Acoustic signature for chaos and fractal geometries

    Get PDF
One discipline of study that has been coming up in the recent years is the study in the behavior of nonlinear systems. Most of these exhibit chaos traits and this has spurred much interest. Fractal geometries, which are as a result of chaos behavior, have been more feasible to research on, with the recent computer technology. Most of these fractal behaviors can be mapped into the sound domain. This \u27sound domain\u27 is referred to as acoustic signature. This thesis majors on a way to map out the fractals to the sound domain without much change in the parameters that define the fractal. Some of these parameters include position of the individual points on the drawing axis and the way a fractal appears in form of a color map. Due to their dependence on initial conditions sometimes they may look similar and hence a method is needed that can distinguish them. The different types of fractals are mapped in different ways. Some of these ways involve producing an audio wave (known as wav file) that is further converted to MIDI

Leadership has small but educationally significant indirect influence on students learning outcomes. Conversely, teachers account for significant variance of students’ academic performance. Principals’ leadership styles can increase teachers’ capacities and commitments and thus increase their output which can be reflected in improved students’ academic performance. Transformational leadership practices have been shown to increase employee capacities and commitments. The purpose of this study was to establish the relationship between principals’ involvement in developing teachers and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Machakos County, Kenya. This study adopted a descriptive survey design. The study targeted all the 331 principals and 3,006 teachers in public secondary schools in Machakos County. Using simple random sampling, a total of 100 principals were selected and five teachers equally selected from the schools with the sampled principals making a total of 500 teachers. Data collection instruments included questionnaires for principals, questionnaires for teachers and document analysis checklists. Quantitative data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistical tools used were frequencies, percentages, Mean and Standard Deviation while inferential statistical tools such as ANOVA and regression analysis were used to analyze the quantitative  Qualitative data was analyzed thematically through content analysis and the responses were presented in narratives. Tables and figures were used to present the analyzed data. The results revealed that there was statistical relationship (p<0.05) between principals involvement in teacher development and students’ academic performance which was positive but moderate (R= .671). Based on the results, it was concluded that transformational leadership practices influence students’ academic performance. The study recommends principals to increase transformational leadership practice of developing teachers since it influences students’ academic performance. ABSTRACTDespite implementation of various land reform policies in South Africa post 1994 to address poverty and inequality, poor performance of the restituted farms and unimproved livelihoods of farm beneficiaries still exist. Hence, the objective of the study was to develop an intervention strategy to improve livelihoods of farm beneficiaries in South Africa and beyond. Qualitative and quantitative studies were used to collect data from key stakeholders and farm beneficiaries from 32 farms in Waterberg District. Focus group discussions, non-participatory observation, interviews and feedback sessions were used to collect qualitative data from 26 key informants. A questionnaire was also utilized to collect quantitative data from 289 farm beneficiaries. Thematic content analysis and Atlas ti version 8 were used to analyse qualitative data, while Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 was used for quantitative data. Ranking analysis was performed to determine factors contributing to non-performance of the farms. Majority of respondents (84.4%) agreed that farm production decreased and beneficiaries `livelihoods remained the same since restoration until 2015. Therefore, an intervention strategy was developed that included support production system, improved market access, incorporation of agricultural economics experts and engineers, to unleash agricultural potential in restituted farms to improve beneficiaries ‘livelihoods.

Farmland was regarded as the most important asset used to enhance agricultural productivity in developing countries to improve the livelihoods of restitution farm beneficiaries. Most, unfortunately, recent reports show decreased agricultural productivity in most developing countries. In South Africa, the Land restitution program was introduced to restore land to people dispossessed by apartheid government after 1913. However, production in the restitution farms has declined. This study aimed to address the non-performance of the restitution farms in Waterberg District and evaluate their production performance. A questionnaire was administered to gather quantitative data on the farms’ production and the benefits accrued from the farms. Data was captured using Geographic Information System (GIS), and then a remote sensing analysis method was used to map restitution farms to illustrate farms performance. Statistical Package for the Social Scientists (SPSS) version 25 was used to compute statistics on-farm production. About 83% of beneficiaries have not benefitted from the 32 farms, while 61.6% did not have markets, and 64% reported a lack of farms income. Generally, lack of farm production impeded beneficiaries from receiving benefits and employment. The study recommended that private organizations and sector departments work together to assist beneficiaries with capacity building, marketing of farm produce, and funds to improve production

This study examines the satisfaction levels of employees at the Legal Aid Society (LAS) in Rochester New York. Employees satisfaction in terms of being satisfied or not satisfied with their job was measured using a survey instrument that consisted of qualitative and quantitative questions. The quantitative part contained 75 statements asking employees to indicate their level of agreement or disagreement on a six-point Likert-scale. The qualitativl:! .S(:!(.:tiun was comprised of three, open-ended questions asking participants to respond in terms of what they like, dislike, and recommendations for improvements about their jobs at Legal Aid Society. Data were gathered from 43 subjects, all working at LAS. Results indicate that overall, the whole organization is facing critical hygiene issues with pay and benefits on top of the list, followed by working conditions. The theoretical and methodological implications, the limitations of the study and scope for further research are presented. KEYWORDS: job satisfaction; motivation; nonprofits; for-profits; hygiene issues; and employee satisfaction

A CAJM article on the appropriate clomipramine dosage among depressed African outpatients in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.Ethnic and racial factors have been implicated as determinants to the outcome of psychotropic medication. Ethnic differences in response to such medication affects dosage requirements and risk of potential side effects. Looking specifically at antidepressant medication, significantly lower treatment and maintenance dosage requirements have been noted in Orientals when compared to Occidentals. Patients were noted to respond equally to antidepressants regardless of the dosage chosen in Asia and other developing countries as opposed to the Occident where higher doses were effective

Wnt signaling in granulosa cell tumors of the ovary

    Get PDF
Granulosa cell tumors (GCT), a malignant type of sex-cord stromal tumor, account for approximately 2-5% of all ovarian malignancies. They are often identified before they have spread beyond the ovary, but advanced disease can be quite challenging to treat. Wnt signaling has been suggested to contribute to the formation of GCT. We hypothesized Wnt signaling was involved in human GCT

There is an increasing incidence of higher order gestations especially due to fertility treatments, associated with higher morbidity and mortality. This is a case of a primigravida with triplet gestation with first foetal demise at 14 weeks who was referred for termination of pregnancy which she declined. Patient was on close followup with weekly ultrasounds. The second demise occurred at 21 weeks. At 26 weeks, patient was noted to have absent foetal movements and Doppler studies revealed a Restrictive Index (R.I) of 1 and Biophysical Profile (BPP) of 2/8.She was to be admitted for emergency hysterotomy but theydeclined. The third foetal demise occurred two days later. The patient was induced and delivered 3 macerated still births (MSBs). Grossly post-delivery umbilical cord entanglement. All the foetuses were male. Patient declined a post-mortem
