    Domestic violence counseling techniques: Indicators of a change in the philosophy of the movement against domestic violence

    The movement against domestic violence began as a grassroots effort to eliminate and to prevent the abuse of women. In the beginning, workers in the movement placed great emphasis on societal causes and solutions to the problem and great strides have been taken toward this end. However, over the last twenty years, the movement has placed greater and greater emphasis on individual counseling techniques based on a humanistic approach of individual accountability and responsibility, resulting in the placement of blame for the abuse on the victim; In group counseling sessions there is very little discussion of societal conditions, and no discussion of political alternatives for eliminating the abuse of women. Governmental agencies over the last thirty years that have contributed funding to these agencies, perhaps seeking to undermine societal solutions to the problem. The emphasis on counseling continues, however, even though there is no concrete evidence that it is effective

    Toward A Theory Of Procedural Rhetorical Systems: Demonstrations Of Player Agency In Uptake Of Rules In Video Games

    This paper expands Ian Bogost’s (2007) procedural rhetoric by broadening the rhetorical view of games to encompass the arguments that they make not just about the material, but about themselves. The theory of procedural rhetorical systems (PRSes) views game systems as arguing toward how players should be following their rules, and like in any form of rhetoric, players possess agency in how they take up these arguments and how closely they follow rules. To demonstrate this, this paper analyzes a specific game, the 1996 platformer Super Mario 64, alongside various digital artifacts demonstrating how players have taken it up, including videos, forum discussions, wiki entries, and comments. This paper divides the different ways players can view PRSes into three uptake lenses (ULs), which are standard, speedrunner, and modder uptake. Where standard uptake represents taking up a game’s PRSes according to their exact argument, speedrunner and modder uptake represent taking them up in alternative ways, either with intent of beating the game as fast as possible or with the knowledge that rules can be modified and even transplanted from one place to another. These varied ULs prove that game rules are argued to players via PRSes and that players have agency in how they take them up

    In-Plane Magnetolumnescence of Modulation-Doped GaAs/AlGaAs Coupled Double Quantum Wells

    In-plane magnetic field photoluminescence spectra from a series of GaAs/AlGaAs coupled double quantum wells show distinctive doublet structures related to the symmetric and antisymmetric states. The magnetic field behavior of the upper transition from the antisymmetric state strongly depends on sample mobility. In lower mobility samples, the transition energy shows an N\cal N-type kink with fields (namely a maximum followed by a minimum), whereas higher mobility samples have a linear dependence. The former is due to a homogeneous broadening of electron and hole states and the results are in good agreement with theoretical calculations.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Appl. Phys.     The relationship between leader emotional intelligence and psychological climate: An exploratory study

    This study, which was conducted in a clothing manufacturing plant, investigated the relationship between two important constructs for organisations, namely : leader emotional intelligence and psychological climate. A random cluster sample of 600 participants were drawn from a total employee population of 1725 and 297 completed responses were returned for analyses (49,5% response rate). An Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was conducted on both the Swinburne University Emotional Intelligence Test (SUEIT) and the Organisational Climate Questionnaire of Koys and DeCotiis (1991). Both scales were found to be valid and reliable. Stepwise Discriminant analysis provided evidence that a single psychological climate existed in the organisation. The results of a Pearson correlation analysis and Hierarchical Multiple Regression further indicated that leader emotional intelligence is significantly positively related to the psychological climate

    Why lose weight? Reasons for seeking weight loss by overweight but otherwise healthy men

    OBJECTIVE: To identify the reasons for seeking weight loss in overweight or obese but otherwise healthy men. DESIGN: Interviews, prior to intervention, with subjects who had volunteered to participate in a work-site-based weight loss study. SUBJECTS: Ninety-one overweight=obese male workers. Mean age 41, range 18 – 55 y, mean body mass index (BMI) 31.0, range 26.2 – 41.6 kg=m2. MEASUREMENTS: Anthropometric measurements; body weight and height. Body mass index calculated. A short interview using open questions to determine the individuals reason for seeking weight loss. RESULTS: The message that weight loss is beneficial to health for the overweight was recognized by all subjects regardless of BMI, and was reported as the main factor for attempting weight loss. Improved fitness and effects on appearance and well-being were reported half as often as the primary reason for weight loss. CONCLUSION: Overweight lay members of the public have accepted the health education message that weight loss can improve health. Overweight but otherwise healthy men who responded, of their own accord, to an electronic mail message offering help to lose weight did not regard obesity and overweight as primarily a cosmetic issue. This is still, however, important, especially to younger people

    Doping-tunable thermal emission from plasmon polaritons in semiconductor epsilon-near-zero thin films

    We utilize the unique dispersion properties of leaky plasmon polaritons in epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) thin films to demonstrate thermal radiation control. Owing to its highly flat dispersion above the light line, a thermally excited leaky wave at the ENZ frequency out-couples into free space without any scattering structures, resulting in a narrowband, wide-angle, p-polarized thermal emission spectrum. We demonstrate this idea by measuring angle-and polarization-resolved thermal emission spectra from a single layer of unpatterned, doped semiconductors with deep-subwavelength film thickness (d/lambda(0) similar to 6 x 10(-3), where d is the film thickness and lambda(0) is the free space wavelength). We show that this semiconductor ENZ film effectively works as a leaky wave thermal radiation antenna, which generates far-field radiation from a thermally excited mode. The use of semiconductors makes the radiation frequency highly tunable by controlling doping densities and also facilitates device integration with other components. Therefore, this leaky plasmon polariton emission from semiconductor ENZ films provides an avenue for on-chip control of thermal radiation. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLCopen0

    Liquid Oxygen/Liquid Methane Propulsion and Cryogenic Advanced Development

    Exploration Systems Architecture Study conducted by NASA in 2005 identified the liquid oxygen (LOx)/liquid methane (LCH4) propellant combination as a prime candidate for the Crew Exploration Vehicle Service Module propulsion and for later use for ascent stage propulsion of the lunar lander. Both the Crew Exploration Vehicle and Lunar Lander were part the Constellation architecture, which had the objective to provide global sustained lunar human exploration capability. From late 2005 through the end of 2010, NASA and industry matured advanced development designs for many components that could be employed in relatively high thrust, high delta velocity, pressure fed propulsion systems for these two applications. The major investments were in main engines, reaction control engines, and the devices needed for cryogenic fluid management such as screens, propellant management devices, thermodynamic vents, and mass gauges. Engine and thruster developments also included advanced high reliability low mass igniters. Extensive tests were successfully conducted for all of these elements. For the thrusters and engines, testing included sea level and altitude conditions. This advanced development provides a mature technology base for future liquid oxygen/liquid methane pressure fed space propulsion systems.
