Effects of a sleep hygiene education program on children in a Japanese elementary school

Our objective in this study was to evaluate the effects of a Sleep Hygiene Education Program (SHEP) on sleep quality in students aged 9 to 11 in a Japanese elementary school. In the SHEP we gave a 75-minute lecture to the students. Both before and after the program, we distributed sleep-related questionnaires to 110 students and then collected and analyzed them. Three items concerning sleep quality; \u27Time of going to bed\u27, \u27Feeling upon waking up\u27 and \u27Who wakes you up ?\u27 were statistically analyzed using McNemar\u27s Test. The results showed that there was no significant change in the items \u27Time of going to bed\u27 and \u27Who wakes you up ?\u27 comparing before and after the program. However, the item \u27Feeling upon waking up\u27 showed a significant positive change after the program. These results suggest that SHEP has the potential for improving sleep quality even in young students

Serum thiamine level during the initiation term of hemodialysis

It has been reported that thiamine deficiency is often seen in hemodialysis (HD) patients because of dietary restrictions as well as its loss during dialysis sessions. We studied the serum thiamine level before and after dialysis sessions during the initiation term of HD. Forty CKD patients who hospitalized to newly begin chronic HD were studied. We compared the serum thiamine levels at the first and the last HD sessions in our hospital. The serum thiamine level at the first HD decreased from 25.47±10.07 to 23.55±9.46 ng/ml (before and after HD session, respectively, p<0.05, paired t-test). At the last HD session in our hospital, the serum level of thiamine also decreased from 27.44±11.37 to 25.71±10.80 ng/ml (before and after HD session, respectively, p <0.05). Although water-soluble vitamins such as thiamine are lost during dialysis session, serum thiamine level tended to restore spontaneously during the hospitalization (25.47±10.07 vs. 27.44±11.37, pre HD value, p=0.09). A three months-follow up measurement after initiation of HD, which is now in progress (so far n=3), revealed increase of serum thiamine level in all patients (35.33±7.37 ng/ml). It may reflect the improvement of nutritional status after the initiation of HD, and suggests the loss of thiamine by HD procedure can be covered

Immunobiotic Bifidobacteria Strains Modulate Rotavirus Immune Response in Porcine Intestinal Epitheliocytes via Pattern Recognition Receptor Signaling.

In this work, we aimed to characterize the antiviral response of an originally established porcine intestinal epithelial cell line (PIE cells) by evaluating the molecular innate immune response to rotavirus (RVs). In addition, we aimed to select immunomodulatory bacteria with antiviral capabilities. PIE cells were inoculated with RVs isolated from different host species and the infective titers and the molecular innate immune response were evaluated. In addition, the protection against RVs infection and the modulation of immune response by different lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains was studied. The RVs strains OSU (porcine) and UK (bovine) effectively infected PIE cells. Our results also showed that RVs infection in PIE cells triggered TLR3-, RIG-I- and MDA-5-mediated immune responses with activation of IRF3 and NF-κB, induction of IFN-β and up-regulation of the interferon stimulated genes MxA and RNase L. Among the LAB strains tested, Bifidobacterium infantis MCC12 and B. breve MCC1274 significantly reduced RVs titers in infected PIE cells. The beneficial effects of both bifidobacteria were associated with reduction of A20 expression, and improvements of IRF-3 activation, IFN-β production, and MxA and RNase L expressions. These results indicate the value of PIE cells for studying RVs molecular innate immune response in pigs and for the selection of beneficial bacteria with antiviral capabilities
