Evaluation of the utility of sediment data in NASQAN (National Stream Quality Accounting Network)
Monthly suspended sediment discharge measurements, made by the USGS as part of the National Stream Quality Accounting Network (NASQAN), are analysed to assess the adequacy in terms of spatial coverage, temporal sampling frequency, accuracy of measurements, as well as in determining the sediment yield in the nation's rivers.
It is concluded that the spatial distribution of NASQAN stations is reasonable but necessarily judgemental. The temporal variations of sediment data contain much higher frequencies than monthly. Sampling error is found to be minor when compared with other causes of data scatter which can be substantial. The usefulness of the monthly measurements of sediment transport is enhanced when combined with the daily measurements of water discharge. Increasing the sampling frequency moderately would not materially improve the accuracy of sediment yield determinations
Self-reported domain-specific and accelerometer-based physical activity and sedentary behaviour in relation to psychological distress among an urban Asian population
Background: The interpretation of previous studies on the association of physical activity and sedentary behaviour with psychological health is limited by the use of mostly self-reported physical activity and sedentary behaviour, and a focus on Western populations. We aimed to explore the association of self-reported and devise-based measures of physical activity and sedentary behaviour domains on psychological distress in an urban multi-ethnic Asian population.
Methods: From a population-based cross-sectional study of adults aged 18-79 years, data were used from an overall sample (n = 2653) with complete self-reported total physical activity/sedentary behaviour and domain-specific physical activity data, and a subsample (n = 703) with self-reported domain-specific sedentary behaviour and accelerometry data. Physical activity and sedentary behaviour data were collected using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), a domain-specific sedentary behaviour questionnaire and accelerometers. The Kessler Screening Scale (K6) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) were used to assess psychological distress. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals, adjusted for socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics.
Results: The sample comprised 45.0% men (median age = 45.0 years). The prevalence of psychological distress based on the K6 and GHQ-12 was 8.4% and 21.7%, respectively. In the adjusted model, higher levels of self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were associated with significantly higher odds for K6 (OR = 1.47 [1.03-2.10]; p-trend = 0.03) but not GHQ-12 (OR = 0.97 [0.77-1.23]; p-trend = 0.79), when comparing the highest with the lowest tertile. Accelerometry-assessed MVPA was not significantly associated with K6 (p-trend = 0.50) nor GHQ-12 (p-trend = 0.74). The highest tertile of leisure-time physical activity, but not work- or transport-domain activity, was associated with less psychological distress using K6 (OR = 0.65 [0.43-0.97]; p-trend = 0.02) and GHQ-12 (OR = 0.72 [0.55-0.93]; p-trend = 0.01). Self-reported sedentary behaviour was not associated with K6 (p-trend = 0.90) and GHQ-12 (p-trend = 0.33). The highest tertile of accelerometry-assessed sedentary behaviour was associated with significantly higher odds for K6 (OR = 1.93 [1.00-3.75]; p-trend = 0.04), but not GHQ-12 (OR = 1.34 [0.86-2.08]; p-trend = 0.18).
Conclusions: Higher levels of leisure-time physical activity and lower levels of accelerometer-based sedentary behaviour were associated with lower psychological distress. This study underscores the importance of assessing accelerometer-based and domain-specific activity in relation to mental health, instead of solely focusing on total volume of activity

Copyright @ 2010 Elsevier B.V.A carbonaceous (heterotrophic) activated sludge process (ASP), nitrifying ASP and a nitrifying/denitrifying ASP have been studied to examine the role of process type in steroid estrogen removal. Biodegradation efficiencies for total steroid estrogens (ÎŁEST) of 80 and 91% were recorded for the nitrifying/denitrifying ASP and nitrifying ASP respectively. Total estrogen biodegradation (ÎŁEST) was only 51% at the carbonaceous ASP, however, the extent of biodegradation in the absence of nitrification clearly indicates the important role of heterotrophs in steroid estrogen removal. The low removal efficiency did not correlate with biomass activity for which the ASPcarbonaceous recorded 80 ÎŒg kgâ1 biomass dâ1 compared to 61 and 15 ÎŒg kgâ1 biomass dâ1 at the ASPnitrifying and ASPnitrifying/denitrifying respectively. This finding was explained by a moderate correlation (r2 = 0.55) between total estrogen loading (ÎŁEST mg mâ3 dâ1) and biomass activity (ÎŒg ÎŁEST degraded kgâ1 dâ1) and has established the impact of loading on steroid estrogen removal at full-scale. At higher solids retention time (SRT), steroid estrogen biodegradation of >80% was observed, as has previously been reported. It is postulated that hydraulic retention time (HRT) is as important as SRT as this governs both reaction time and loading. This observation is based on the high specific estrogen activity determined at the ASPcarbonaceous plant, the significance of estrogen loading and the positive linear correlation between SRT and HRT.Public Utilities Board of Singapore, Anglian Water Ltd., Severn Trent Water Ltd., Thames Water Utilities Ltd., United Utilities Plc., and Yorkshire Water Services Ltd

