Tackling bullying with technology:a literature review of existing bullying prevention solutions

    Get PDF
Abstract. Bullying is a serious problem that affects people all around the world, particularly children. The consequences of bullying are so severe that the issue cannot be set aside. There are multiple ways to tackle bullying, and in recent years technology has been brought up as a possible solution. There are different kinds of technological solutions that have different points-of-view to the issue and on how to solve it. The research method applied in this thesis was a literature review of the technological solutions that have been developed to battle bullying. The purpose of the study was to examine and describe the existing bullying prevention technologies and their distinctive features. Two databases were used to gain material for this study, and through very strict exclusion criteria and several analyses from over 2000 search results, 15 articles were included in this study. Bullying and cyberbullying as concepts are explained. The study results pointed out four groups of possible solutions to bullying: Serious Games, anti-bullying apps, bullying detecting algorithms, and solutions that combine more than one type of technology as well as one group for cyberbullying. These groups are presented with suitable examples and their identified distinctive characteristics

A White Paper on the status and needs of salmonoid aquaculture in the North Central Region

    Get PDF
Salmonids are grown in many states in the North Central Region (NCR) with a major emphasis on rainbow trout production. The North Central Regional Aquaculture Center (NCRAC) Industry Advisory Council (IAC) designated salmonids as a high priority area and research on salmonids has been supported by NCRAC since 1990. Recently concern was raised over the long-term focus of NCRAC funded research and extension activities and at the June 1999 NCRAC Board of Directors (Board) meeting, it was decided that additional white papers should be developed to help strengthen various focus areas. As a result, the Board determined that one of these white papers should be on salmonids. This white paper reviews the current status of the salmonid industry, addresses critical limiting factors and research/outreach needs, and gives recommendations for future research/extension priorities. It should be viewed as a “living document” and updated periodically as new developments occur

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to W+W- production via vector-boson fusion

Vector-boson fusion processes constitute an important class of reactions at hadron colliders, both for signals and backgrounds of new physics in the electroweak interactions. We consider what is commonly referred to as W+W- production via vector-boson fusion (with subsequent leptonic decay of the Ws), or, more precisely, e+ nu_e mu- nubar_mu + 2 jets production in proton-proton scattering, with all resonant and non-resonant Feynman diagrams and spin correlations of the final-state leptons included, in the phase-space regions which are dominated by t-channel electroweak-boson exchange. We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to this process, at order alpha^6 alpha_s. The QCD corrections are modest, changing total cross sections by less than 10%. Remaining scale uncertainties are below 2%. A fully-flexible next-to-leading order partonic Monte Carlo program allows to demonstrate these features for cross sections within typical vector-boson-fusion acceptance cuts. Modest corrections are also found for distributions.Comment: 29 pages, 14 figure

Riesz potentials and nonlinear parabolic equations

The spatial gradient of solutions to nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations can be pointwise estimated by the caloric Riesz potential of the right hand side datum, exactly as in the case of the heat equation. Heat kernels type estimates persist in the nonlinear cas

Deep Generative Variational Autoencoding for Replay Spoof Detection in Automatic Speaker Verification

Automatic speaker verification (ASV) systems are highly vulnerable to presentation attacks, also called spoofing attacks. Replay is among the simplest attacks to mount - yet difficult to detect reliably. The generalization failure of spoofing countermeasures (CMs) has driven the community to study various alternative deep learning CMs. The majority of them are supervised approaches that learn a human-spoof discriminator. In this paper, we advocate a different, deep generative approach that leverages from powerful unsupervised manifold learning in classification. The potential benefits include the possibility to sample new data, and to obtain insights to the latent features of genuine and spoofed speech. To this end, we propose to use variational autoencoders (VAEs) as an alternative backend for replay attack detection, via three alternative models that differ in their class-conditioning. The first one, similar to the use of Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) in spoof detection, is to train independently two VAEs - one for each class. The second one is to train a single conditional model (C-VAE) by injecting a one-hot class label vector to the encoder and decoder networks. Our final proposal integrates an auxiliary classifier to guide the learning of the latent space. Our experimental results using constant-Q cepstral coefficient (CQCC) features on the ASVspoof 2017 and 2019 physical access subtask datasets indicate that the C-VAE offers substantial improvement in comparison to training two separate VAEs for each class. On the 2019 dataset, the C-VAE outperforms the VAE and the baseline GMM by an absolute 9-10% in both equal error rate (EER) and tandem detection cost function (t-DCF) metrics. Finally, we propose VAE residuals --- the absolute difference of the original input and the reconstruction as features for spoofing detection. The proposed frontend approach augmented with a convolutional neural network classifier demonstrated substantial improvement over the VAE backend use case

To model the economics impacts of population ageing in high-income countrie by estimating the scale of required technological change. Presentation of a over-lapping generations computable general equilibrium model. Population ageing is associated with low growth and large welfare losses. The scale of technological change needed to compensate for this is very large in historical terms
