    Neonatal umbilical inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors represent a tumor class of intermediate malignant potential predominantly seen in children and adolescents. Here is the first description of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor at the umbilicus of a neonate. In neonates the main sites of presentation are equally distributed between the thoracic and the abdominal region. In a third of the neonates the tumor is identified on an antenatal scan. The preferred treatment option is resection of the tumor. Spontaneous regression has been described. Keywords: inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, neonatal tumor, surgical resection, umbilicu

Transurethral resection and surveillance of bladder cancer supported by 5-aminolevulinic acid-induced fluorescence endoscopy

Purpose: We determined whether neoplastic disease, which was missed under white light can be found during transurethral resection of bladder cancer by 5-aminolevulinic acid-induced porphyrin fluorescence. Materials and Methods: 5-Aminolevulinic acid-induced fluorescence endoscopy was carried out in 328 cases. A 3% 5-aminolevulinic acid solution was instilled intravesically in a mean time of 2.8 h before endoscopy, The fluorescence was excited by a special incoherent light source which provided blue light in addition to white light. Results: In 82 (25%) cases additional neoplastic lesions were found only because of their red porphyrin fluorescence which was induced by 5-aminolevulinic acid. 31% of these neoplastic foci which were found in normal and nonspecific inflamed mucosa had a poorly differentiated histology. Conclusions: 5-Aminolevulinjc acid facilitates detection of neoplastic disease during transurethral resection of bladder cancer and increases the accuracy of diagnosis

Enhancer of the rudimentary gene homologue (ERH) expression pattern in sporadic human breast cancer and normal breast tissue

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The human gene <it>ERH </it>(Enhancer of the Rudimentary gene Homologue) has previously been identified by <it>in silico </it>analysis of four million ESTs as a gene differentially expressed in breast cancer. The biological function of ERH protein has not been fully elucidated, however functions in cell cycle progression, pyrimidine metabolism a possible interaction with p21(Cip1/Waf1) via the Ciz1 zinc finger protein have been suggested. The aim of the present study was a systematic characterization of <it>ERH </it>expression in human breast cancer in order to evaluate possible clinical applications of this molecule.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The expression pattern of <it>ERH </it>was analyzed using multiple tissue northern blots (MTN) on a panel of 16 normal human tissues and two sets of malignant/normal breast and ovarian tissue samples. <it>ERH </it>expression was further analyzed in breast cancer and normal breast tissues and in tumorigenic as well as non-tumorigenic breast cancer cell lines, using quantitative RT-PCR and non-radioisotopic <it>in situ </it>hybridization (ISH).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among normal human tissues, <it>ERH </it>expression was most abundant in testis, heart, ovary, prostate, and liver. In the two MTN sets of malignant/normal breast and ovarian tissue,<it>ERH </it>was clearly more abundantly expressed in all tumours than in normal tissue samples. Quantitative RT-PCR analyses showed that <it>ERH </it>expression was significantly more abundant in tumorigenic than in non-tumorigenic breast cancer cell lines (4.5-fold; p = 0.05, two-tailed Mann-Whitney U-test); the same trend was noted in a set of 25 primary invasive breast cancers and 16 normal breast tissue samples (2.5-fold; p = 0.1). These findings were further confirmed by non-radioisotopic ISH in human breast cancer and normal breast tissue.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p><it>ERH </it>expression is clearly up-regulated in malignant as compared with benign breast cells both in primary human breast cancer and in cell models of breast cancer. Since similar results were obtained for ovarian cancer, ERH overexpression may be implicated in the initiation and/or progression of certain human malignancies. Further studies on large breast cancer tissue cohorts should determine whether ERH could function as a prognostic factor or even a drug target in the treatment of human breast cancer.</p

The development of experimental chamber and methodological approach for gas-phase hydrogen permeation study

    Get PDF
In this work, the development of an experimental chamber and a technique for conducting experiments to study the permeation of hydrogen through metal membranes using an automated complex Gas Reaction Controller are realized. This complex makes it possible to carry out experiments to study the hydrogen permeation with the following parameters: hydrogen inlet pressure up to 50 atmospheres; the temperature in the chamber is from -30 °С to 1000 °С. The sample size is limited to 10 mm. The procedure for calculating the diffusion coefficient, based on the Fick equation, is presented in work. The study of the hydrogen permeation in a titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V is presented in this research

The work is devoted to the development of software tools that allow data extraction, processing and analysis to automate the search for possible conflicts of interest between the customer and the supplier. As a result of the research, software was developed to partially solve the problem of automating the search for violations related to the conflict of interests of the customer and the supplier in the field of public procurement, which can significantly reduce the search for violations

Compositional mapping of surfaces in atomic force microscopy

We propose a method for mapping the composition of a surface by using an amplitude modulation atomic force microscope operated without tip-surface mechanical contact. The method consists in exciting the first two modes of the microcantilever. The nonlinear dynamics of the tip motion, the coupling of its first two modes, and the sensitivity of the second mode to long-range attractive forces allows us to use this mode to probe compositional changes while the signal from the first mode is used to image the sample surface. We demonstrate that the second mode has a sensitivity to surface force variations below 10−11 N.The authors acknowledge helpful discussions with A. San Paulo.
