    Recent Advances in Unconventional Lithography for Challenging 3D Hierarchical Structures and Their Applications

    In nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanofabrication is critical. Among the required processes for nanofabrication, lithography is one of core issues. Although conventional photolithography with recent remarkable improvement has contributed to the industry during the past few decades, fabrication of 3-dimensional (3D) nanostructure is still challenging. In this review, we summarize recent advances for the construction of 3D nanostructures by unconventional lithography and the combination of two top-down approaches or top-down and bottom-up approaches. We believe that the 3D hierarchical nanostructures described here will have a broad range of applications having adaptable levels of functional integration of precisely controlled nanoarchitectures that are required by not only academia, but also industry

    Construct Validity For the Self-Reported Competency and Sub-Construct associated Characteristics of Romanian Physicians in autism Spectrum Disorder

    BACKGROUND: Lack of physicians\u27 knowledge regarding mental health, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) could have adverse effects on affected individuals\u27 health and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to provide construct validity for a modified questionnaire in order to determine the self-reported competency for underlying sub-constructs in ASD, make inferences on perceived competence in ASD based on a sample of Romanian physicians, and identify physicians\u27 characteristics associated with these sub-domains of competency. METHODS: For this survey, we modified a questionnaire that was used in Pakistan and Turkey, and administered it to a sample of 383 practicing physicians in Romania to assess their perceived competency regarding ASD. Exploratory factor analysis on 12 knowledge questions revealed five sub-domains: stigma, potential causes, children\u27s behavior, misconceptions, and educational needs associated with ASD knowledge. Using General Linear Models, we determined physicians\u27 characteristics that predict the total competency score and various competency sub-scores. RESULTS: Seventy-five percent of the responding physicians were female and 30% had over 30 years practicing medicine. The majority (73-94%) of physicians have correctly responded to some basic questions regarding knowledge about ASD. We also found that younger physicians were more knowledgeable about potential causes of ASD than older physicians (Adjusted Mean Score (AMS): 2.90 vs. 2.18, P \u3c 0.01), while older physicians knew more about the behavior of children with ASD (AMS: 0.64 vs. 0.37, P = 0.02). We found a significant interaction (P \u3c 0.01) between television as source of ASD knowledge and city where the clinic is located in relation to knowledge of the physicians regarding stigma related to ASD. However, the total score was not associated with the variables associated with sub-domains. CONCLUSION: Using factor analysis, we demonstrated construct validity of five sub-domains related to Romanian physicians\u27 knowledge about ASD that include stigma, potential causes, behavior in ASD children, special education needs, and misconceptions related to ASD. The lack of significant association of the knowledge of physicians on ASD neither with the Psychiatry nor the Pediatric ward rotations at medical school may support the need for improving the curriculum on ASD in Romanian medical schools

    Concentrations of lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, manganese, and aluminum in the blood of Pakistani children with and without autism spectrum disorder and their associated factors

    Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with early onset in utero or childhood. Environmental exposure to six metals (Pb, Hg, As, Cd, Mn, Al) is believed to be associated with ASD directly or interactively with genes. Objective: To assess the association of ASD among Pakistani children with the six metals and genotype frequencies of three GST genes (GSTP1, GSTM1, GSTT1).Methods: We enrolled 30 ASD cases, age 2-12 years old, and 30 age- and sex-matched typically developing (TD) controls in Karachi, Pakistan. We assessed associations of ASD status with various factors using Conditional Logistic Regression models. We also used General Linear Models to assess possible interaction of blood Mn and Pb concentrations with the three GST genes in relation to ASD status.Results: The unadjusted difference between ASD and TD groups in terms of geometric mean blood Pb concentrations was marginally significant (p = 0.05), but for Al concentrations, the adjusted difference was marginally significant (p = 0.06).Conclusions: This is the first study reporting six blood metal concentrations of Pakistani children with ASD. Estimates provided for possible interactions of GST genes with Mn and Pb in relation to ASD status are valuable for designing future similar studies

    Sparked Reduced Graphene Oxide for Low-Temperature Sodium Beta Alumina Batteries

    Wetting Na metal on the solid electrolyte of a liquid Na battery determines the operating temperature and performance of the battery. At low temperatures below 200 degrees C, liquid Na wets poorly on a solid electrolyte near its melting temperature (T-m = 98 degrees C), limiting its suitability for use in low-temperature batteries used for large-scale energy-storage systems. Herein, we propose the use of sparked reduced graphene oxide (rGO) that can improve the Na wetting in sodium-beta alumina batteries (NBBs), allowing operation at lower temperatures. Experimental and computational studies indicated rGO layers with nanogaps exhibited complete liquid Na wetting regardless of the surface energy between the liquid Na and the graphene oxide, which originated from the capillary force in the gap. Employing sparked rGO significantly enhanced the cell performance at 175 degrees C; the cell retained almost 100% Coulombic efficiency after the initial cycle, which is a substantial improvement over cells without sparked rGO. These results suggest that coating sparked rGO is a promising but simple strategy for the development of low-temperature NBBs. © 2019 American Chemical Society11sciescopu

