    Quantitative agreement of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions for domain-wall motion and spin-wave propagation

    The magnetic exchange interaction is the one of the key factors governing the basic characteristics of magnetic systems. Unlike the symmetric nature of the Heisenberg exchange interaction, the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) generates an antisymmetric exchange interaction which offers challenging opportunities in spintronics with intriguing antisymmetric phenomena. The role of the DMI, however, is still being debated, largely because distinct strengths of DMI have been measured for different magnetic objects, particularly chiral magnetic domain walls (DWs) and non-reciprocal spin waves (SWs). In this paper, we show that, after careful data analysis, both the DWs and SWs experience the same strength of DMI. This was confirmed by spin-torque efficiency measurement for the DWs, and Brillouin light scattering measurement for the SWs. This observation, therefore, indicates the unique role of the DMI on the magnetic DW and SW dynamics and also guarantees the compatibility of several DMI-measurement schemes recently proposed.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

    Integrative analysis of plasma and substantia nigra in Parkinson’s disease: unraveling biomarkers and insights from the lncRNA–miRNA–mRNA ceRNA network

    IntroductionParkinson’s disease (PD) is a rapidly growing neurological disorder characterized by diverse movement symptoms. However, the underlying causes have not been clearly identified, and accurate diagnosis is challenging. This study aimed to identify potential biomarkers suitable for PD diagnosis and present an integrative perspective on the disease.MethodsWe screened the GSE7621, GSE8397-GPL96, GSE8397-GPL97, GSE20163, and GSE20164 datasets in the NCBI GEO database to identify differentially expressed (DE) mRNAs in the substantia nigra (SN). We also screened the GSE160299 dataset from the NCBI GEO database to identify DE lncRNAs and miRNAs in plasma. We then constructed 2 lncRNA–miRNA–mRNA competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory networks based on the ceRNA hypothesis. To understand the biological function, we performed Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway and Gene Ontology analyses for each ceRNA network. The receiver operating characteristic analyses (ROC) was used to assess ceRNA results.ResultsWe identified 7 upregulated and 29 downregulated mRNAs as common DE mRNAs in the 5 SN datasets. In the blood dataset, we identified 31 DE miRNAs (9 upregulated and 22 downregulated) and 332 DE lncRNAs (69 upregulated and 263 downregulated). Based on the determined interactions, 5 genes (P2RX7, HSPA1, SLCO4A1, RAD52, and SIRT4) appeared to be upregulated as a result of 10 lncRNAs sponging 4 miRNAs (miR-411, miR-1193, miR-301b, and miR-514a-2/3). Competing with 9 genes (ANK1, CBLN1, RGS4, SLC6A3, SYNGR3, VSNL1, DDC, KCNJ6, and SV2C) for miR-671, a total of 26 lncRNAs seemed to function as ceRNAs, influencing genes to be downregulated.DiscussionIn this study, we successfully constructed 2 novel ceRNA regulatory networks in patients with PD, including 36 lncRNAs, 5 miRNAs, and 14 mRNAs. Our results suggest that these plasma lncRNAs are involved in the pathogenesis of PD by sponging miRNAs and regulating gene expression in the SN of the brain. We propose that the upregulated and downregulated lncRNA-mediated ceRNA networks represent mechanisms of neuroinflammation and dopamine neurotransmission, respectively. Our ceRNA network, which was associated with PD, suggests the potential use of DE miRNAs and lncRNAs as body fluid diagnostic biomarkers. These findings provide an integrated view of the mechanisms underlying gene regulation and interactions in PD

    The appropriateness of single page of activation of the cardiac catheterization laboratory by emergency physician for patients with suspected ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: a cohort study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The early use of reperfusion therapy has a significant effect on the prognosis of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and it is recommended that emergency department (ED) physicians activate the cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) as soon as possible to treat these patients. The aim of this study was to examine the appropriateness of emergency physician activation of the CCL for patients with suspected STEMI. Inappropriate activations (i.e., false positive activations) were identified according to a variety of criteria.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>All patients with emergency physician CCL activations between August 2009 and April 2011 were included in the study. False positive cases were defined according to ECG criteria and cardiologists' reviews of patients' initial clinical information.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>ED physicians used a STEMI page to activate the CCL 117 times. According to reviews by cardiologists, this activation was appropriate 89.8% of the time (in 105/117 cases). Truly unnecessary activation (i.e., cases in which STEMI was not identified by the cardiologists, no clear culprit coronary artery was present, no significant coronary artery disease and cardiac biomarkers were negative) occurred 5.1% of the time (in 6/117 cases).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>CCL activation was appropriate for most patients and was unnecessary in a relatively small percentage of cases. This result supports the current recommendation for CCL activation by emergency physicians. Such early activation is a key strategy in the reduction of door-to-balloon time.</p

