms have been designed and implemented for them. In this paper, we design and implement one exact algorithm for HNC and several approximation algorithms for RDC and HNC. Our experimental results show that the resulting exact program is much faster (namely, more than 80 times faster for the easiest dataset used in the experiments) than the previous best and its superiority in speed becomes even more significant for more difficult instances. Moreover, the resulting approximation programs output much better results than the previous bests; indeed, the outputs are always nearly optimal and often optimal. Of particular interest is the usage of the Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS) method in the design of our approximation algorithms. Our experimental results show that with MCTS, we can often solve HNC exactly within short time

    High Catalytic Activity of Heteropolynuclear Cyanide Complexes Containing Cobalt and Platinum Ions: Visible-Light Driven Water Oxidation

    A near-stoichiometric amount of O_2 was evolved as observed in the visible-light irradiation of an aqueous buffer (pH 8) containing [Ru^(II)(2,2′-bipyridine)_3] as a photosensitizer, Na_2S_2O_8 as a sacrificial electron acceptor, and a heteropolynuclear cyanide complex as a water-oxidation catalyst. The heteropolynuclear cyanide complexes exhibited higher catalytic activity than a polynuclear cyanide complex containing only Co^(III) or Pt^(IV) ions as C-bound metal ions. The origin of the synergistic effect between Co and Pt ions is discussed in relation to electronic and local atomic structures of the complexes
