Compression of ultrashort UV pulses in a self-defocusing gas
Compression of UV femtosecond laser pulses focused into a gas cell filled
with xenon is reported numerically. With a large negative Kerr index and normal
dispersion, xenon promotes temporal modulational instability (MI) which can be
monitored to shorten ~ 100 fs pulses to robust, singly-peaked waveforms
exhibiting a fourfold compression factor. Combining standard MI theory with a
variational approach allows us to predict the beam parameters suitable for
efficient compression. At powers < 30 MW, nonlinear dispersion is shown to
shift the pulse temporal profile to the rear zone.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Molecular production in two-component atomic Fermi gases
We provide a practical approach to the molecular production via linear
downward sweeps of Feshbach resonances in degenerate Fermi gases containing
incoherent mixtures of two atomic spin states. We show that the efficiency of
the association of atoms is determined just by the Landau-Zener parameter in
addition to the density of the gas. Our approach of pairwise summation of the
microscopic binary transition probabilities leads to an intuitive explanation
for the observed saturation of the molecular production and recovers all atomic
loss curves of C.A. Regal et al. [Nature (London) 427, 47 (2003)] as well as

A State Space Framework for Automatic Forecasting Using Exponential Smoothing Methods.
We provide a new approach to automatic business forecasting based on an extended range of exponential smoothing methods. Each method in our taxonomy of exponential smoothing methods can be shown to be equivalent to the forecasts obtained from a state space model. This allows (1) the easy calculation of the likelihood, the AIC and other model selection criteria; (2) the computation of prediction intervals for each method; and (3) random simulation from the underlying state space model. We demonstrate the methods by applying them to the data from the M-competition on the M3-competition.Automatic forecasting, exponential smoothing, prediction intervals, state space models.
Paleoseismic and Slip-Rate Observations along the Honey Lake Fault Zone, Northeastern California, USA
The Honey Lake fault is a major strike-slip fault in northeastern California that accommodates northwest-directed right-lateral shear in the northern Walker Lane. We reexamine the fault’s paleoseismic history and slip rate by evaluating a natural stream bank exposure of the fault and offset terrace riser. Structural and stratigraphic relations within the modern stream cut, radiocarbon ages, and a detailed topographic survey of the offset terrace riser are used to estimate a Holocene fault slip rate of 1.7–0.6 mm/yr or more. We also interpret the occurrence of at least four surface-rupturing earthquakes during the last 7025 calendar years before present (B.P.). Three of the surface-rupturing earthquakes occurred prior to 4670 calendar years B.P. and have interevent times that range between 730 and 990 yr. The stratigraphic record is limited after ~4670 calendar years B.P., and records evidence for at least one more subsequent surface-rupturing earthquake
The Structure of AdS Black Holes and Chern Simons Theory in 2+1 Dimensions
We study anti-de Sitter black holes in 2+1 dimensions in terms of Chern
Simons gauge theory of anti-de Sitter group coupled to a source. Taking the
source to be an anti-de Sitter state specified by its Casimir invariants, we
show how all the relevant features of the black hole are accounted for. The
requirement that the source be a unitary representation leads to a discrete
tower of states which provide a microscopic model for the black hole.Comment: 17 pages, LaTex. The presentation in Section 5 was improved; other

Welding, brazing, and soldering handbook
Handbook gives information on the selection and application of welding, brazing, and soldering techniques for joining various metals. Summary descriptions of processes, criteria for process selection, and advantages of different methods are given
Early psychosocial stress predicts extra-pair copulations
Cheating on a mate, known as an extra-pair copulation (EPC), is considered unacceptable by most individuals. Nonetheless many individuals engage in such risky behaviors. Because individuals with high, as opposed to low, levels of early psychosocial stress are more risk prone and more likely to engage in opportunistic matings, we predicted that individuals reporting EPCs, one of many types of opportunistic mating (e.g., one-night stand, consecutive short-term relationships etc), have higher levels of early psychosocial stress than those who do not. Two types of EPCs were examined: EPC-self (EPC-S), having sex with someone other than one's mate, and EPC-other (EPC-O), having sex with someone else's mate. In a sample of 229 women and 161 men, significantly higher levels of early psychosocial stress were found amongst those reporting an EPC-S than those reporting none, irrespective of EPC-Os. Furthermore, the more EPC-Ss men, but not women, reported the higher their early psychosocial stress. Early psychosocial stress was not associated with EPC-Os irrespective of EPC-Ss. Participants were also classified into one of four groups (no EPCs, EPC-O only, EPC-S only, or EPC-S&O) which significantly interacted with early psychosocial stress. Results are discussed from adaptationist and mechanist perspectives and why early psychosocial stress was higher in individuals reporting EPC-Ss irrespective of EPC-Os, but not EPC-Os irrespective of EPC-Ss, than those not reporting the EPC of interest