Fermi surface and quasiparticle dynamics of Na(x)CoO2 {x=0.7} investigated by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of Na0.7CoO2, the host
cobaltate of the NaxCoO2.yH2O series. Our results show a large hexagonal-like
hole-type Fermi surface, an extremely narrow strongly renormalized
quasiparticle band and a small Fermi velocity. Along the Gamma to M high
symmetry line, the quasiparticle band crosses the Fermi level from M toward
Gamma consistent with a negative sign of effective single-particle hopping (t
): t is estimated to be about 8 meV which is on the order of exchange coupling
J in this system. This suggests that t ~ J ~ 10 meV is an important energy
scale in the system. Quasiparticles are well defined only in the T-linear
resistivity regime. Small single particle hopping and unconventional
quasiparticle dynamics may have implications for understanding the unusual
behavior of this new class of compounds.Comment: Revised text, Added Figs, Submitted to PR
The relationship between delta-forced vital capacity (percent fall in forced vital capacity at the PC20 dose of methacholine) and the maximal airway response in patients who have mild asthma
Airway hypersensitivity is routinely evaluated by measuring the concentration (PC20) of inhaled methacholine or histamine that causes a 20% fall in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1). It has been suggested that a percentage fall in forced vital capacity (FVC) measured at the PC20 dose of inhaled agonist (deltaFVC) is a potentially useful clinical measure in patients who have asthma because it provides indirect information about gas trapping and therefore the maximal airway response. The relationships between serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels and the maximal airway response or deltaFVC are largely unknown. The aims of this study were to determine whether deltaFVC is correlated with the degree of maximal airway response and to examine the relationships between serum ECP and deltaFVC or maximal airway response in patients who have mild asthma. Fifty-eight patients with mild asthma underwent high-dose methacholine challenge testing. The PC20, maximal airway response, and deltaFVC were measured on the methacholine dose-response curves. Serum ECP levels also were determined. Subjects without a maximal response plateau (n = 33) had a significantly higher level of deltaFVC (17.9 +/- 4.1%) than subjects with a plateau (n = 25; 14.9 +/- 4.8%). A significant correlation was found between deltaFVC and the level of maximal response plateau (r = 0.446; p = 0.026). Not only methacholine PC20 but also maximal airway response or deltaFVC had no relationships with serum ECP levels. Our results suggest that deltaFVC can be used as a surrogate marker of maximal airway response in patients who have mild asthma and that neither maximal airway response nor deltaFVC reflects blood eosinophil activation any more than methacholine PC20
Influence of operating parameters on the biodegradation of steroid estrogens and nonylphenolic compounds during biological wastewater treatment processes

To access the final edited and published work see http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es901612v.This study investigated operational factors influencing the removal of steroid estrogens and nonylphenolic compounds in two sewage treatment works, one a nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge plant and the other a nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge plant with phosphorus removal. Removal efficiencies of >90% for steroid estrogens and for longer chain nonylphenol ethoxylates (NP4â12EO) were observed at both works, which had equal sludge ages of 13 days. However, the biological activity in terms of milligrams of estrogen removed per day per tonne of biomass was found to be 50â60% more efficient in the nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge works compared to the works which additionally incorporated phosphorus removal. A temperature reduction of 6 °C had no impact on the removal of free estrogens, but removal of the conjugated estrone-3-sulfate was reduced by 20%. The apparent biomass sorption (LogKp) values were greater in the nitrifying/denitrifying works than those in the nitrifying/denitrifying works with phosphorus removal for both steroid estrogens and nonylphenolic compounds possibly indicating a different cell surface structure and therefore microbial population. The difference in biological activity (mg tonneâ1 dâ1) identified in this study, of up to seven times, suggests that there is the potential for enhancing the removal of estrogens and nonylphenols if more detailed knowledge of the factors responsible for these differences can be identified and maximized, thus potentially improving the quality of receiving waters.Public Utilities Board (Singapore), Anglian Water Ltd, Severn Trent Water Ltd, Thames Water Utilities Ltd, United Utilities 393 Plc and Yorkshire Water Services
