This paper seeks to review the linkage between schema-building and listening learning. It commences with an overview of the two constructs “listening” and “schema” followed by an analysis of benefits of schema-building on language learning as the major theoretical framework. Keywords: schema; schema theory; listening; language acquisition; motivatio

Asian American Studies and the Fight for Worker Justice

    Get PDF
This essay explores higher education–labor partnerships in the contemporary era between Asian American Studies (AAS), the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), and AAS community partnerships. With the intensified attacks on workers, unions, and Asian American, Pacific Islander, and other communities of color, the importance of higher education and labor and community partnerships will be a valuable resource to expand critical research and participatory education. These partnerships embody the community studies’ roots of AAS. Using three case studies, this essay highlights these partnerships and concludes with a discussion of the opportunities and challenges students can experience when working in labor union spaces and recommendations for building university-labor partnerships

Focusing on Excessive Gestational Weight Gain through Weight Tracking Among Participants of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in Southern California

Background and Purpose: Studies have shown that maternal obesity and excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) lead to adverse health outcomes for the mother and her offspring. Yet, knowledge of the best way to intervene is still lacking. The objective of this study was to develop, pilot and evaluate a sustainable intervention to prevent excessive GWG among participants of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in southern California. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study where the intervention group received an individual education program that included a GWG tracker. The historical control group was a group of women from the same WIC site who gave birth before the start of the intervention, therefore did not receive the intervention. Chi-square tests and t-tests were used to compare characteristics of the control and intervention groups and the proportions of women exceeding the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations for GWG. Results: The impact of the intervention was strongest for overweight women. 62.5% of the control group gained more than the recommended amount compared to 48.6% in the intervention group. Conclusion: A simple weight tracking intervention could be a cost-neutral way to help WIC participants avoid excessive GWG

Perceptions of Diet and Physical Activity Among California Hmong Adults and Youths

IntroductionWe conducted a qualitative study to inform the design of a proposed community-wide campaign to promote increased physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption among low-income Hmong families.MethodsWe held eight focus groups with parents of children aged 5 to 14 years and with youths aged 11 to 14 years, interviews with key informants in several Hmong communities, and interviews with professionals who conducted physical activity and nutrition activities in these communities. Sessions were tape-recorded and transcribed. We organized data using ATLAS.ti software and then analyzed the content.ResultsFindings suggest that physically active lifestyles and dietary patterns emphasizing fresh foods including fruits and vegetables are valued in the Hmong culture and perceived as essential to good health. Barriers to a healthy lifestyle include limited access to safe spaces, time for adequate physical activity, access to land to grow fresh produce, and time for home preparation of food. Low incomes and marketing of unhealthy foods, particularly to children, are also problematic. Information on the healthy aspects of both traditional foods and American foods is needed in accessible formats and delivered through media and trusted community sources.ConclusionLike other Asian groups, the majority of Hmong are first-generation immigrants. An increase in nutrition-related chronic diseases can be prevented by encouraging and reinforcing the maintenance of traditional eating patterns and active lifestyles

Empirical Analysis on Factors of Enterprise Competitiveness: A Case Study for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Northern Rural Areas of Vietnam

    Get PDF
This paper attempted to analyze the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises in northern rural areas of Vietnam under the globalization. By using “Resource Cost Ratio” (RCR coefficient), analysis was conducted at enterprise level to identify evidence of competitive advantages. In order to question which has the most influence on the enterprise’s competitiveness, the relationship between RCR and each contributed factor  were quantified. The results of the study revealed no case of competitive enterprises in 2008. Enterprises from Hanoi were less competitive than those from other provinces. Service enterprises were more competitive than the others according to the business sector. In terms of legal form, the more competitive enterprises were the private, state-owned, and limited liability and the less were foreign-invested and joint-stock enterprises. The positive influence of sales of products, revenue losses, and cost of land rent and the negative influence of raw material and energy cost mostly caused the change of the RCR coefficient. The recommendations to enhance competitiveness were the government should abrogate unnecessary formalities in land hiring procedure and the enterprises should adopt advanced marketing practices and upgrade production facilities.Key words: Competitiveness; Resource cost ratio (RCR); Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs

By using method of using inhibitor, it was found that the catalytic process of indigocarmine (Ind) oxidation take place according to the radical chain mechanism with a generation of free active OH* radical reacting with Ind, H4L, In (Lumomagnezone  - Lm, Hydroquinon - Hq, Paranitrozodimetylanilin - Pa) in the systems: H2O - Ni2+ - HCO3- - Lm - Ac -H2O2 (2) H2O - Ni2+ - HCO3- - Lm  - Hq -H2O2 (3) H2O - Ni2+ - HCO3- - Lm - Pa -H2O2 (4) This article presents our results of calculating the rate constant k(Ind+OH*) of oxidizing reaction of Indigocarmine by hydroxyl radicals OH*. k(Ind + OH*) was calculated by using Turbopascal programming languages. Keywords. Inhibitor, indigocarmine, hydroxyl radicals

Happiness has long been a veritable area of scientific research in most industrialized countries. Using the method of synthesis of documents and interview method, the study investigates the current state of happiness of 30 female officers and employees of Danang University of Physical Education and Sports using the author's happiness scale. Michael Argyle and Peter Hills (2002) have shown: 30.0% less are happy; 43.33% are happy on average; 26.67% are moderately happy; the most important factor in happiness is health. Subject-selected measures that can increase happiness are finding moments with loved ones in the family; practising more positive thinking; accepting the reality of the situation; join arts and sports clubs

RECONSTRUCTION OF DIVACANCY IN ZIGZAG-BUCKLED SILICENE NANORIBBONS

In this study, we use a tight binding model to investigate structural and electronic changes in zigzag-buckled silicene nanoribbons (ZBSiNRs) with two vacancies at different positions. We divide the defects into two categories based on a difference in geometric properties. The results show that the first- and second-order interaction parameters of two atoms of the same type play an important role in the electronic properties of this material. Vacancies near the edge have a stronger effect than those near the center of the ribbons. We further show that each type of divacancy will give a different result under the influence of a perpendicular electric field. This is a favorable condition for controlling the conductive state of materials in future applications in the semiconductor and thermoelectric industries
