    A Comparative Study of Multimodal Approaches to Learning: To Support Children’s Learning in the Early Years

    Multimodal approaches to teaching and learning within early years education support children’s diverse experiences and competencies. Within a multimodal process, different modes can communicate meaning in several ways. The Play and Learn through the Arts (PLA) programme and the Argyle project offer the opportunity to embrace the framework of a multimodal approach to children’s learning, though they have salient differences. This paper aims to explore the content of the PLA and the Argyle project as two practical examples which can be used to create a multimodal environment in early years settings. The discussion concludes with the significant contribution of the PLA programme to children’s learning using the arts as a teaching method through a child-led process within the multimodal framework; though the Argyle project presented the concept of multiliteracies which was also an important component for a multimodal environment. This paper can be useful to early years practitioners to explore different practical examples of children’s multimodal learning in everyday practice

    Effect of Psoralea corylifolia extract on physically induced depression in mice.

    The mouse forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) are widely used to predict anti-depressant efficacy indicated by immobility time to be reduced by several different classes of anti-depressant drugs. PCE feeding at the dose of 75,150 and 300 mg/kg reduced the immobility duration at 14-days and 21-days, however the decrease was significant in mice treated with PCE for 21-days also, extract had no effect on spontaneous motor activity in mice, indicating that extract had no excitatory or inhibitory action on central nervous system in effective dose range, which eliminated the probability of false-positive results in forced swimming test and tail suspension test. Interestingly, the dose-response effect of PCE on reduction of serum CRF levels was concomitance with that on increase of brain 5-HT contents, as well as on swimming increase, indicating that the serotonergic system and the HPA axis responds with the production of 5-HT and CRF profiles that is characteristic for PCE applied in the mouse FST. Our results demonstrate that the oral administration of PCE possesses an anti-depressant-like activity, as evidenced by behavioural studies. Detailed investigations are needed to fully elucidate the mechanism of action at cellular level for the bioactive constituents present in the extract.

    PROGESTERONE AND ESTRADIOL PROFILES DURING ESTROUS CYCLE AND GESTATION IN DWARF GOATS (CAPRA HIRCUS)

    Serum progesterone and estradiol profiles during estrous cycle, gestation and parturition in four Dwarf goat females (Capra hircus) were monitored. Blood sampling was carried out daily during estrous cycle and on alternate days during gestation till parturition. Observations regarding length of estrous cycle, gestation length, litter size and birth weight of kids were recorded. With the initiation of cyclicity, estradiol attained higher levels (7.7 ± 1.7 pg/ml) at estrus phase and dropped down to the lower levels within 3 to 4 days post-estrus. Concomitantly, progesterone started to increase from the mean basal value of 0.1 ± 0.03 ng/ml on day-0 to 3.0 ± 0.9 ng/ml on day-6 of estrous cycle and reached the peak value of 7.7 ± 0.6 ng/ml on day-12. From day-15, a decline was observed in progesterone values till the end of the cycle. A second estradiol rise of 14.0 ± 1.2pg/ml was observed on day-18 of the cycle. The mean estrous cycle length was 18.2 ± 2.1 days. During gestation, higher progesterone levels were maintained in the range of 4.3–11.0 ng/ml. Estradiol remained at lower concentrations for 30-50 days of gestation, then gradually increased and reached 270 ± 13.0 pg/ml a few days before parturition. It dropped again to basal values within 1-2 days postpartum. The mean gestation length in Dwarf goats was 144.8 ± 3.9 days and the litter size was 1.8 ± 0.5. It was concluded that Dwarf goat is a prolific breed, having a short gestation length with multiple births being common

    CHARACTERIZATION OF ENDOCRINE EVENTS AT OESTRUS IN DWARF GOAT (CAPRA HIRCUS)

    This study was conducted to characterize the profiles of LH, estradiol and progesterone hormones during oestrus in Dwarf goats. Five does were synchronized into oestrus with 2 intramuscular injections of PGF2 at an interval of 10 days. Blood samples were drawn at 8 h intervals from 0 to 77 h after second injection and hormones were estimated by radioimmunoassay (RIA). One of the does did not show oestrus. In two goats, LH rises were observed from hours 25-45 and attained peak levels at h-70 after second PGF2 injection. In two other does the rise in LH was significantly earlier and reached peak levels at 24-30 h. The concentration of LH ranged between 7.5 and 30 ng/ml (mean 19 ng/ml). The estradiol peaks in does were noticed at the same time as that of the LH. Estradiol concentrations varied between 9 and 16 pg/ml (mean 12 pg/ml). The progesterone remained at basal levels (0.1-0.2 ng/ml) throughout the oestrus in all animals. These results indicate that the estradiol and LH rises have temporal relationship with each other, rising almost at the same time and LH fall was earlier than estradiol

