An instability mechanism for particulate pipe flow
We present linear stability analysis for a simple model of particle-laden
pipe flow. The model consists of a continuum approximation for the particles
two-way coupled to the fluid velocity field via Stokes drag (Saffman 1962). We
extend previous analysis in a channel (Klinkenberg et al. 2011) to allow for
the initial distribution of particles to be inhomogeneous and in particular
consider the effect of allowing the particles to be preferentially located
around one radius in accordance with experimental observations. This simple
modification of the problem is enough to alter the stability properties of the
flow, and in particular can lead to a linear instability at experimentally
realistic parameters. The results are compared to the experimental work of
Matas et al. (2004a) and are shown to be consistent with the reported flow

Enhancing Bayesian risk prediction for epidemics using contact tracing
Contact tracing data collected from disease outbreaks has received relatively
little attention in the epidemic modelling literature because it is thought to
be unreliable: infection sources might be wrongly attributed, or data might be
missing due to resource contraints in the questionnaire exercise. Nevertheless,
these data might provide a rich source of information on disease transmission
rate. This paper presents novel methodology for combining contact tracing data
with rate-based contact network data to improve posterior precision, and
therefore predictive accuracy. We present an advancement in Bayesian inference
for epidemics that assimilates these data, and is robust to partial contact
tracing. Using a simulation study based on the British poultry industry, we
show how the presence of contact tracing data improves posterior predictive

Psychometric validation of the Dutch translation of the quality of life in reflux and dyspepsia (QOLRAD) questionnaire in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Quality of Life in Reflux and Dyspepsia (QOLRAD) questionnaire is one of the best-characterized disease-specific instruments that captures health-related problems and symptom-patterns in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This paper reports the psychometric validation of a Dutch translation of the QOLRAD questionnaire in gastroenterology outpatients with GERD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Patients completed the QOLRAD questionnaire at visit 1 (baseline), visit 2 (after 2, 4 or 8 weeks of acute treatment with esomeprazole 40 mg once daily), and visit 4 (after 6 months with on-demand esomeprazole 40 mg once daily or continuous esomeprazole 20 mg once daily). Symptoms were assessed at each visit, and patient satisfaction was assessed at visits 2 and 4.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 1166 patients entered in the study, 97.3% had moderate or severe heartburn and 55.5% had moderate or severe regurgitation at baseline. At visit 2, symptoms of heartburn and regurgitation were mild or absent in 96.7% and 97.7%, respectively, and 95.3% of patients reported being satisfied with the treatment. The internal consistency and reliability of the QOLRAD questionnaire (range: 0.83-0.92) supported construct validity. Convergent validity was moderate to low. Known-groups validity was confirmed by a negative correlation between the QOLRAD score and clinician-assessed severity of GERD symptoms. Effect sizes (1.15-1.93) and standardized response means (1.17-1.86) showed good responsiveness to change. GERD symptoms had a negative impact on patients' lives.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The psychometric characteristics of the Dutch translation of the QOLRAD questionnaire were found to be satisfactory, with good reliability and responsiveness to change, although convergent validity was at best moderate.</p
Influence of Ti on the hot ductility of Nb containing steels
The influence of a low Ti addition, (~0.01%) on the hot ductility of Nb containing steels has been examined. For conventional cooling conditions in which an average cooling rate from the melting point to the test temperature was used, the ductility decreased markedly with the addition of Ti. However, when cooling conditions after melting were more in accord with the thermal heat treatment undergone by the strand
during continuous casting, i.e. cooling is fast to begin with, reaches a minimum and then reheats, after which the temperature falls more slowly to the test temperature, the Ti addition was found to be beneficial
Malaria and urbanization in sub-Saharan Africa
There are already 40 cities in Africa with over 1 million inhabitants and the United Nations Environmental Programme estimates that by 2025 over 800 million people will live in urban areas. Recognizing that malaria control can improve the health of the vulnerable and remove a major obstacle to their economic development, the Malaria Knowledge Programme of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Systemwide Initiative on Malaria and Agriculture convened a multi-sectoral technical consultation on urban malaria in Pretoria, South Africa from 2nd to 4th December, 2004. The aim of the meeting was to identify strategies for the assessment and control of urban malaria. This commentary reflects the discussions held during the meeting and aims to inform researchers and policy makers of the potential for containing and reversing the emerging problem of urban malaria
Ferritic Nb-alloyed Cr-Steel in simulated strip casting process
Nb alloyed ferritic Cr-steel is usually produced by continuous casting with following hot and cold rolling procedure. In the laboratory scale the possible new route via strip casting was studied. The scope of the investigation in simulated process route was the development of microstructure and precipitations. In the experiments process parameters similar to those of the real strip caster were chosen, then those of hot rolling and cold rolling of such cast strips. The quickly solidified layer was produced by immersion of a steel substrate under vacuum into melt. The microstructure showed small niobium precipitates in the grain matrix and at the grain boundaries. Their size and distribution was evaluated for different niobium contents and cooling rates in the as-solidified structure. The diffusion controlled change of the precipitate morphology was also analysed after preheating and rolling. Reprecipitation and precipitate growth, as well as dissolution of precipitations at the grain boundaries were observed. The effect of various cooling rates and niobium content on the shape and formation of niobium containing precipitates and on the grain boundary is discussed. Thermodynamic calculations using FactSage were carried out in order to predict the precipitation of Nb-rich phases in ferritic stainless steels. The effect of the chemical composition and temperature on the thermodynamic stability of these precipitates was evaluated
A mathematical model for the intracellular circadian rhythm generator
A mathematical model for the intracellular circadian rhythm generator has been studied, based on a negative feedback of protein products on the transcription rate of their genes. The study is an attempt at examining minimal but biologically realistic requirements for a negative molecular feedback loop involving considerably faster reactions, to produce (slow) circadian oscillations. The model included mRNA and protein production and degradation, along with a negative feedback of the proteins upon mRNA production. The protein production process was described solely by its total duration and a nonlinear term, whereas also the feedback included nonlinear interactions among protein molecules. This system was found to produce robust oscillations in protein and mRNA levels over a wide range of parameter values.
