    Charlene J. Sato's "A Nonstandard Approach to Standard English": A Major Contribution to the Field of Sociolinguistics

    In her article, "A nonstandard approach to standard English" (1989), Charlene Sato addresses several issues rerated to the controversy over the use of Hawai'i Creole English (HCE) and standard English (SE) in the crassroom. Opposing an assimilationist perspective and taking a pluralistic position toward language use in society, Sato stresses the importance ofunderstanding the differences between SE and minority, or nonstandard, varieties in legitimizing the educational experience of language minority groups. Sato defends her "nonstandard" approach by showing how a pruralistic perspective can contribute to the school success of minority ranguage students. She bases this view on empirical studies that show minority varieties ofEngrish are different from SE both linguistically and in discourse structure, and thus adjustments in the classroom must be made to accommodate these differences ifchirdren are to be given the opportunity to succeed. Sato also offers suggestions on what teachers can do to contribute toward equal education for minority language speakers. we will summarize Sato,s points and discuss the significance of her article

    Tocopheryl Phosphate Inhibits Rheumatoid Arthritis-Related Gene Expression In Vitro and Ameliorates Arthritic Symptoms in Mice

    Anti-rheumatoid arthritis (RA) effects of α-tocopherol (α-T) have been shown in human patients in a double-blind trial. However, the effects of α-T and its derivatives on fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) during the pathogenesis of RA remain unclear. In the present study, we compared the expression levels of genes related to RA progression in FLS treated with α-T, succinic ester of α-T (TS), and phosphate ester of α-T (TP), as determined via RT-PCR. The mRNA levels of interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3, and MMP-13 were reduced by treatment with TP without cytotoxicity, while α-T and TS did not show such effects. Furthermore, intraperitoneal injection of TP ameliorated the edema of the foot and joint and improved the arthritis score in laminarin-induced RA model mice. Therefore, TP exerted anti-RA effects through by inhibiting RA-related gene expression

    An alternative respiratory pathway on Candida krusei : implications on susceptibility profile and oxidative stress

    Our aim was to detect the presence of an alternative oxidase (AOX) in Candida krusei clinical strains and its influence on fluconazole susceptibility and in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Candida krusei clinical isolates were tested to evaluate the presence of AOX. Debaromyces hansenii 2968 (AOX positive) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae BY4742 (AOX negative) were used as control strains. Measurements of oxygen consumption were performed in the presence of 1 mM KCN, an inhibitor of the classical respiratory chain, and 5 mM salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM). AOX expression was monitored by Western blotting using an AOX monoclonal antibody. Interactions between fluconazole and SHAM were performed using checkerboard assay. ROS production was evaluated in the presence of SHAM plus fluconazole, H2O2, menadione, or plumbagin. AOX was present in all C. krusei tested. The combination of fluconazole with SHAM resulted in an indifferent effect. In the presence of SHAM, the treatment with ROS inductors or fluconazole increased ROS production, except in the AOX-negative strain. An alternative respiratory pathway resistant to cyanide is described for the first time as a characteristic of C. krusei species. This AOX is unrelated to fluconazole resistance; however, it protects C. krusei from oxidative stress.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia - SFRH/BD/27662/200
