    A Web application to estimate the climate change effects on agriculture in Thailand

    A Web application was developed to estimate the effects of climate change on agriculture. We chose the northeast and north of Thailand as the target areas of this application, although most countries in the Asian monsoon region are agricultural areas. Northeastern Thailand is a rainfed farming area where rice and drought-tolerant crops are cultivated. Northern Thailand is a mountainous area where several types of vegetables are cultivated. The application identifies and recommends crops that can be grown based on the simulation results of a crop model DSSAT. The DSSAT was executed 365 times; the start date was moved forward one day each time. The effects of climate change were estimated by inputting meteorological data that reflects the influence of climate change. The most favorable start date and the yield are summarized and displayed as output. Application of this system to grid meteorological data required the shortening of execution time and handling a huge volume of data. These problems were solved using multithreading, StAX and Hadoop. The Web application with witch output data were presented was designed based on the assumption that it would be used by a farmer in the field with a 7-inch tablet.</jats:p

The concept of angiogenesis, when proposed by Folksman in 1971, had a great impact on cancer research and therapy, as the survival and proliferation of cancer depend on angiogenesis, which could be a target of cancer therapy. In subsequent decades, numerous antiangiogenic agents were developed, and some of them have been applied clinically. However, angiogenesis includes a complex and multistep process that has not been sufficiently elucidated.     Conceptualizing University Autonomy and Academic Freedom: Reflections on state of Autonomy and Academic Freedom in Public Universities in Kenya

    There has been mixed view on the understanding and implication of the terms university autonomy and academic freedom. Different people have used the terms to imply different things, with academia looking at it as absolute freedom of universities to run their affairs. On the other hand, political leaders have taken these terms as delegated and thus needs to be exercised to enhance society’s social economic value. There is a consensus that university autonomy and academic freedom is a fundamental anchor of universities world over. Differences in conceptualization of these terms have resulted in friction between the political leaders and scholars. This paper therefore aimed at crystalizing the common bases of use and application of the terms with a view of creating a common understanding across the divide in order to reduce the tension. The paper also gives reflections on how the university autonomy and academic freedom has been perceived and applied in Kenya public universities. The debate on university autonomy and academic freedom seem to have evolved overtime and appears to have settled on a common conceptualization world over. The paper observes that, the terms university autonomy and academic freedom implies allowing universities adequate latitude to run their affairs in a way that it optimizes stakeholders’ value

    Triplet Chemotherapy with Cisplatin, Docetaxel, and Irinotecan for Patients with Recurrent or Refractory Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

    We examined the feasibility of triplet chemotherapy using cisplatin, docetaxel, and irinotecan for patients with recurrent or refractory non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), retrospectively. Twenty-five patients (21 men and 4 women) with NSCLC and good performance status who were &#60;70 years old were analyzed. The median age was 58 years. Most patients had performance status 1 (16/25), stage IV disease (18/25) and adenocarcinoma-histology (16/25). Cisplatin and docetaxel were given on day 1 and irinotecan on day 2;the cycle was repeated every 3 weeks. The objective response rate was 39.1% (95% confidence interval:18.7-59.5%). The median survival time and actual 2-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates were 14.3 months, 32%, 20%, and 8%, respectively. Of note, only 6 patients were treated with gefitinib at the recurrence after triplet chemotherapy;of these, 4 (67%) achieved a partial response, which might result in favorable survival. Grade 3/4 toxicities consisted of neutropenia (100%), neutropenic fever (56%), nausea/vomiting (40%), and diarrhea (16%);no cases of treatment-related death occurred. Triplet chemotherapy showed impressive survival data in our clinical trial, but proved too toxic for use in treating patients with NSCLC in the clinical practice.</p

    Trust Model for Social Network using Singular Value Decomposition

    For effective interactions to take place in a social network, trust is important. We model trust of agents using the peer to peer reputation ratings in the network that forms a real valued matrix. Singular value decomposition discounts the reputation ratings to estimate the trust levels as trust is the subjective probability of future expectations based on current reputation ratings. Reputation and trust are closely related and singular value decomposition can estimate trust using the real valued matrix of the reputation ratings of the agents in the network. Singular value decomposition is an ideal technique in error elimination when estimating trust from reputation ratings. Reputation estimation of trust is optimal at the discounting of 20 %

    The Roles of Neuropeptide Y in Respiratory Disease Pathogenesis via the Airway Immune Response

    The lungs are very complex organs, and the respiratory system performs the dual roles of repairing tissue while protecting against infection from various environmental stimuli. Persistent external irritation disrupts the immune responses of tissues and cells in the respiratory system, ultimately leading to respiratory disease. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36-amino-acid polypeptide and a neurotransmitter that regulates homeostasis. The NPY receptor is a seven-transmembrane-domain G-protein-coupled receptor with six subtypes (Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5, and Y6). Of these receptors, Y1, Y2, Y4, and Y5 are functional in humans, and Y1 plays important roles in the immune responses of many organs, including the respiratory system. NPY and the Y1 receptor have critical roles in the pathogenesis of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The effects of NPY on the airway immune response and pathogenesis differ among respiratory diseases.     Is Adenosine Deaminase in Pleural Fluid a Useful Marker for Differentiating Tuberculosis from Lung Cancer or Mesothelioma in Japan, a Country with Intermediate Incidence of Tuberculosis?

    The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of the determination of adenosine deaminase (ADA) level in pleural fluid for the differential diagnosis between tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) and malignant pleural effusion (MPE) in Japan, a country with intermediate incidence of tuberculosis (TB). We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 435 patients with pleural effusion and investigated their pleural ADA levels as determined by an auto analyzer. ROC analysis was also performed. The study included patients with MPE (n=188), TPE (n=124), benign nontuberculous pleural effusion (n=94), and pleural effusion of unknown etiology (n=29). The median ADA level in the TPE group was 70.8U/L, which was significantly higher than that in any other groups (p<0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) in ROC analysis was 0.895. With a cut-off level for ADA of 36U/L, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 85.5%, 86.5%, 69.7%, and 93.6%, respectively. As many as 9% of patients with lung cancer and 15% of those with mesothelioma were false-positive with this ADA cutoff setting. Although the ADA activity in pleural fluid can help in the diagnosis of TPE, it should be noted that some cases of lung cancer or mesothelioma show high ADA activity in geographical regions with intermediate incidence of TB, in contrast to high prevalence areas
