Dependencies between Work Activities, Technical Artifacts, Space, and Work Organisation: Flexibility issues

    Get PDF
In order to better understand the role of a computer application in organizational setting, we propose a conceptual framework. The framework focuses on four different aspects of an organization—work activities, technical artifacts, space, and work organization— while at the same time addressing the dependencies between these elements. An additional concern is not only to uncover the dependencies of one element on another, but also to understand how the flexibility of one element affects the other elements. The applicability of the framework is demonstrated by analysing a specific organization, the radiology department at a hospi

Small Changes: Using Workshops for Giving Participants a Voice

    Get PDF
While technological change is often occurring at what appears to be a rapid pace, the pace at which technology is absorbed into an organization is, in fact, quite slow. This paper discusses the need for patience in accepting and preparing for organizational change. Specifically it discusses the authors' experiences in a project where many types of workshops were used to help foster an environment where the participants could find ways to express their needs for new computer support

Unfolding participation over time: temporal lenses in participatory design

    Get PDF
Participatory design (PD) research has historically strongly focused on the reporting of design events (e.g. workshops and prototyping activities with participants), where issues such as ‘involving users’, including the users’ point of view, and participation as a matter of mutual learning have been in the foreground. The need to further problematise and critically examine participation is nonetheless apparent. This special issue aims to shed light on participation as it unfolds over time during, between and beyond participatory events such as these. Here, we build an overview of existing directions taken by researchers to address the unfolding of participation in IT design over time. We do this by examining existing PD literature and the four contributions to this special issue. We identify two common temporalities in PD, the future-oriented and the project-based, and propose five lenses that may aid researchers in exploring and understanding the temporal dimensions of participation in their projects: the phasic, emergent, retrospective, prospective and longterm lenses. We end with propositions and opportunities for future research directions in PD, highlighting the multi-faceted nature of the temporality of participation

Unfolding Participation. What do we mean by participation – conceptually and in practice

    Get PDF
The aim of the Unfolding Participation workshop is to outline an agenda for the next 10 years of participatory design (PD) and participatory human computer interaction (HCI) research. We will do that through a double strategy: 1) by critically interrogating the concept of participation (unfolding the concept itself), while at the same time, 2) reflecting on the way that participation unfolds across different participatory configurations. We invite researchers and practitioners from PD and HCI and fields in which information technology mediated participation is embedded (e.g. in political studies, urban planning, participatory arts, business, science and technology studies) to bring a plurality of perspectives and expertise related to participation.

How participatory design works:mechanisms and effects

    Get PDF
We argue that the distinguishing features of Participatory Design are not the participatory activities as such but the mechanisms used, the effects produced and the way in which these are sustained. We use program theory to illuminate how participatory design works and how it may be understood as more than a collection of methods or a matter of configuring user participation. Program theory operates by formulating the causal relations between the planned inputs, the process and the effects in terms of output, outcome and impact. While participatory design might appear similar to co-design or user-centered design on the level of design activities, PD differs in terms of the mechanisms employed and how effects and their sustainment are conceived. Looking at participatory design through the lens of program theory highlights how particular mechanisms work towards not only the designed product but also towards generating gains and lasting effects for participants

Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis are chronic inflammatory rheumatism each involving more than one person in 2000 in France. The placing on the market of immunotherapy has revolutionized their care from the 2000s, greatly improving the patients quality of life and obtains remission of the disease for some of them. This thesis studies in the Department of Rheumatology, Le Mans Hospital from the 01/01/12 to 03/31/12: incidence and prevalence of immunotherapies in the study s sample, then causes of temporary and permanent cessation of with immunotherapy, the proper use contract of these medications and finally therapeutic strategy when changing immunotherapy.ANGERS-BU Médecine-Pharmacie (490072105) / SudocSudocFranceF

Morphino: A nature-inspired tool for the design of shape-changing interfaces

    Get PDF
The HCI community has a strong and growing interest in shape-changing interfaces (SCIs) that can offer dynamic af- fordance. In this context, there is an increasing need for HCI researchers and designers to form close relationships with dis- ciplines such as robotics and material science in order to be able to truly harness the state-of-the-art in morphing technolo- gies. To help these synergies arise, we present Morphino: a card-based toolkit to inspire shape-changing interface designs. Our cards bring together a collection of morphing mechanisms already established in the multidisciplinary literature and illustrate them through familiar examples from nature. We begin by detailing the design of the cards, based on a review of shape-change in nature; then, report on a series of design sessions conducted to demonstrate their usefulness in generating new ideas and in helping end-users gain a better understanding of the possibilities for shape-changing materials
