    Stress-dependent local oxidation of silicon

    The two-dimensional isolation oxidation of silicon is considered for stress-dependent reaction and diffusion coefficients. The influence of such parameters is investigated numerically and asymptotically in the bird's beak problem and for curved geometries arising in the oxidation of cylindrical and spherical structures. In the bird's beak problem, the limit of large activation volume is described for a stress-dependent reaction coefficient, illustrating the significant growth retardation of the silicon/silicon oxide interface and reduced stresses in the silicon oxide. Novel high-order nonlinear evolution-type PDEs are derived and investigated using asymptotic and numerical techniques

    A Standard Input Format for Computer Codes Which Solve Stochastic Programs with Recourse and a Library of Utilities to Simplify its Use

    We explain our suggestions for standardizing input formats for computer codes which solve stochastic programs with recourse. The main reason to set some conventions is to allow programs implementing different methods of solution to be used interchangeably. The general philosophy behind our design is a) to remain fairly faithful to the de facto standard for the statement of LP problems established by IBM for use with MPSX and subsequently adopted by the authors of MINOS, b) to provide sufficient flexibility so that a variety of problems may be expressed in the standard format, c) to allow problems originally formulated as deterministic LP to be converted to stochastic problems with a minimum of effort, d) to permit new options to be added as the need arises, and e) to provide some routines to facilitate the task of reading files specified in the standard format

    Mobile radio propagation prediction using ray tracing methods

    The basic problem is to solve the two-dimensional scalar Helmholtz equation for a point source (the antenna) situated in the vicinity of an array of scatterers (such as the houses and any other relevant objects in 1 square km of urban environment). The wavelength is a few centimeters and the houses a few metres across, so there are three disparate length scales in the problem. The question posed by BT concerned ray counting on the assumptions that: (i) rays were subject to a reflection coefficient of about 0.5 when bouncing off a house wall and (ii) that diffraction at corners reduced their energy by 90%. The quantity of particular interest was the number of rays that need to be accounted for at any particular point in order for those neglected to only contribute 10% of the field at that point; a secondary question concerned the use of rays to predict regions where the field was less than 1% of that in the region directly illuminated by the antenna. The progress made in answering these two questions is described in the next two sections and possibly useful representations of the solution of the Helmholtz equations in terms other than rays are given in the final section

    A Standard Input Format for Multiperiod Stochastic Linear Programs

    Data conventions for the automatic input of multiperiod stochastic linear programs are described. The input format is based on the MPSX standard and is designed to promote the efficient conversion of originally deterministic problems by introducing stochastic variants in separate files. A flexible "header" syntax generates a useful variety of stochastic dependencies. An extension using the NETGEN format is proposed for stochastic network programs

    Understanding how species assemble into communities is a key goal in ecology. However, assembly rules are rarely tested experimentally, and their ability to shape real communities is poorly known. We surveyed a diverse community of epiphyte-dwelling ants and found that similar-sized species co-occurred less often than expected. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that invasion was discouraged by the presence of similarly sized resident species. The size difference for which invasion was less likely was the same as that for which wild species exhibited reduced co-occurrence. Finally we explored whether our experimentally derived assembly rules could simulate realistic communities. Communities simulated using size-based species assembly exhibited diversities closer to wild communities than those simulated using size-independent assembly, with results being sensitive to the combination of rules employed.     The land resource assessment was undertaken from July 1989 to June 1990 by the Natural Resources Institute (NRI) of the Overseas Development Administration (ODA), assisted by Mr. A. C. S. Wright, and Dr. M. Holder of Central Farm. The main object of the survey was to produce an updated land suitability assessment of Orange Walk, Corozal, Belize and Cayo districts which had not already been surveyed by Jenkin et al. (1976) and King et al. (1989). In addition, this survey would provide a land suitability assessment for the Belize Valley based on the soil mapping of )en kin et al. Thus, together with the land resource assessments of Toledo and Stann Creek districts (King et al., 1986, 1989 respectively), a land suitability assessment for the whole of Belize is now available

    This paper discusses how psychoanalytic ideas were brought to bear in the Allied struggle against the Third Reich and explores some of the claims that were made about this endeavour. It shows how a variety of studies of Fascist psychopathology, centred on the concept of superego, were mobilized in military intelligence, post-war planning and policy recommendations for ‘denazification’. Freud's ideas were sometimes championed by particular army doctors and government planners; at other times they were combined with, or displaced by, competing, psychiatric and psychological forms of treatment and diverse studies of the Fascist ‘personality’. This is illustrated through a discussion of the treatment and interpretation of the deputy leader of the Nazi Party, Rudolf Hess, after his arrival in Britain in 1941

    Constraints on Supersymmetric Flavour Models from b->s gamma

    We consider the effects of departures from minimal flavour violations (MFV) in the context of CMSSM-like theories. Second and third generation off-diagonal elements in the Yukawa, sfermion, and trilinear mass matrices are taken to be non-zero at the GUT scale. These are run down together with MSSM parameters to the electroweak scale. We apply constraints from fermion masses and CKM matrix elements to limit the range of the new free parameters of the model. We determine the effect of the departure from MFV on the branching ratio of b->s gamma. We find that only when the expansion parameter in the down-squark sector is relatively large there is a noticeable effect, which tends to relax the lower limit from b->s gamma on the universal gaugino mass. We also find that the expansion parameter associated with the slepton sector needs to be smaller than the corresponding parameter in the down-squark sector in order to be compliant with the bound imposed by the branching ratio of tau-> mu gamma.Comment: Comments: 43 pages, 14 figures.     Oscillatory wave fronts in chains of coupled nonlinear oscillators

    Wave front pinning and propagation in damped chains of coupled oscillators are studied. There are two important thresholds for an applied constant stress FF: for F<Fcd|F|<F_{cd} (dynamic Peierls stress), wave fronts fail to propagate, for Fcd<F<FcsF_{cd} < |F| < F_{cs} stable static and moving wave fronts coexist, and for F>Fcs|F| > F_{cs} (static Peierls stress) there are only stable moving wave fronts. For piecewise linear models, extending an exact method of Atkinson and Cabrera's to chains with damped dynamics corroborates this description. For smooth nonlinearities, an approximate analytical description is found by means of the active point theory. Generically for small or zero damping, stable wave front profiles are non-monotone and become wavy (oscillatory) in one of their tails.Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures, 2 column revtex.
