    Liquid crystal display and organic light-emitting diode display: present status and future perspectives

    Recently, ‘Liquid crystal display (LCD) vs. organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display: who wins?’ has become a topic of heated debate. In this review, we perform a systematic and comparative study of these two flat panel display technologies. First, we review recent advances in LCDs and OLEDs, including material development, device configuration and system integration. Next we analyze and compare their performances by six key display metrics: response time, contrast ratio, color gamut, lifetime, power efficiency, and panel flexibility. In this section, we focus on two key parameters: motion picture response time (MPRT) and ambient contrast ratio (ACR), which dramatically affect image quality in practical application scenarios. MPRT determines the image blur of a moving picture, and ACR governs the perceived image contrast under ambient lighting conditions. It is intriguing that LCD can achieve comparable or even slightly better MPRT and ACR than OLED, although its response time and contrast ratio are generally perceived to be much inferior to those of OLED. Finally, three future trends are highlighted, including high dynamic range, virtual reality/augmented reality and smart displays with versatile functions

    Development of dextran sulphate sodium-induced experimental colitis is suppressed in genetically mast cell-deficient Ws/Ws rats

    Ws/Ws rats have a small deletion of the c-kit gene, and are deficient in both mucosal-type mast cells (MMC) and connective tissue-type mast cells (CTMC). In the present study we investigated the role of intestinal MMC in the development of dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced experimental colitis using Ws/Ws rats. Ws/Ws and control (+/+) rats were given a 3% DSS aqueous solution orally for 10 days, and the subsequent mucosal damage was evaluated macroscopically and histologically. The mucosal myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities and histamine levels were also measured. (i) DSS induced severe oedema and hyperaemia with sporadic erosions in the control (+/+) rats, but these changes were significantly attenuated in the Ws/Ws rats (P < 0.01). (ii) The microscopic mucosal damage score was lower in the Ws/Ws rats than in the control (+/+) rats (P = 0.06). (iii) There were no significant differences in mucosal MPO activity between the Ws/Ws and control (+/+) rats (P = 0.46). (iv) The mucosal histamine levels in the colon were significantly reduced in the Ws/Ws rats compared with the control (+/+) rats (P < 0.05). (v) Significant positive correlations were observed between mucosal histamine levels and the degree of mucosal oedema (calculated as colonic wet weight/protein content) (r = 0.778, P < 0.01), and between histamine levels and the macroscopic damage (r = 0.623, P < 0.05), respectively. (vi) DSS induced a local recruitment of MMC in the colonic mucosa of Ws/Ws rats, and mucosal damage gradually increased in accordance with this MMC recruitment. These results indicate that MMC play an important role in the development of DSS colitis

    Alkali‐free processing of advanced open‐celled sinter‐crystallized glass‐ceramics

    The cooling of a melt corresponding to the eutectic between wollastonite (CaSiO3) and diopside (CaMgSi2O6) determines the synthesis of an interesting example of alkali-free bioactive glass, easily converted into glass-ceramics featuring two silicate phases, coupled also with Äkermanite (Ca2MgSi2O7), by sinter-crystallization of fine glass powders at 1000°C. The fabrication of scaffolds by digital light processing of glass powders suspended in a photo-curable, sacrificial binder, is a well-established technique; the present paper aims at disclosing novel approaches, concerning the topology of scaffolds, offering components with remarkable strength, especially in bending conditions. As an alternative, glass-ceramic foams were fabricated by the firing of porous precursors derived from the gelation of suspensions of glass powders in alkali-free basic aqueous solution
