    Prevalence of Clostridium difficile toxin genes in Pretoria

    The hypervirulent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) ribotype 027 strain of Clostridium difficile produces toxins A, B and a binary toxin. Toxin detection kits are commonly used in diagnostic laboratories, but have been unsuccessful in detecting all of the relevant C. difficile strains, and the toxins produced. In this study, conventional PCR was used to detect the presence of the genes of toxin A, toxin B and the binary toxin of C. difficile. Eighty-four frozen (collected between 2006-2007) and 13 fresh (collected in 2010) stool specimens, obtained in Pretoria, were analysed. The genes for toxin A, toxin B and the binary toxin were detected in one of the fresh stool specimens. This may have implications for healthcare facilities, and suggests the possible emergence of the highly virulent PCR ribotype 027 strain of C. difficile in Pretoria. This emphasises the importance of continuous surveillance and monitoring of C. difficile outbreaks.http://www.sajei.co.za/index.php/SAJEIay201

    E-retailing ethics in Egypt and its effect on customer repurchase intention

    The theoretical understanding of online shopping behaviour has received much attention. Less focus has been given to the formation of the ethical issues that result from online shopper interactions with e-retailers. The vast majority of earlier research on this area is conceptual in nature and limited in scope by focusing on consumers’ privacy issues. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical model explaining what factors contribute to online retailing ethics and its effect on customer repurchase intention. The data were analysed using variance-based structural equation modelling, employing partial least squares regression. Findings indicate that the five factors of the online retailing ethics (security, privacy, non- deception, fulfilment/reliability, and corporate social responsibility) are strongly predictive of online consumers’ repurchase intention. The results offer important implications for e-retailers and are likely to stimulate further research in the area of e-ethics from the consumers’ perspective

    Towards Transparent Parallelization of Connectionist Systems

    Much work has been done in the area of parallel simulation of connectionist systems. However, usually parallel implementation issues for artificial neural networks have been discussed in general terms, but the actual parallel programs implement specific network models and are written in programming languages like C or C++. This paper deals with the transparent parallelization of neural networks. The goal is to automatically derive parallel code for MIMD and SPMD architectures from abstract descriptions of networks. In this, unit parallelism and training set parallelism are discussed. First, an outline of the abstract neural network description language CONNECT is given. The language combines procedural, functional, and object--oriented paradigms and allows for readable and, at the same time, complete definitions of connectionist systems.     No período de agosto de 1987 a julho de 1990, examinaram-se, na Seção de Enteroparasitoses do Instituto Adolfo Lutz, 241 amostras de fezes de crianças, com idade variável entre 1 e 48 meses, que apresentavam episódio agudo de diarréia e foram atendidas no Instituto da Criança do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo. Quarenta e duas (17,43%) amostras revelaram a presença de Cryptosporidium sp. após coloração por fucsina-carbólica. O achado de oocistos de Cryptosporidium sp. foi mais freqüente no período compreendido pelos meses de março a maio. Os autores discutem as associações entre Cryptosporidium sp. e outros agentes diarréicos.<br>During the period from August 1987 to July 1990, 241 fecal samples collected from 1 to 48 months old children with acute diarrhea and examined in the Child's Institute of Hospital das Clínicas of Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, were submitted to parasitological tests in the Enteroparasitosis Section of the Instituto Adolfo Lutz. Fourty two (17.43%) fecal samples showed Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts by carbol-fucsin stain. Parasitism by Cryptosporidium sp. was more frequent during the period comprised from March to May, in the studied three years.
