Towards an approach to development as mission: the category of personhood as addressed by Amartya Sen?
This paper is concerned with the role of personhood in development. I will be looking
at the extent to which the influential model of development proposed by Amartya Sen
does justice to the category of personhood. I will provide an overview of the work of
Sen in the area of development and then provide some critical engagement. Drawing
from the work of Sen this article provides some pointers or markers towards an
approach to development as missionary role. Bosch's phrase 'creative tension'
provides a key principle for an approach to development.DHE
The Ecumenical Movement and development: The role of personhood
This article is part of several contributions that was presented at the 2015 Southern
African Missiological Society (SAMS). The conference theme was undergirded by
the theme of the World Council of Churches (WCC) assembly in Busan, South Korea
and the recent Encyclical of Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church; 'Together
towards life'. The specific contribution of this article lies with the role of personhood
in development. The question that I seek to address is to what extent the influential
models of development proposed by Korten and more importantly, the ecumenical
movement, can do justice to the category of personhood. A secondary question is
the complex process through which people come to accept responsibility for addressing
their situations.DHE
Practical theology: A critically engaged practical reason approach of practice, theory, practice and theory
Browning's influential use of practical reason for his fundamental practical theology is
analysed. His correlation of theory and practice in his three stages of theory, practice and theory
is also critiqued because his approach reduces practical theology almost to professionalism
and principles for ministry. His approach could also result in an antagonistic relationship
between practice and theory as practice is reduced to theory or academics. This article seeks
to present a critically engaged practical reasoning approach in which theory and practice have
an in-ter-dependent relationship. Practical reason is an activity in which engagement happens
at every stage. For this to happen, theory and practice interact as equal variables that have
a bearing on each other not to reduce the one to the other, but to complement each other in
a lateral hermeneutical process. This process has four stages, unlike Browning's three-stage
correlation. The stages are schematically presented as practice, theory, practice and theory.DHE
The interplay between theology and development: How theology can be related to development in post-modern society
This article attempts to make a contribution to the discourse of missiology by engaging
critically with the much debated studies of theology and development. The two widely
used definitions of development are analysed to point out commonalities and
weaknesses. A theology of relationality is then introduced with reference to the Trinity,
relationships and personhood. Some pointers then emerged to form a more integral
understanding of development. I then make some connections between human and
social development and the Trinity and perichoresis and to point out the missiological
and ecclesiological implications for the mission of the church.DHE
Church’s response to migrants’ quest for identity formation
Migration has received diverse responses from the dominant powers in the political, social
and religious spheres. Assimilation, domination and cohesion are some of the responses to the
integration of people who cross regional and national borders and reside within their new
locations for a considerable period of time. These responses include both positives, which are
largely short-term solutions, with a lot of losses and trauma for the migrants. The reasons for
these kinds of responses lie in the factors that cause and influence migration. Political and
religious conflict, economics, societal factors such as language and culture, health issues such
HIV or AIDS and other pandemics and environmental factors are some of the causes of
migration
Church, narrative, community and identity in times of migration
Migration is perceived by many communities as a threat to national unity, social cohesion, nationality or common identity. This article is an attempt to address the following question: How does or should the church as a narrative community respond to migrants? Within the South African context, xenophobic attacks and protests directed to migrant workers are two of the visible phenomena which seem to suggest that migrants are an important social phenomenon for peaceful co-existence. I will investigate the church as a narrative community and its role towards migrants. The identity of the church is situated within a narrative and the care towards migrants is influenced by this narrated community
Socially just pedagogies and social justice: The intersection of teaching ethics at higher education level and social justice
This article is part of a longer term project between the Department of Religion and Theology at the University of the Western Cape and Umea University in Sweden. At both the institutions the teaching of ethics as a module within social science curricula has been an important focus area. The critical investigation of the growth of the ethics modules in the Department of Religion and Theology addresses questions of the growth in the number of students taking ethics as a module that have been escalated in the last few years. This research seeks to explore social justice as a pedagogy to teach ethics
Youth ministry at the margins and/or centre as space of the other: Reflections on the resolutions of the Anglican dioceses in the Western Cape 2017
Youth within the context of faith-based organisations carry with them certain power relations
and misconstrued connotations. These power relations and connotations can contribute to
alienation and marginalisation. The resolutions taken at the recent synods of the three
dioceses within the Western Cape reflect and identify the areas - both liturgical and
governance - of marginalisation of youth within the Anglican Church in southern Africa. The
resolutions also call on the church governing bodies and the leaders to create safe spaces
for the youth to be a central part of the mission of the church. Areas such as liturgy, training
and formation, contemporary worship and nurturing relationships are identified within
the resolutions. Theological notions of personhood within the Anglican tradition are to be
investigated as possible motivations for more acceptable power relations of the youth and
leaders and governance structures. What implications do such theological formulations have
for the space that the youth occupy within the margins of the church? A critical reflection of
the synod resolutions answers such questions and points to some contours for sense making
of the youth within the margins of the church from a faith-based organisational perspective
Identity formation at the dawn of liturgical inculturation in the Ethiopian Episcopal Church
This article reflects on the impact of the inculturation of liturgy in the Ethiopian Episcopal Church (EEC) on identity formation within the context of African Christianity. In the EEC, the quest for African Christian identity formation is essential in understanding the role of black culture at the advent of the inculturation of liturgy. Inculturation can be viewed as the meeting and interaction of the Christian gospel and local cultures where neither the liturgy nor the cultures are superior than the other. Thus, it is vital to understand the inculturation of liturgy and its implications for African Christian identity in the EEC. There is a need for an official guiding principle or doctrinal and theological position on use of language and instruments associated with ancestor veneration at all levels of the EEC. The aim of this article is to clarify how the transformation of the EEC liturgy shaped the African Christianity’s identity of its members. It also attempts to provide clarification on the use of language, symbols, and instruments associated with traditional healers in the liturgy and how it creates identity confusion within the EEC. Lastly, we discuss some of the limitations in the liturgical inculturation endeavour in the EEC.
Contribution: This article contributes to a wider discourse of Christian identity formation from the perspective of the coming together of Christianity and African culture. It also contributes to the quest of EEC members for being authentic Christians while also being proud Africans. Specifically, it contributes to the EEC’s quest for African identity through the inculturation of liturgy
The missionary role of mainstream Christianity: Towards a narrative paradigm for social integration of minorities in pluralistic post-apartheid South Africa
This article attempts to add to the existing approaches of practical theology and specifically
to the missionary approaches of mainline churches towards immigrants. This is an attempt
to enhance the mission amongst immigrants by critically engaging with the two approaches,
namely: mainstream and margins and pillarization. Notwithstanding the important
contributions that these two approaches make to tolerance, integration and cohesion of
differences I seek to point out some serious limitations of the two approaches. These limitations
include social coercion, co-option, relativism and loss of identity. Considering these limitations
a third approach, the narrative approach, takes serious community, tradition and symbol for
more effective mission amongst immigrants by mainline churches. Social cohesion, a more
realistic reality and integrated communities are some of the consequences of this approach
when doing missionary activities amongst immigrants.DHE
