    Detecting Malicious Code by Model Checking

    Abstract. The ease of compiling malicious code from source code in higher programming languages has increased the volatility of malicious programs: The first appearance of a new worm in the wild is usually followed by modified versions in quick succession. As demonstrated by Christodorescu and Jha, however, classical detection software relies on static patterns, and is easily outsmarted. In this paper, we present a flexible method to detect malicious code patterns in executables by model checking. While model checking was originally developed to verify the correctness of systems against specifications, we argue that it lends itself equally well to the specification of malicious code patterns. To this end, we introduce the specification language CTPL (Computation Tree Predicate Logic) which extends the well-known logic CTL, and describe an efficient model checking algorithm. Our practical experiments demonstrate that we are able to detect a large number of worm variants with a single specification. Key words: Model Checking, Malware Detection.

    Manufacture of Regularly Shaped Sol-Gel Pellets

    An extrusion batch process for manufacturing regularly shaped sol-gel pellets has been devised as an improved alternative to a spray process that yields irregularly shaped pellets. The aspect ratio of regularly shaped pellets can be controlled more easily, while regularly shaped pellets pack more efficiently. In the extrusion process, a wet gel is pushed out of a mold and chopped repetitively into short, cylindrical pieces as it emerges from the mold. The pieces are collected and can be either (1) dried at ambient pressure to xerogel, (2) solvent exchanged and dried under ambient pressure to ambigels, or (3) supercritically dried to aerogel. Advantageously, the extruded pellets can be dropped directly in a cross-linking bath, where they develop a conformal polymer coating around the skeletal framework of the wet gel via reaction with the cross linker.     Impact of Node Ablation on the Morphogenesis of the Body Axis and the Lateral Asymmetry of the Mouse Embryo during Early Organogenesis

    AbstractThe node of the mouse gastrula is the major source of the progenitor cells of the notochord, the floor plate, and the gut endoderm. The node may also play a morphogenetic role since it can induce a partial body axis following heterotopic transplantation. The impact of losing these progenitor cells and the morphogenetic activity on the development of the body axes was studied by the ablation of the node at late gastrulation. In the ablated embryo, an apparently intact anterior–posterior body axis with morphologically normal head folds, neural tube, and primitive streak developed during early organogenesis. Cell fate analysis revealed that the loss of the node elicits de novo recruitment of neural ectoderm and somitic mesoderm from the surrounding germ-layer tissues. This leads to the restoration of the neural tube and the paraxial mesoderm. However, the body axis of the embryo was foreshortened and somite formation was retarded. Histological and gene expression studies reveal that in most of the node-ablated embryos, the notochord in the trunk was either absent or interrupted, and the floor plate was absent in the ventral region of the reconstituted neural tube. The loss of the node did not affect the differentiation of the gut endoderm or the formation of the mid- and hindgut. In the node-ablated embryo, expression of the Pitx2 gene in the lateral plate mesoderm was no longer restricted to the left side but was found on both sides of the body or was completely absent from the lateral plate mesoderm. Therefore, the loss of the node results in the failure to delineate the laterality of the body axis. The node and its derivatives therefore play a critical role in the patterning of the ventral neural tube and lateral body axis but not of the anterior–posterior axis during early organogenesis

    Overview of Boundary Layer Transition Research in Support of Orbiter Return To Flight

    A predictive tool for estimating the onset of boundary layer transition resulting from damage to and/or repair of the thermal protection system was developed in support of Shuttle Return to Flight. The boundary layer transition tool is part of a suite of tools that analyze the aerothermodynamic environment to the local thermal protection system to allow informed disposition of damage for making recommendations to fly as is or to repair. Using mission specific trajectory information and details of each damage site or repair, the expected time (and thus Mach number) at transition onset is predicted to help define the aerothermodynamic environment to use in the subsequent thermal and stress analysis of the local thermal protection system and structure. The boundary layer transition criteria utilized for the tool was developed from ground-based measurements to account for the effect of both protuberances and cavities and has been calibrated against select flight data. Computed local boundary layer edge conditions were used to correlate the results, specifically the momentum thickness Reynolds number over the edge Mach number and the boundary layer thickness. For the initial Return to Flight mission, STS-114, empirical curve coefficients of 27, 100, and 900 were selected to predict transition onset for protuberances based on height, and cavities based on depth and length, respectively

    Using Verification Technology to Specify and Detect Malware

    Computer viruses and worms are major threats for our computer infrastructure, and thus, for economy and society at large. Recent work has demonstrated that a model checking based approach to malware detection can capture the semantics of security exploits more accurately than traditional approaches, and consequently achieve higher detection rates. In this approach, malicious behavior is formalized using the expressive specification language CTPL based on classic CTL. This paper gives an overview of our toolchain for malware detection and presents our new system for computer assisted generation of malicious code specifications
