Jet conversions in a quark-gluon plasma
Quark and gluon jets traversing through a quark-gluon plasma not only lose
their energies but also can undergo flavor conversions. The conversion rates
via the elastic and the inelastic scatterings are evaluated in the lowest order in QCD.
Including both jet energy loss and conversions in the expanding quark-gluon
plasma produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions, we have found a net
conversion of quark to gluon jets. This reduces the difference between the
nuclear modification factors for quark and gluon jets in central heavy ion
collisions and thus enhances the and ratios at high
transverse momentum. However, a much larger net quark to gluon jet conversion
rate than the one given by the lowest-order QCD is needed to account for the
observed similar ratios in central Au+Au and p+p collisions at same energy.

Directed flow of neutral strange particles at AGS
Directed flow of neutral strange particles in heavy ion collisions at AGS is
studied in the ART transport model. Using a lambda mean-field potential which
is 2/3 of that for a nucleon as predicted by the constituent quark model,
lambdas are found to flow with protons but with a smaller flow parameter as
observed in experiments. For kaons, their repulsive potential, which is
calculated from the impulse approximation using the measured kaon-nucleon
scattering length, leads to a smaller anti-flow than that shown in the
preliminary E895 data. Implications of this discrepancy are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Forty-Four Pass Fibre Optic Loop for Improving the Sensitivity of Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors
A forty-four pass fibre optic surface plasmon resonance sensor that enhances
detection sensitivity according to the number of passes is demonstrated for the
first time. The technique employs a fibre optic recirculation loop that passes
the detection spot forty- four times, thus enhancing sensitivity by a factor of
forty-four. Presently, the total number of passes is limited by the onset of
lasing action of the recirculation loop. This technique offers a significant
sensitivity improvement for various types of plasmon resonance sensors that may

Trauma histories among justice-involved youth: findings from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.
BackgroundUp to 90% of justice-involved youth report exposure to some type of traumatic event. On average, 70% of youth meet criteria for a mental health disorder with approximately 30% of youth meeting criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Justice-involved youth are also at risk for substance use and academic problems, and child welfare involvement. Yet, less is known about the details of their trauma histories, and associations among trauma details, mental health problems, and associated risk factors.ObjectiveThis study describes detailed trauma histories, mental health problems, and associated risk factors (i.e., academic problems, substance/alcohol use, and concurrent child welfare involvement) among adolescents with recent involvement in the juvenile justice system.MethodThe National Child Traumatic Stress Network Core Data Set (NCTSN-CDS) is used to address these aims, among which 658 adolescents report recent involvement in the juvenile justice system as indexed by being detained or under community supervision by the juvenile court.ResultsAge of onset of trauma exposure was within the first 5 years of life for 62% of youth and approximately one-third of youth report exposure to multiple or co-occurring trauma types each year into adolescence. Mental health problems are prevalent with 23.6% of youth meeting criteria for PTSD, 66.1% in the clinical range for externalizing problems, and 45.5% in the clinical range for internalizing problems. Early age of onset of trauma exposure was differentially associated with mental health problems and related risk factors among males and females.ConclusionsThe results indicate that justice-involved youth report high rates of trauma exposure and that this trauma typically begins early in life, is often in multiple contexts, and persists over time. Findings provide support for establishing trauma-informed juvenile justice systems that can respond to the needs of traumatized youth
Identified Hadrons and Jet Chemistry for p+p and Au+Au Collisions at RHIC
The study of hadron spectra at high in p+p collisions provides a good
test of perturbative quantum chromo-dynamic calculations (pQCD) and baseline
for measurements of nuclear modification factors in Au+Au collisions. Using
events triggered by the Barrel Electro-Magnetic Calorimeter, identified charged
hadron transverse momentum () spectra are measured up to 15 GeV/ at
mid-rapidity ( 0.5) and neutral kaon spectra up to 12
GeV/ in p + p collisions at = 200 GeV. The particle ratios
of , and / in p + p
collisions are shown and compared with next-to-leading order pQCD calculations.
In central Au+Au collisions, we report nuclear modification factors ()
for pion, kaon, proton and and discuss several model calculations:
color-charge dependence of jet quenching and jet conversion. Finally,
centrality dependence of at high ( 5.5 GeV/c) for kaon are

Far Ultraviolet Observations of the Dwarf Nova VW Hyi in Quiescence
We present a 904-1183 A spectrum of the dwarf nova VW Hydri taken with the
Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer during quiescence, eleven days after a
normal outburst, when the underlying white dwarf accreter is clearly exposed in
the far ultraviolet. However, model fitting show that a uniform temperature
white dwarf does not reproduce the overall spectrum, especially at the shortest
wavelengths. A better approximation to the spectrum is obtained with a model
consisting of a white dwarf and a rapidly rotating ``accretion belt''. The
white dwarf component accounts for 83% of the total flux, has a temperature of
23,000K, a v sin i = 400 km/s, and a low carbon abundance. The best-fit
accretion belt component accounts for 17% of the total flux, has a temperature
of about 48,000-50,000K, and a rotation rate Vrot sin i around 3,000-4,000
km/s. The requirement of two components in the modeling of the spectrum of VW
Hyi in quiescence helps to resolve some of the differences in interpretation of
ultraviolet spectra of VW Hyi in quiescence. However, the physical existence of
a second component (and its exact nature) in VW Hyi itself is still relatively
uncertain, given the lack of better models for spectra of the inner disk in a

Kaon differential flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions
Using a relativistic transport model, we study the azimuthal momentum
asymmetry of kaons with fixed transverse momentum, i.e., the differential flow,
in heavy-ion collisions at beam momentum of 6 GeV/c per nucleon, available from
the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at the Brookhaven National
Laboratory (BNL). We find that in the absence of kaon potential the kaon
differential flow is positive and increases with transverse momentum as that of
nucleons. The repulsive kaon potential as predicted by theoretical models,
however, reduces the kaon differetnial flow, changing it to negative for kaons
with low momenta. Cancellation between the negative differential flow at low
mementa and the positive one at high momenta is then responsible for the
experimentally observed nearly vanishing in-plane transverse flow of kaons in
heavy ion experiments.Comment: Phys. Rev. C in pres
Constraining properties of neutron stars with heavy-ion reactions in terrestrial laboratories
Heavy-ion reactions provide a unique means to investigate the equation of
state (EOS) of neutron-rich nuclear matter, especially the density dependence
of the nuclear symmetry energy . The latter plays an important
role in understanding many key issues in both nuclear physics and astrophysics.
Recent analyses of heavy-ion reactions have already put a stringent constraint
on the around the saturation density. This subsequently allowed
us to constrain significantly the radii and cooling mechanisms of neutron stars

Partonic effects on anisotropic flows at RHIC
We report recent results from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model on the
azimuthal anisotropies of particle momentum distributions in heavy ion
collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These include higher-order
anisotropic flows and their scaling, the rapidity dependence of anisotropic

Effective hadronic Lagrangian for charm mesons
An effective hadronic Lagrangian including the charm mesons is introduced to
study their interactions in hadronic matter. Using coupling constants that are
determined either empirically or by the SU(4) symmetry, we have evaluated the
absorption cross sections of and the scattering cross sections of
