A Case of Extensive Infl ammatory Changes (Osteomyelitis) in an Infant’s Skeleton from the Medieval Burial Ground (11th–12th c) in Wawrzeńczyce (Near Krakow)
The aim of this study was to diagnose and describe extensive infl ammatory changes in a child’s skeleton from
Wawrzeńczyce, (the medieval period). The aim of the analysis was to determine the nature of the infl ammatory changes
and their etiology by means of macroscopic techniques as well as X-ray analysis. The tests revealed that the individual
suffered from a hematogenous multifocal osteitis. This condition might have been a result of an acute or sub-acute osteitis,
and the untreated form of osteomyelitis might have contributed to the infection of the entire developing organism, leading
to death
Short-channel structured reactor as a catalytic afterburner
Short-channel structures of triangular and sinu-
soidal channel cross-sectional shape were examined exper-
imentally to find their heat (or mass) transfer and
flow friction (flow resistance) characteristics. A particular
emphasis was placed on influence of the channels length
(referred to its hydraulic diameter) on transport and hydro-
dynamic characteristics. The transport and friction proper-
ties were correlated in terms of dimensionless channel
length with satisfactory accuracy. The dimensionless
channel length was proved to be a key factor that determines
the transport and friction coefficients. Comparison with
ceramic monolith has shown possibility of using the struc-
tures in automotive catalytic converters
2D-Raman correlation spectroscopy as a method to recognize of the interaction at the interface of carbon layer and albumin
In modern nanomaterial production, including those
for medical purposes, carbon based materials are important, due to their inert nature and interesting properties. The essential attribute for biomaterials is their
biocompatibility, which indicates way of interactions
with host cells and body fluids. The aim of our work
was to analyze two types of model carbon layers differing primarily in topography, and developing their
interactions with blood plasma proteins. The first layer
was formed of pyrolytic carbon C (CVD) and the second
was constructed of multi-walled carbon nanotubes obtained by electrophoretic deposition (EPD), both set on
a Ti support. The performed complex studies of carbon
layers demonstrate significant dissimilarities regarding
their interaction with chosen blood proteins, and points
to the differences related to the origin of a protein:
whether it is animal or human. However the basic examinations, such as: wettability test and nano sctatch
tests were not sufficient to explain the material properties. In contrast, Raman microspectroscopy thoroughly
decodes the phenomena occurring at the carbon structures in contact with the selected blood proteins. The
2D correlation method selects the most intense interaction and points out the different mechanism of interactions of proteins with the nanocarbon surfaces and
differentiation due to the nature of the protein and its
source: animal or human. The 2D correlation of the
Raman spectra of the MWCNT layer+HSA interphase
proves an increase in albumin β-conformation. The presented results explain the unique properties of the Clayers (CVD) in contact with human albumin
The correlation of mutations and expressions of genes within the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway in breast cancer : a preliminary study
There is an urgent need to seek new molecular biomarkers helpful in diagnosing and treating breast cancer. In this elaboration, we performed a molecular analysis of mutations and expression of genes within the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway in patients with ductal breast cancer of various malignancy levels. We recognized significant correlations between the expression levels of the studied genes. We also performed a bioinformatics analysis of the data available on the international database TCGA and compared them with our own research. Studies on mutations and expression of genes were conducted using High-Resolution Melt PCR (HRM-PCR), Allele-Specific-quantitative PCR (ASP-qPCR), Real-Time PCR molecular methods in a group of women with ductal breast cancer. Bioinformatics analysis was carried out using web source Ualcan and bc-GenExMiner. In the studied group of women, it was observed that the prevalence of mutations in the studied PIK3CA and AKT1 genes was 29.63%. It was stated that the average expression level of the PIK3CA, PIK3R1, PTEN genes in the group of breast cancer patients is lower in comparison to the control group, while the average expression level of the AKT1 and mTOR genes in the studied group was higher in comparison to the control group. It was also indicated that in the group of patients with mutations in the area of the PIK3CA and AKT1 genes, the PIK3CA gene expression level is statistically significantly lower than in the group without mutations. According to our knowledge, we demonstrate, for the first time, that there is a very strong positive correlation between the levels of AKT1 and mTOR gene expression in the case of patients with mutations and without mutations
Materiał i metody. Geological and geomorphological condition of the hydrographic network pattern in the catchment of the Upper Wołosatka Stream (High Bieszczady Mts)
Przeprowadzono szczegółowe kartowanie hydrograficzne obejmujące m.in. układ sieci rzecznej
w górnej części zlewni Wołosatki. Badania ukierunkowane były na określenie związków między
współczesnym układem sieci rzecznej a budową geologiczną i rzeźbą. Dominującą rolę w kształtowaniu
układu sieci rzecznej odgrywa przebieg warstw skalnych oraz obecność stref nieciągłości tektonicznych.
Upad warstw skalnych decyduje o możliwości retencji wód opadowych i obok uwarunkowań
9.8 Detailed hydrographic investigation was carried out in the catchment of Upper Wołosatka
Stream. The characteristics cover the structure of hydrographic network, namely its pattern. Detailed
map of stream network was created. The main factors controlling the development of the hydrological
network were discussed. Geological structures played the most important role in the development
of hydrographic network. The capacity of groundwater aquifer is strictly connected with the dip of
flysch strata hoverer it also reflects the rain shadow effect. The unit discharge in the catchment can
range in dry periods from 2.1 up to 9.8 $l/s/km^{2}
Springs of the upper Wołosatka River catchment in the Wysokie Bieszczady Mountains.
Paper presents results of mapping of springs of the upper Wołosatka River catchment (Wysokie Bieszczady Mts. -Outer Carpathians). Springs were the most common outflow type in the area (52.55%). Outflow density in the area studied (8.32 km2) was equal 23.56 per km2, while spring rate was 12.4 per km2. Outflow discharges were low and very low- most springs belong to Meinzer classes VI-VIII. Only seven springs had discharges higher than 0.5 dm3/s, and three-over 1 dm3/s. The spatial outflow distribution strongly depends on geology, tectonics and river valley direction. High density of outflows was especially observed within the Bukowe Berdo anticline, where the Otryt sandstones are alternated by thin-bedded flysch of high shale content. All these layers dip down in the opposite direction to the slope, which creates numerous springs and other outflows. Furthermore, a spectacular spring line is visible in the field lying along the Halicz fault