    Confucian Identification, Ancestral Beliefs, and Ancestral Rituals in Korea

    Since Koreans do not consider Confucianism to be part of religion, conventional religious identification questions cannot accurately capture the number of Confucians in Korea. Using the Korean General Social Survey and other data sources, we aim to describe the identification, beliefs, and practices related to Confucianism, especially ancestral rituals, and to examine whether these beliefs and practices differ across religious groups. Contrasted with 0.2% of the adult population identifying their religion as Confucianism in the 2015 Korean Census, 51% considered themselves as Confucians when asked, “(Regardless of your religious affiliation) do you consider yourself a Confucian?” If we consider those who think that rites for deceased family members are Confucian, the proportion was 44%. Considering those who conduct ancestral rites at a gravesite as Confucians, the proportion was 86%, but was only 70% when we count those who perform ancestral rites at home as Confucians. We also found substantial differences among religious groups. In general, Buddhists were most likely and Protestants were least likely to identify with Confucianism, believe in the power of ancestors, and perform ancestral rites. Perhaps most telling is the result of religious none falling in the middle between Buddhists and Protestants in terms of identification, beliefs, and rituals of Confucianism. The differences of religious groups appear to reflect religious syncretism and the exclusivity of religion. It is overstating to declare a revival of Confucianism, but it is reasonable to say that Confucianism is not a dying tradition in Korean society

    Designs and processes toward high-aspect-ratio nanostructures at the deep nanoscale: Unconventional nanolithography and its applications

    The patterning of high-resolution-featured deep-nanoscale structures with a high aspect ratio (AR) has received increasing attention in recent years as a promising technique for a wide range of applications, including electrical, optical, mechanical and biological systems. Despite extensive efforts to develop viable nanostructure fabrication processes, a superior technique enabling defect-free, high-resolution control over a large area is still required. In this review, we focus on recent important advances in the designs and processes of high-resolution nanostructures possessing a high AR, including hierarchical and 3D patterns.     Peripheral target identification performance modulates eye movements

    We often shift our eyes to an interesting stimulus, but it is important to inhibit that eye movement in some environments (e.g., a no-look pass in basketball). Here, we investigated participants’ ability to inhibit eye movements when they had to process a peripheral target with a requirement to maintain strict fixation. An array of eight letters composed of four characters was briefly presented and a directional cue was centrally presented to indicate the target location. The stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between the cue and the stimulus array was chosen from six values, consisting of pre-cue conditions (−400 and −200 ms), a simultaneous cue condition (0 ms), and post-cue conditions (200, 400, and 800 ms). We found the following: 1) participants shifted their eyes toward the cued location even though the stimulus array was absent at the onset of eye movements, but the eye movement amplitude was smaller than the actual location of the target; 2) eye movements occurred approximately 150 ms after the onset of stimulus array in the pre-cue conditions and 250 ms after cue onset in the simultaneous and post-cue conditions; and 3) eye movement onsets were delayed and their amplitudes were smaller in correct trials than incorrect trials. These results indicate that the inhibitory process controlling eye movements also compete for cognitive resources like other cognitive processes. © 2017 Elsevier Lt101sciescopu

    Surface energy-tunable iso decyl acrylate based molds for low pressure-nanoimprint lithography

    We presented surface energy-tunable nanoscale molds for unconventional lithography. The mold is highly robust, transparent, has a minimized haze, does not contain additives, and is a non-fluorinated isodecyl acrylate and trimethylolpropane triacrylate based polymer. By changing the mixing ratio of the polymer components, the cross-linking density, mechanical modulus, and surface energy (crucial factors in low pressure ((1-2) x 10(5) N m(-2)) low pressure-nanoimprint lithography (LP-NIL)), can be controlled. To verify these properties of the molds, we also characterized the surface energy by measuring the contact angles and calculating the work of adhesion among the wafer, polymer film, and mold for successful demolding in nanoscale structures. Moreover, the molds showed high optical clarity and precisely tunable mechanical and surface properties, capable of replicating sub-100 nm patterns by thermal LP-NIL and UV-NIL. © 2017 IOP Publishing Ltd Printed in the UK
