Flight-test evaluation of two electronic display formats for approach to landing under instrument conditions
The results of a flight evaluation of two electronic display formats for the approach to landing under instrument conditions are presented. The evaluation was conducted for a base-line electronic display format and for the same format with runway symbology and track information added. The evaluation was conducted during 3 deg, manual straight-in approaches with and without initial localizer offsets. Flight path tracking performance data and pilot subjective comments were examined with regard to the pilot's ability to capture and maintain localizer and glide slope by using both display formats
Depression and Contributors to Vocational Satisfaction in Roman Catholic Secular Clergy
A nationally selected, random sample of Roman Catholic secular (i.e., diocesan) priests was examined using the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale and an instrument developed for this study to assess contributors to priestsâ vocational satisfaction. In addition, a self-report inventory gathered information regarding participantsâ demographics as well as four categories of predictor variables (i.e., overall level of vocational satisfaction, social support, spiritual activities, physical environment). The study yielded a response rate of 45%. Secular clergy reported rates of depression approximately seven times greater than are found in the general population, and also indicated that the recent sexual abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic church had negatively affected their mood. Priestsâ engagement in sacramental activities contributed greatly to their vocational satisfaction, and low levels of vocational satisfaction were found to be most predictive of depression. Factors comprising priestsâ vocational satisfaction were External Manifestations (e.g., preaching, teaching), Internal Manifestations (e.g., prayer life, afïŹrmation of Godâs call), and Social Manifestations (e.g., relationships with parishioners, appreciation from others)
A piloted-simulation evaluation of two electronic display formats for approach and landing
The results of a piloted-simulation evaluation of the benefits of adding runway symbology and track information to a baseline electronic-attitude-director-indicator (EADI) format for the approach-to-landing task were presented. The evaluation was conducted for the baseline format and for the baseline format with the added symbology during 3 deg straight-in approaches with calm, cross-wind, and turbulence conditions. Flight-path performance data and pilot subjective comments were examined with regard to the pilot's tracking performance and mental workload for both display formats. The results show that the addition of a perspective runway image and relative track information to a basic situation-information EADI format improve the tracking performance both laterally and vertically during an approach-to-landing task and that the mental workload required to assess the approach situation was thus reduced as a result of integration of information
Twenty-one centimeter tomography with foregrounds
Twenty-one centimeter tomography is emerging as a powerful tool to explore
the end of the cosmic dark ages and the reionization epoch, but it will only be
as good as our ability to accurately model and remove astrophysical foreground
contamination. Previous treatments of this problem have focused on the angular
structure of the signal and foregrounds and what can be achieved with limited
spectral resolution (bandwidths in the 1 MHz range). In this paper we introduce
and evaluate a ``blind'' method to extract the multifrequency 21cm signal by
taking advantage of the smooth frequency structure of the Galactic and
extragalactic foregrounds. We find that 21 cm tomography is typically limited
by foregrounds on scales Mpc and limited by noise on scales Mpc, provided that the experimental bandwidth can be made substantially
smaller than 0.1 MHz. Our results show that this approach is quite promising
even for scenarios with rather extreme contamination from point sources and
diffuse Galactic emission, which bodes well for upcoming experiments such as
LOFAR, MWA, PAST, and SKA.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Revised version including various cases with

African American and European American Therapistsâ Experiences of Addressing Race in Cross-Racial Psychotherapy Dyads
Using Consensual Qualitative Research, 12 licensed psychologistsâ overall experiences addressing race in psychotherapy were investigated, as were their experiences addressing race in a specific cross-racial therapy dyad. Results indicated that only African American psychologists reported routinely addressing race with clients of color or when race was part of a clientâs presenting concern. European American psychologists indicated that they would address race if clients raised the topic, and some reported that they did not normally address race with racially different clients. When discussing a specific cross-racial dyad, African American therapists more often than European American therapists addressed race because they perceived client discomfort. Only European American therapists reported feeling uncomfortable addressing race, but therapists of both races perceived that such discussions had positive effects
Thermal performance of two heat exchangers for thermoelectric generators
Thermal performance of heat exchanger is important for potential application in integrated solar cell/module and
thermoelectric generator (TEG) system. Usually, thermal performance of a heat exchanger for TEGs is analysed
by using a 1D heat conduction theory which ignores the detailed phenomena associated with thermo-hydraulics.
In this paper, thermal and mass transports in two different exchangers are simulated by means of a steady-state,
3D turbulent flow k -e model with a heat conduction module under various flow rates. In order to simulate an
actual working situation of the heat exchangers, hot block with an electric heater is included in the model. TEG
model is simplified by using a 1D heat conduction theory, so its thermal performance is equivalent to a real TEG.
Natural convection effect on the outside surfaces of the computational model is considered. Computational
models and methods used are validated under transient thermal and electrical experimental conditions of a TEG.
It is turned out that the two heat exchangers designed have a better thermal performance compared with an
existing heat exchanger for TEGs, and more importantly, the fin heat exchanger is more compact and has nearly
half temperature rise compared with the tube heat exchanger
