    Constraining the Skyrme effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of nuclei using isospin diffusion data from heavy ion collisions

    Recent analysis of the isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion collisions based on an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model with in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections has led to the extraction of a value of L=88±25L=88\pm 25 MeV for the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density. This imposes stringent constraints on both the parameters in the Skyrme effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei. Among the 21 sets of Skyrme interactions commonly used in nuclear structure studies, the 4 sets SIV, SV, Gσ_\sigma, and Rσ_\sigma are found to give LL values that are consistent with the extracted one. Further study on the correlations between the thickness of the neutron skin in finite nuclei and the nuclear matter symmetry energy in the Skyrme Hartree-Fock approach leads to predicted thickness of the neutron skin of 0.22±0.040.22\pm 0.04 fm for 208^{208}Pb, 0.29±0.040.29\pm 0.04 fm for 132^{132}Sn, and 0.22±0.040.22\pm 0.04 fm for 124^{124}Sn.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 Table, Talk given at 1) International Conference on Nuclear Structure Physics, Shanghai, 12-17 June, 2006; 2) 11th China National Nuclear Structure Physics Conference, Changchun, Jilin, 13-18 July, 200

    Particle acceleration and the origin of gamma-ray emission from Fermi Bubbles

    Fermi LAT has discovered two extended gamma-ray bubbles above and below the galactic plane. We propose that their origin is due to the energy release in the Galactic center (GC) as a result of quasi-periodic star accretion onto the central black hole. Shocks generated by these processes propagate into the Galactic halo and accelerate particles there. We show that electrons accelerated up to ~10 TeV may be responsible for the observed gamma-ray emission of the bubbles as a result of inverse Compton (IC) scattering on the relic photons. We also suggest that the Bubble could generate the flux of CR protons at energies > 10^15 eV because the shocks in the Bubble have much larger length scales and longer lifetimes in comparison with those in SNRs.     Within the framework of a multi-phase transport model, we study the equation of state and pressure anisotropy of the hot dense matter produced in central relativistic heavy ion collisions. Both are found to depend on the hadronization scheme and scattering cross sections used in the model. Furthermore, only partial thermalization is achieved in the produced matter as a result of its fast expansion

    Processing and characterization of nanofibrillated cellulose/layered silicate systems

    Recently, nanofibrillated cellulose with cationic functional groups was synthesized. This trimethylammonium-modified nanofibrillated cellulose (TMA-NFC) was applied in this study for the preparation of composites with various layered silicates. These belonged to the groups of montmorillonite, kaolin, talc, vermiculite, and mica. The respective composites were prepared by high-shear homogenization followed by filtration and hot-pressing. Data on crystal structures, chemical compositions, cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, density, and morphology of all clays and micas themselves as well as structure information of the corresponding composites have been collected. Possible microstructural features responsible for the composite appearances were tentatively identified. Principally, the interactions between TMA-NFC and the layered silicates were pronounced, due to electrostatic attraction of cationic cellulose fibrils and anionic silicate layers. This mutual interaction between TMA-NFC and layered silicate, however, was influenced not only by layered silicate properties but also by the composite preparation method, as discussed in this stud
