Accepting Mortality: Using Dance/Movement Therapy in Nursing Home Care

As the elderly population continues to grow, there is new importance put on changing perceptions of the aging process. Long-term care in the form of nursing homes are seeing a shift in life expectancy as elderly individuals are living well into their eighties and nighties. This brings to light a lot of difficulties for the aging population who are experiencing major physical and cognitive declines. This also shows gaps in nursing home care when looking at the needs of elderly individuals who are facing their mortality. The medicalization of long-term care has put an emphasis on prolonging life, but is not working to help the entire individual, both body and mind. Examining Erikson’s theory provides psychosocial context for the need of holistic care. Self-management practices take Erikson’s work and apply the psychosocial stages to realistic goals for today’s elderly. The challenge is to find an approach that meets the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive needs of this elderly population. Dance/movement therapy (DMT) works as an age-specific discipline that accomplishes the numerous goals the aging elderly have. DMT works to repair the connection of mind and body to help this population find satisfaction in their final days

Using PDSAs to Optimize Surgical Screening

This poster describes a project that used a patient-centered medical home model to improve cervical cancer screening for patients at Duffy Health Center in Hyannis. Lessons learned include: identifying existing opportunities to provide whole-person care may provide revenue enhancement opportunities; practice workflow tools require user input in their development to be accepted and effective; buy-in from all team members is crucial and it is important for the team to agree on the process; and data collection is essential, along with ongoing quality improvement and practice transformation coaching

NF539 Yield Suppressions of Glyphosate-Resistant (Roundup Ready) Soybeans

Research description and results of testing for effect of glyphosate herbicide application and the effect of the glyphosate-resistant gene in soybean production. Glyphosate is a popular postemergence herbicide. Glyphosate-resistant soybean technology is gaining acceptance in Nebraska and in U.S. cropping systems; however, potential yield suppression from either genetic differences among varieties, the glyphosate-resistant gene/gene insertion process, or glyphosate is a concern. The first of these could contribute to a yield lag; the latter two could contribute to a yield drag. Research Goals We designed experiments to test for both elements of yield drag: the effect of glyphosate herbicide application and the effect of the glyphosate-resistant gene. Since we could not distinguish between yield drag associated with the glyphosate-resistant gene or effects of its insertion, reference to this gene in the following could mean either or both of these possibilities. Two experiments were conducted at each of four Nebraska locations for two years with the intent to: 1) investigate the glyphosate herbicide effect on 12-13 varieties; and 2) look at the effect of the glyphosate-resistant (glyphosate-resistant) gene on five pairs of glyphosate- resistant, nonglyphosate-resistant sister cultivars (eight other cultivars were included as checks). Summary: Yield suppressions were observed. Yield drag from glyphosate application was not observed. Yield drag from glyphosate-resistant gene = 5 percent. Vertical integration and firm boundaries : the evidence

Since Ronald H. Coase's (1937) seminal paper, a rich set of theories has been developed that deal with firm boundaries in vertical or input–output structures. In the last twenty-five years, empirical evidence that can shed light on those theories also has been accumulating. We review the findings of empirical studies that have addressed two main interrelated questions: First, what types of transactions are best brought within the firm and, second, what are the consequences of vertical integration decisions for economic outcomes such as prices, quantities, investment, and profits. Throughout, we highlight areas of potential cross-fertilization and promising areas for future work
