    Back-reaction in a cylinder

    Get PDF
A system is studied in which initially a strong classical electric field exists within an infinitely-long cylinder and no charges are present. Subsequently, within the cylinder, pairs of charged particles tunnel out from the vacuum and the current produced through their acceleration by the field acts back on the field, setting up plasma oscillations. This yields a rough model of phenomena that may occur in the pre-equilibrium formation phase of a quark-gluon plasma. In an infinite volume, this back-reaction has been studied in a field-theory description, and it has been found that the results of a full calculation of this sort are well represented in a much simpler transport formalism. It is the purpose here to explore that comparison for a situation involving a cylindrical volume of given radius.Comment: 19 pages plus 13 figure

    Dileptons from Disoriented Chiral Condensates

    Get PDF
Disoriented chiral condensates or long wavelength pionic oscillations and their interaction with the thermal environment can be a significant source of dileptons. We calculate the yield of such dilepton production within the linear sigma model, both in a quantal mean-field treatment and in a semi-classical approximation. We then illustrate the basic features of the dilepton spectrum in a schematic model. We find that dilepton yield with invariant mass near and below 2mπ2m_{\pi} due to the soft pion modes can be up to two orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding equilibrium yield.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, uses epsf-styl

Electrostatic pair creation and recombination in quantum plasmas

The collective production of electron-positron pairs by electrostatic waves in quantum plasmas is investigated. In particular, a semi-classical governing set of equation for a self-consistent treatment of pair creation by the Schwinger mechanism in a quantum plasma is derived.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in JETP Letter

    Pair creation: back-reactions and damping

    Get PDF
We solve the quantum Vlasov equation for fermions and bosons, incorporating spontaneous pair creation in the presence of back-reactions and collisions. Pair creation is initiated by an external impulse field and the source term is non-Markovian. A simultaneous solution of Maxwell's equation in the presence of feedback yields an internal current and electric field that exhibit plasma oscillations with a period tau_pl. Allowing for collisions, these oscillations are damped on a time-scale, tau_r, determined by the collision frequency. Plasma oscillations cannot affect the early stages of the formation of a quark-gluon plasma unless tau_r >> tau_pl and tau_pl approx. 1/Lambda_QCD approx 1 fm/c.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure, REVTEX, epsfig.st

Particle Production and Effective Thermalization in Inhomogeneous Mean Field Theory

    Get PDF
As a toy model for dynamics in nonequilibrium quantum field theory we consider the abelian Higgs model in 1+1 dimensions with fermions. In the approximate dynamical equations, inhomogeneous classical (mean) Bose fields are coupled to quantized fermion fields, which are treated with a mode function expansion. The effective equations of motion imply e.g. Coulomb scattering, due to the inhomogeneous gauge field. The equations are solved numerically. We define time dependent fermion particle numbers with the help of the single-time Wigner function and study particle production starting from inhomogeneous initial conditions. The particle numbers are compared with the Fermi-Dirac distribution parametrized by a time dependent temperature and chemical potential. We find that the fermions approximately thermalize locally in time.Comment: 16 pages + 6 eps figures, some clarifications and two references added, typos corrected; to appear in Phys.Rev.

Altered thermoregulation in the iguana disposaurus dorsalis following exercise

    1. 1.|Seven desert iguanas ran on a motorized treadmill for 20-min periods. Before, during and after exercise, the iguanas were in a thermal gradient which allowed them to thermoregulate behaviourally.2. 2.|For several hours following exercise, the iguanas selected warmer ambient temperatures, resulting in small, but statistically significant, increases in body temperature.3. 3.|The increases in temperature were proportional to the exercise intensity.4. 4.|These changes were not observed if exercised was preceded by administration of the antipyretic drug, sodium salicylate.5. 5.|These data support the hypothesis that exercise causes a change in central thermoregulatory control which may be similar to fever caused by infection.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/25757/1/0000318.pd

Schwinger Mechanism for Gluon Pair Production in the Presence of Arbitrary Time Dependent Chromo-Electric Field