    Effects of a radiation dose reduction strategy for computed tomography in severely injured trauma patients in the emergency department: an observational study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Severely injured trauma patients are exposed to clinically significant radiation doses from computed tomography (CT) imaging in the emergency department. Moreover, this radiation exposure is associated with an increased risk of cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine some effects of a radiation dose reduction strategy for CT in severely injured trauma patients in the emergency department.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We implemented the radiation dose reduction strategy in May 2009. A prospective observational study design was used to collect data from patients who met the inclusion criteria during this one year study (intervention group) from May 2009 to April 2010. The prospective data were compared with data collected retrospectively for one year prior to the implementation of the radiation dose reduction strategy (control group). By comparison of the cumulative effective dose and the number of CT examinations in the two groups, we evaluated effects of a radiation dose reduction strategy. All the patients met the institutional adult trauma team activation criteria. The radiation doses calculated by the CT scanner were converted to effective doses by multiplication by a conversion coefficient.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 118 patients were included in this study. Among them, 33 were admitted before May 2009 (control group), and 85 were admitted after May 2009 (intervention group). There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding baseline characteristics, such as injury severity and mortality. Additionally, there was no difference between the two groups in the mean number of total CT examinations per patient (4.8 vs. 4.5, respectively; p = 0.227). However, the mean effective dose of the total CT examinations per patient significantly decreased from 78.71 mSv to 29.50 mSv (p < 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The radiation dose reduction strategy for CT in severely injured trauma patients effectively decreased the cumulative effective dose of the total CT examinations in the emergency department. But not effectively decreased the number of CT examinations.</p

    Biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids and their protective effect against heavy metals in nitrogen-fixing black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)

    Purpose: To examine the effect of various heavy metals (HMs) on phenylpropanoid pathway compounds in Robinia pseudoacacia.Methods: A series of pot culture experiments were performed to understand how the metabolic profile of phenylpropanoid compounds were affected by various HMs, such as redox-active HMs (AgNO3 and CuCl2), and non-redox-active HMs (HgCl2). Phenylpropanoid compound level was evaluated by high performance liquid chromatography.Results: The total phenylpropanoid level in leaves increased significantly in all the treated groups when compared to that in the untreated group (p &lt; 0.05). However, a significant effect on the total phenylpropanoid levels was only found for redox-active HMs (p &lt; 0.05), whereas non-redox-active HMs showed less accumulation. Chlorogenic acid and rutin were the two major phenylpropanoid compounds found after the plants were subjected to redox and non-redox-active HMs stress. However, when compared to these two compounds, the levels of catechin hydrate, epicatechin, p-coumaric acid, kaempferol, and quercetin were lower. Caffeic acid level was significantly decreased in both redox and non-redox-active HMs when compared to that in the control (p &lt; 0.05). In addition, trans-cinnamic acid accumulation was altered based on the types and concentration of HMs.Conclusion: Phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway participated in the HM tolerance process for the protection of R. pseudoacacia from oxidative damage caused by HMs, thus allowing the species to grow in highly HMs-contaminated areas.     Curcumin induces stabilization of Nrf2 protein through Keap1 cysteine modification

