Cosmology, Oscillating Physics and Oscilllating Biology
According to recent reports there is an excess correlation and an apparent
regularity in the galaxy one-dimensional polar distribution with a
characteristic scale of 128 Mpc. This aparent spatial periodicity can
be naturally explained by a time oscillation of the gravitational constant .
On the other hand, periodic growth features of bivalve and coral fossiles
appear to show a periodic component in the time dependence of the number of
days per year. In this letter we show that a time oscillating gravitational

Gel-Electrophoresis and Diffusion of Ring-Shaped DNA
A model for the motion of ring-shaped DNA in a gel is introduced and studied
by numerical simulations and a mean-field approximation. The ring motion is
mediated by finger-shaped loops (hernias) that move in an amoeba-like fashion
around the gel obstructions. This constitutes an extension of previous
reptation tube treatments. It is shown that tension is essential for describing
the dynamics in the presence of hernias. It is included in the model as long
range interactions over stretched DNA regions. The mobility of ring-shaped DNA
is found to saturate much as in the well-studied case of linear DNA.
Experiments in polymer gels, however, show that the mobility drops
exponentially with the DNA ring size. This is commonly attributed to
dangling-ends in the gel that can impale the ring. The predictions of the
present model are expected to apply to artificial 2D obstacle arrays (W.D.
Volkmuth, R.H. Austin, Nature 358,600 (1992)) which have no dangling-ends. In
the zero-field case an exact solution of the model steady-state is obtained,
and quantities such as the average ring size are calculated. An approximate
treatment of the ring dynamics is given, and the diffusion coefficient is
derived. The model is also discussed in the context of spontaneous symmetry

Charge conservation and time-varying speed of light
It has been recently claimed that cosmologies with time dependent speed of
light might solve some of the problems of the standard cosmological scenario,
as well as inflationary scenarios. In this letter we show that most of these
models, when analyzed in a consistent way, lead to large violations of charge
conservation. Thus, they are severly constrained by experiment, including those
where is a power of the scale factor and those whose source term is the
trace of the energy-momentum tensor. In addition, early Universe scenarios with
a sudden change of related to baryogenesis are discarded.Comment: 4 page
On-chain electrodynamics of metallic (TMTSF)_2 X salts: Observation of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid response
We have measured the electrodynamic response in the metallic state of three
highly anisotropic conductors, (TMTSF)_2 X, where X=PF_6, AsF_6, or ClO_4, and
TMTSF is the organic molecule tetramethyltetraselenofulvalene. In all three
cases we find dramatic deviations from a simple Drude response. The optical
conductivity has two features: a narrow mode at zero frequency, with a small
spectral weight, and a mode centered around 200 cm^{-1}, with nearly all of the
spectral weight expected for the relevant number of carriers and single
particle bandmass. We argue that these features are characteristic of a nearly
one-dimensional half- or quarter-filled band with Coulomb correlations, and
evaluate the finite energy mode in terms of a one-dimensional Mott insulator.
At high frequencies (\hbar\omega > t_\perp, the transfer integral perpendicular
to the chains), the frequency dependence of the optical conductivity
\sigma_1(\omega) is in agreement with calculations based on an interacting
Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, and is different from what is expected for an
uncorrelated one-dimensional semiconductor. The zero frequency mode shows
deviations from a simple Drude response, and can be adequately described with a

Partial characterization of Ia antigens from murine lymphoid cells
Congenic anti-Ia antisera were used to bind radiolabelled Ia antigens from cells of various strains of mice of known H-2 haplotype. The results indicate that Ia antigens are proteins of molecular weight 30,000 to 35,000 daltons. The Ia antigens are distinct from known H-2 antigens as judged by independent immunoprecipitation as well as by molecular weight. Ia antigens are synthesized by, and are present on the surface of lymphoid cells as evidenced by incorporation studies using 3 H-leucine and enzymatic radioiodination of cells, respectively. Tissue distribution of cell surface Ia suggests that Ia antigens are on B cells. We have searched for a neutral dibaryon decaying via and
. Our search has yielded two candidate events from which we set
an upper limit on the production cross section. Normalizing to the
inclusive production cross section, we find at 90% C.L., for an of mass

Heroes and villains of world history across cultures

Multidimensional scaling and factor analysis techniques found only limited forms of universality in evaluations across Western, Catholic/Orthodox, Muslim, and Asian country clusters. The highest consensus across cultures involved scientific innovators, with Einstein having the most positive evaluation overall. Peaceful humanitarians like Mother Theresa and Gandhi followed. There was much less cross-cultural consistency in the evaluation of negative figures, led by Hitler, Osama bin Laden, and Saddam Hussein. After more traditional empirical methods (e.g., factor analysis) failed to identify meaningful cross-cultural patterns, Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was used to identify four global representational profiles: Secular and Religious Idealists were overwhelmingly prevalent in Christian countries, and Political Realists were common in Muslim and Asian countries.
