Korean value systems and managerial practices
Human beings are by nature sociocultural creatures. Our behavior is influenced not only by traditional value systems but also by contemporary education and training. In the same manner, the managerial practices of Korean managers are strongly influenced by the norms and value systems of the traditional Korean society. But, as the society changes from an agrarian society to an industrialized one, so does the behavior of Korean managers. This chapter focuses on the process of this change. More specifically, it will look at the effects of traditional value systems and those of industrialization on Korean managerial practices
A High-Precision Micropipette Sensor for Cellular-Level Real-Time Thermal Characterization
We report herein development of a novel glass micropipette thermal sensor fabricated in a cost-effective manner, which is capable of measuring steady thermal fluctuation at spatial resolution of similar to 2 mu m with an accuracy of +/- 0.01 degrees C. We produced and tested various micrometer-sized sensors, ranging from 2 mu m to 30 mu m. The sensor comprises unleaded low-melting-point solder alloy (Sn-based) as a core metal inside a pulled borosilicate glass pipette and a thin film of nickel coating outside, creating a thermocouple junction at the tip. The sensor was calibrated using a thermally insulated calibration chamber, the temperature of which can be controlled with an accuracy of +/- 0.01 degrees C, and the thermoelectric power (Seebeck coefficient) of the sensor was recorded from 8.46 to 8.86 mu V/degrees C. We have demonstrated the capability of measuring temperatures at a cellular level by inserting our temperature sensor into the membrane of a live retinal pigment epithelium cell subjected to a laser beam with a focal spot of 6 mu m. Systematic analysis of group identification in stock markets
We propose improved methods to identify stock groups using the correlation
matrix of stock price changes. By filtering out the marketwide effect and the
random noise, we construct the correlation matrix of stock groups in which
nontrivial high correlations between stocks are found. Using the filtered
correlation matrix, we successfully identify the multiple stock groups without
any extra knowledge of the stocks by the optimization of the matrix
representation and the percolation approach to the correlation-based network of
stocks. These methods drastically reduce the ambiguities while finding stock
groups using the eigenvectors of the correlation matrix.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

Condensation and Clustering in the Driven Pair Exclusion Process
We investigate particle condensation in a driven pair exclusion process on
one- and two- dimensional lattices under the periodic boundary condition. The
model describes a biased hopping of particles subject to a pair exclusion
constraint that each particle cannot stay at a same site with its pre-assigned
partner. The pair exclusion causes a mesoscopic condensation characterized by
the scaling of the condensate size and the number of
condensates with the total number of sites .
Those condensates are distributed randomly without hopping bias. We find that
the hopping bias generates a spatial correlation among condensates so that a
cluster of condensates appears. Especially, the cluster has an anisotropic
shape in the two-dimensional system. The mesoscopic condensation and the
clustering are studied by means of numerical simulations.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Automated System for Early Breast Cancer Detection in Mammograms
The increasing demand on mammographic screening for early breast cancer detection, and the subtlety of early breast cancer signs on mammograms, suggest an automated image processing system that can serve as a diagnostic aid in radiology clinics. We present a fully automated algorithm for detecting clusters of microcalcifications that are the most common signs of early, potentially curable breast cancer. By using the contour map of the mammogram, the algorithm circumvents some of the difficulties encountered with standard image processing methods. The clinical implementation of an automated instrument based on this algorithm is also discussed
The effect of high-speed power training on physical frailty in older adults: Effect of a visual-guided exercise program in South Korean rural areas
Objective. Exercise has been shown to be an effective intervention; the difficulty still lies in providing exercise programs to the older adults in rural areas. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of a 12-week exercise program provided with visual guidelines (prerecorded video) on frailty among older adults in rural areas. Methods. Fifty participants (71.7 ± 4.9 years) from 5 different rural areas were recruited and divided into two groups: the exercise group (EX, n = 24 (male: 8, female: 18)) and the control group (CON, n = 26 (male: 7, female: 17)). With the commencement of the exercise intervention, a prerecorded high-speed power training program for frail older adults was distributed to the EX group. A new prerecorded exercise program was delivered to the EX group every 4 weeks. Frailty status was diagnosed with Fried’s criteria before and after the intervention. Muscle strength was measured in the upper and lower limb strength (hand-grip strength and leg extension and flexion), and physical function was measured using a short physical performance battery and gait speed. Fasting blood was collected before and after the intervention and analyzed for blood lipid profile. Results. After 12 weeks of the intervention period, a significant difference in frailty status () and score () favoring the EX group was observed. Physical functions (gait speed () and time for sit to stand ()) were significantly improved in the EX group with a significant increase in knee extensor strength (). A significant difference in serum high-density lipoprotein levels favoring the EX group () was also observed. Conclusions. This study confirmed the positive effect of a visual-guided exercise program on older adults’ residents in rural areas and provided alternative methods to effectively provide exercise program for the older adults with limited resources
Cost-Efficient Millimeter Wave Base Station Deployment in Manhattan-Type Geometry

One approach to this problem is to increase the density of base stations (BSs) to achieve macro diversity gains. Dense BS deployment, however, incurs the increased BS installation cost as well as power consumption. In this work, we propose a framework for connectivity-constrained minimum cost mmWave BS deployment in Manhattan-type geometry (MTG). A closed-form expression of network connectivity is characterized as a function of various factors such as obstacle sizes, BS transmit power, and the densities of obstacles and BSs. Optimization that attains the minimum cost is made possible by incorporating a tight lower bound of the analyzed connectivity expression. A low-complexity algorithm is devised to effectively find an optimal tradeoff between the BS density and transmit power that results in the minimum BS deployment cost while guaranteeing network connectivity. Numerical simulations corroborate our analysis and quantify the best tradeoff of the BS density and transmit power. The proposed BS deployment strategies are evaluated in different network cost configurations, providing useful insights in mmWave network planning and dimensioning