    The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of curcumin, a representative chemopreventive phytochemical with pronounced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, on activation of Nrf2 and expression of its target protein heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in mouse skin in vivo and in cultured murine epidermal cells. Treatment of mouse epidermal JB6 cells with curcumin resulted in the induction of HO-1 expression, and this was abrogated in cells transiently transfected with Nrf2 siRNA. While curcumin treatment increased protein expression of Nrf2, it did not alter the steady-state level of the Nrf2 mRNA transcript. Treatment of cells with curcumin stabilized Nrf2 by inhibiting ubiquitination and subsequent 26S proteasomal degradation of this transcription factor. Tetrahydrocurcumin, a non-electrophilic analogue of curcumin that lacks the alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl group, failed to induce HO-1 expression as well as nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and its binding to the antioxidant/electrophile response elements. Cells transfected with a mutant Keap1 protein in which cysteine 151 (Cys151) is replaced by serine exhibited marked reduction in curcumin-induced Nrf2 transactivation. Mass spectrometric analysis revealed that curcumin binds to Keap1 Cys151, supporting that this amino acid is a critical target for curcumin modification of Keap1, which facilitates the liberation of Nrf2. Thus, it is likely that the alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl moiety of curcumin is essential for its binding to Keap1 and stabilization of Nrf2 by hampering ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation.

    Realization of giant magnetoelectricity in helimagnets

    We show that low field magnetoelectric (ME) properties of helimagnets Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2(Fe1-xAlx)12O22 can be efficiently tailored by Al-substitution level. As x increases, the critical magnetic field for switching electric polarization is systematically reduced from ~1 T down to ~1 mT, and the ME susceptibility is greatly enhanced to reach a giant value of 2.0 x 10^4 ps/m at an optimum x = 0.08. We find that control of nontrivial orbital moment in the octahedral Fe sites through the Al-substitution is crucial for fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy and obtaining the conspicuously improved ME characteristics

    Flavonol glycosides from the aerial parts of Aceriphyllum rossii and their antioxidant activities

    The methanol extract obtained from the aerial parts ofAceriphyllum rossii (Saxifragaceae) was fractionated into ethyl acetate (EtOAc),n-BuOH and H2O layers through solvent fractionation. Repeated silica gel column chromatography of EtOAc andn-BuOH layers afforded six flavonol glycosides. They were identified as kaempferol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (astragalin,1), quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (isoquercitrin,2), kaempferol 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyrano-side (rutin,4), kaempferol 3-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→4)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside] (5) and quercetin 3-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→4)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside] (6) on the basis of several spectral data. The antioxidant activity of the six compounds was investigated using two free radicals such as the ABTS free radical and superoxide anion radical. Compound1 exhibited the highest antioxidant activity in the ABTS2,2-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging method. 100 mg/L of compound1 was equivalent to 72.1±1.4 mg/L of vitamin C, and those of compounds3 and5 were equivalent to 62.7±0.5 mg/L and 54.3±1.3 mg/L of vitamin C, respectively. And in the superoxide anion radical scavenging method, compound5 exhibited the highest activity with an IC50 value of 17.6 ± 0.3 μM.     Prediction Forecast for Culex tritaeniorhynchus Populations in Korea

    AbstractObjectivesJapanese encephalitis is considered as a secondary legal infectious disease in Korea and is transmitted by mosquitoes in the summer season. The purpose of this study was to predict the ratio of Culex tritaeniorhynchus to all the species of mosquitoes present in the study regions.MethodsFrom 1999 to 2012, black light traps were installed in 10 regions in Korea (Busan, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, and Jeju) to capture mosquitoes for identification and classification under a dissecting microscope. The number of mosquitoes captured/week was used to calculate its daily occurrence (mosquitoes/trap/night). To predict the characteristics of the mosquito population, an autoregressive model of order p (AR(p)) was used to execute the out-of-sample prediction and the in-sample estimation after presumption.ResultsCompared with the out-of-sample method, the sample-weighted regression method's case was relatively superior for prediction, and this method predicted a decrease in the frequency of Cx. tritaeniorhynchus for 2013. However, the actual frequency of this species showed an increase in frequency. By contrast, the frequency rate of all the mosquitoes including Cx. tritaeniorhynchus gradually decreased.ConclusionThe number of patients with Japanese encephalitis has been strongly associated with the occurrence and density of vector mosquitoes, and the importance of this infectious disease has been highlighted since 2010. The 2013 prediction indicated an increase after an initial decrease, although the ratio of the two mosquito species decreased. The increase in vector density may be due to changes in temperature and the environment. Thus, continuous prevalence prediction is warranted