    We consider a Bianchi type II model in which anisotropic dark energy is interacting with dark matter and anisotropic radiation. With this scenario, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics.     Microwave-assisted in situ laser dye incorporation into high sensitivity whispering gallery mode microresonators

    Optical whispering gallery mode microresonators (WGM-μRs) are powerful sensitive components with many analytical applications. Here, spherical WGM-μRs have been synthesised in a single-step microwave (MW)-assisted heterophase polymerisation. The microresonators are based on poly(styrene) beads into which the organic lasing dye nile red was incorporated as gain medium in situ during the polymerisation. The particle diameter and diameter distribution of the synthesised particles were tuned in the range of around 200 nm up to 50 μm by adjusting the concentration between stabiliser poly-(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and monomer styrene, and the solvent composition in the dispersion process. Lower water content enabled the synthesis of spherical particles with large size polydispersity, from which WGM-μRs with a variety of diameters were selected. Microspheres with diameters ≳3.5 μm supported WGMs. The WGMs were excited through free space via the fluorescence of the laser dye. Pumping power levels <1 μW were sufficient to excite WGMs. WGM shifts of beads with diameter between ≈5 and 30 μm measured in air and water show a sensitivity up to 54 nm/RIU for the smallest particles. Dye doped WGM-μR in the low μm size range obtained by the MW-assisted polymerisation process with its versatility, low processing times and high yields opens new horizons for the applications of these systems as sensors

    Contribution of food sources to the vitamin B12 status of South Indian children from a birth cohort recruited in the city of Mysore.

    OBJECTIVE: There is evidence that subclinical vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency is common in India. Vegetarianism is prevalent and therefore meat consumption is low. Our objective was to explore the contribution of B12-source foods and maternal B12 status during pregnancy to plasma B12 concentrations. DESIGN: Maternal plasma B12 concentrations were measured during pregnancy. Children's dietary intakes and plasma B12 concentrations were measured at age 9.5 years; B12 and total energy intakes were calculated using food composition databases. We used linear regression to examine associations between maternal B12 status and children's intakes of B12 and B12-source foods, and children's plasma B12 concentrations. SETTING: South Indian city of Mysore and surrounding rural areas. SUBJECTS: Children from the Mysore Parthenon Birth Cohort (n 512, 47.1 % male). RESULTS: Three per cent of children were B12 deficient (<150 pmol/l). A further 14 % had 'marginal' B12 concentrations (150-221 pmol/l). Children's total daily B12 intake and consumption frequencies of meat and fish, and micronutrient-enriched beverages were positively associated with plasma B12 concentrations (P=0.006, P=0.01 and P=0.04, respectively, adjusted for socio-economic indicators and maternal B12 status). Maternal pregnancy plasma B12 was associated with children's plasma B12 concentrations, independent of current B12 intakes (P<0.001). Milk and curd (yoghurt) intakes were unrelated to B12 status. CONCLUSIONS: Meat and fish are important B12 sources in this population. Micronutrient-enriched beverages appear to be important sources in our cohort, but their high sugar content necessitates care in their recommendation. Improving maternal B12 status in pregnancy may improve Indian children's status

    Competent synthesis of biaryl analogs via asymmetric Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling for the development of anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents

    Based on the core structure of diflunisal drug, herein, we report a resembling series of biaryl analogs (3a–j) containing halogens, nitro, and methoxy substituents. They were designed and synthesized via a Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction using Pd (OH)2 as a catalyst at a temperature of 65 °C with an intent to obtain improved and safer anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents. Suzuki–Miyaura transformation is the most significant among the cross-coupling reactions since its practical advantages include the commercially available low toxic reagents, mild reaction conditions, and functional group compatibility. On the other hand, a few conditions can be used to cross-couple aryl boronic acids or esters with aryl halides, especially 2-benzyl halides. Because of this, a novel Suzuki–Miyaura protocol is investigated that facilitates the selective conversion of halo aromatics, with an emphasis on the reaction to convert substituted bromobenzene to conjugated biphenyls. Finally, the obtained biaryl analogs (3a–j) were tested for in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory and analgesic applications. The results showed that compound 3b performed better than the standard drug with IC50 values comparable to that of the standard drug for COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition.