We study Schwinger mechanism for gluon pair production in the presence of arbitrary time-dependent chromo-electric background field Ea(t)E^a(t) with arbitrary color index aa=1,2,...8 in SU(3) by directly evaluating the path integral. We obtain an exact expression for the probability of non-perturbative gluon pair production per unit time per unit volume and per unit transverse momentum dWd4xd2pT\frac{dW}{d^4x d^2p_T} from arbitrary Ea(t)E^a(t). We show that the tadpole (or single gluon) effective action does not contribute to the non-perturbative gluon pair production rate dWd4xd2pT\frac{dW}{d^4x d^2p_T}. We find that the exact result for non-perturbative gluon pair production is independent of all the time derivatives dnEa(t)dtn\frac{d^nE^a(t)}{dt^n} where n=1,2,....n=1,2,....\infty and has the same functional dependence on two casimir invariants [Ea(t)Ea(t)][E^a(t)E^a(t)] and [dabcEa(t)Eb(t)Ec(t)]2[d_{abc}E^a(t)E^b(t)E^c(t)]^2 as the constant chromo-electric field EaE^a result with the replacement: EaEa(t)E^a \to E^a(t). This result may be relevant to study the production of a non-perturbative quark-gluon plasma at RHIC and LHC.Comment: 13 pages latex, Published in European Physical Journal

Twitter and non-elites. Interpreting power dynamics in the life story of the (#)BRCA Twitter stream

    Get PDF
In May 2013 and March 2015, actress Angelina Jolie wrote in the New York Times about her choice to undergo preventive surgery. In her two op-eds she explained that - as a carrier of the BRCA1 gene mutation - preventive surgery was the best way to lower her heightened risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. By applying a digital methods approach to BRCA-related tweets from 2013 and 2015, before, during and after the exposure of Jolie’s story, this study maps and interprets Twitter discursive dynamics at two time points of the BRCA Twitter stream. Findings show an evolution in curation and framing dynamics occurring between 2013 and 2015, with individual patient advocates replacing advocacy organisations as top curators of BRCA content and coming to prominence as providers of specialist illness narratives. These results suggest that between 2013 and 2015, Twitter went from functioning primarily as an organisation-centred news reporting mechanism, to working as a crowdsourced specialist awareness system. This paper advances a twofold contribution. First, it points at Twitter’s fluid functionality for an issue public and suggests that by looking at the life story – rather than at a single time point – of an issue-based Twitter stream we can track the evolution of power roles underlying discursive practices and better interpret the emergence of non-elite actors in the public arena. Second, the study provides evidence of the rise of activist cultures that rely on fluid, non-elite, collective and individual social media engagement

The kinetic description of vacuum particle creation in the oscillator representation

The oscillator representation is used for the non-perturbative description of vacuum particle creation in a strong time-dependent electric field in the framework of scalar QED. It is shown that the method can be more effective for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equation (KE) in comparison with the Bogoliubov method of time-dependent canonical transformations. This KE is used for the investigation of vacuum creation in periodical linear and circular polarized electric fields and also in the case of the presence of a constant magnetic field, including the back reaction problem. In particular, these examples are applied for a model illustration of some features of vacuum creation of electron-positron plasma within the planned experiments on the X-ray free electron lasers.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, v2: a reference added; some changes in tex

A kinetic approach to eta' production from a CP-odd phase

The production of (eta,eta')- mesons during the decay of a CP-odd phase is studied within an evolution operator approach. We derive a quantum kinetic equation starting from the Witten-DiVecchia-Veneziano Lagrangian for pseudoscalar mesons containing a U_A(1) symmetry breaking term. The non-linear vacuum mean field for the flavour singlet pseudoscalar meson is treated as a classical, self-interacting background field with fluctuations assumed to be small. The numerical solution provides the time evolution of momentum distribution function of produced eta'- mesons after a quench at the deconfinement phase transition. We show that the time evolution of the momentum distribution of the produced mesons depend strongly on the shape of the effective potential at the end of the quench, exhibiting either parametric or tachyonic resonances. Quantum statistical effects are essential and lead to a pronounced Bose enhancement of the low momentum states.Comment: 10 pages, latex, epsfig, 6 figure
