Re-Examination of Possible Bimodality of GALLEX Solar Neutrino Data
The histogram formed from published capture-rate measurements for the GALLEX
solar neutrino experiment is bimodal, showing two distinct peaks. On the other
hand, the histogram formed from published measurements derived from the similar
GNO experiment is unimodal, showing only one peak. However, the two experiments
differ in run durations: GALLEX runs are either three weeks or four weeks
(approximately) in duration, whereas GNO runs are all about four weeks in
duration. When we form 3-week and 4-week subsets of the GALLEX data, we find
that the relevant histograms are unimodal. The upper peak arises mainly from
the 3-week runs, and the lower peak from the 4-week runs. The 4-week subset of
the GALLEX dataset is found to be similar to the GNO dataset. A recent
re-analysis of GALLEX data leads to a unimodal histogram.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
Heat kernel coefficients for chiral bag boundary conditions
We study the asymptotic expansion of the smeared L2-trace of fexp(-tP^2)
where P is an operator of Dirac type, f is an auxiliary smooth smearing
function which is used to localize the problem, and chiral bag boundary
conditions are imposed. Special case calculations, functorial methods and the
theory of zeta and eta invariants are used to obtain the boundary part of the
heat-kernel coefficients a1 and a2.Comment: Published in J. Phys. A38, 2259-2276 (2005). Record without file

Holographic Trace Anomaly and Cocycle of Weyl Group
The behavior of the divergent part of the bulk AdS/CFT effective action is considered with respect to the special finite diffeomorphism transformations acting on the boundary as a Weyl transformation of the boundary metric. The resulting 1-cocycle of the Weyl group is in full agreement with the 1-cocycle of the Weyl group obtained from the cohomological consideration of the effective action of the corresponding CFT
Bose-Einstein condensation for interacting scalar fields in curved spacetime
We consider the model of self-interacting complex scalar fields with a rigid
gauge invariance under an arbitrary gauge group . In order to analyze the
phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation finite temperature and the possibility
of a finite background charge is included. Different approaches to derive the
relevant high-temperature behaviour of the theory are presented.Comment: 28 pages, LaTe
GNO Solar Neutrino Observations: Results for GNOI
We report the first GNO solar neutrino results for the measuring period GNOI,
solar exposure time May 20, 1998 till January 12, 2000. In the present
analysis, counting results for solar runs SR1 - SR19 were used till April 4,
2000. With counting completed for all but the last 3 runs (SR17 - SR19), the
GNO I result is [65.8 +10.2 -9.6 (stat.) +3.4 -3.6 (syst.)]SNU (1sigma) or
[65.8 + 10.7 -10.2 (incl. syst.)]SNU (1sigma) with errors combined. This may be
compared to the result for Gallex(I-IV), which is [77.5 +7.6 -7.8 (incl.
syst.)] SNU (1sigma). A combined result from both GNOI and Gallex(I-IV)
together is [74.1 + 6.7 -6.8 (incl. syst.)] SNU (1sigma).Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B, June 2000. PACS: 26.65. +t ; 14.60

Smeared heat-kernel coefficients on the ball and generalized cone
We consider smeared zeta functions and heat-kernel coefficients on the
bounded, generalized cone in arbitrary dimensions. The specific case of a ball
is analysed in detail and used to restrict the form of the heat-kernel
coefficients on smooth manifolds with boundary. Supplemented by conformal
transformation techniques, it is used to provide an effective scheme for the
calculation of the . As an application, the complete coefficient
is given.Comment: 23 pages, JyTe
Precision astrometry of pulsars and other compact radio sources in the globular cluster M15
The globular cluster (GC) M15 (NGC 7078) is host to at least eight pulsars and two low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), one of which is also visible in the radio regime. Here we present the results of a multi-epoch global very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) campaign aiming at i) measuring the proper motion of the known compact radio sources; ii) finding and classifying thus far undetected compact radio sources in the GC; and iii) detecting a signature of the putative intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) proposed to reside at the core of M15. We measure the sky motion in right ascension (µa) and declination (µd) of the pulsars M15A and M15C and of the LMXB AC211 to be (µa,µd)M15A = (-0.54 ± 0.14,-4.33 ± 0.25) mas yr-1, (µa,µd)M15C = (-0.75 ± 0.09,-3.52 ± 0.13) mas yr-1, and (µa, µd)AC211 = (-0.46 ± 0.08,-4.31 ± 0.20) mas yr-1, respectively. Based on these measurements we estimate the global proper motion of M15 to be (µa, µd) = (-0.58 ± 0.18,-4.05 ± 0.34) mas yr -1. We detect two previously known but unclassified compact sources within our field of view. Our observations indicate that one them is of extragalactic origin while the other one is a foreground source, quite likely an LMXB. The double neutron star system M15C became fainter during the observations, disappeared for one year and is now observable again-an effect possibly caused by geodetic precession. The LMXB AC211 shows a double lobed structure in one of the observations indicative of an outburst during this campaign. With the inclusion of the last two of a total of seven observations we confirm the upper mass limit for a putative IMBH to be M•< 500 M·. © 2014 ESO
Kaluza-Klein Pistons with non-Commutative Extra Dimensions
We calculate the scalar Casimir energy and Casimir force for a
Kaluza-Klein piston setup in which the extra dimensional space contains a
non-commutative 2-sphere, . The cases to be studied are and respectively as extra dimensional spaces, with the
dimensional commutative torus. The validity of the results and the
regularization that the piston setup offers are examined in both cases. Finally
we examine the 1-loop corrected Casimir energy for one piston chamber, due to
the self interacting scalar field in the non-commutative geometry. The
computation is done within some approximations. We compare this case for the
same calculation done in Minkowski spacetime . A discussion on the
stabilization of the extra dimensional space within the piston setup follows at
the end of the article.Comment: 22 page
Spectral asymmetry for bag boundary conditions
We give an expression, in terms of boundary spectral functions, for the
spectral asymmetry of the Euclidean Dirac operator in two dimensions, when its
domain is determined by local boundary conditions, and the manifold is of
product type. As an application, we explicitly evaluate the asymmetry in the
case of a finite-length cylinder, and check that the outcome is consistent with
our general result. Finally, we study the asymmetry in a disk, which is a
non-product case, and propose an interpretation.Comment: Some minor changes. To appear in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical

Semiclassical Estimates of Electromagnetic Casimir Self-Energies of Spherical and Cylindrical Metallic Shells
The leading semiclassical estimates of the electromagnetic Casimir stresses
on a spherical and a cylindrical metallic shell are within 1% of the field
theoretical values. The electromagnetic Casimir energy for both geometries is
given by two decoupled massless scalars that satisfy conformally covariant
boundary conditions. Surface contributions vanish for smooth metallic
boundaries and the finite electromagnetic Casimir energy in leading
semiclassical approximation is due to quadratic fluctuations about periodic
rays in the interior of the cavity only. Semiclassically the non-vanishing
Casimir energy of a metallic cylindrical shell is almost entirely due to
Fresnel diffraction.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
