    Assessment of the relationship between serum soluble Klotho and carotid intima–media thickness and left ventricular dysfunction in hemodialysis patients

    AbstractBackgroundThe aim of our study was to assess the relationship between soluble Klotho (s-Klotho) and carotid intima–media thickness (CIMT) and left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in hemodialysis (HD) patients.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study conducted on 88 patients with end-stage renal disease on regular HD. Serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, and C-reactive protein were measured. The serum levels of s-Klotho and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) were measured using an Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Echocardiography and measurement of CIMT were also conducted. The studied patients were divided according to the median s-Klotho level into 2 groups: patients with low s-Klotho (Group I) and patients with high s-Klotho (Group II).ResultsMean value of s-Klotho was significantly low in HD patients compared to controls (P = 0.001), and mean value of FGF-23 was significantly high in HD patients compared to controls (P = 0.001). The mean values of parathyroid hormone, FGF-23, and phosphorus were significantly high in Group I compared to Group II, whereas the mean value of serum calcium was significantly low in Group I compared to Group II. The mean values of CIMT, LV mass (LVM), LVM index, and LV ejection fraction (LVEF) were high in Group I compared to Group II. Patients with low s-Klotho had significantly more coronary artery disease (CAD). In a regression analysis of s-Klotho with different markers of cardiovascular diseases, s-Klotho showed significant association with CIMT, LVEF, and CAD, but not with LVM and LVM index.ConclusionThe present study showed that patients with a low s-Klotho were more often associated with increased CIMT, LV dysfunction, and CAD, and it seems that there was independent association between s-Klotho and CIMT, LVEF, and CAD

    Study on Some Heavy Metals of Poultry Meat and Its Products in New Valley Governorate, Egypt

    The food chain creates potential health hazards with regards to the transmission of toxic elements to animal tissues, and subsequently to humans. Poultry meat and egg products contain a wide range of trace elements; some of these are of important nutritional value, such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn), while others have toxic effects, such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) of poultry meat and its products. Therefore, this study was conducted in the laboratories of the Food Sci. and Techno. Depart. Fac. Agric. of New Valley University Egypt. The objective of this study is to study the trace element types in poultry meat (breast & thigh) and egg, to ensure the safety of this products offered in the market from any Pollutants. The results indicated that there were significant differences in heavy elements of poultry meat and egg such as Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cd, As and Hg. The studied heavy elements of poultry meat and egg were under detectable levels in poultry meat and egg, suggesting that there is no threat from toxic heavy metals set by Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality Control. More governmental efforts are needed to control the environmental pollution and improve the environment quality of New Valley Governorate Egypt

    Synthesis, Characterization, and In Vivo Anti-Cancer Activity of New Metal Complexes Derived from Isatin-N(4)antipyrinethiosemicarbazone Ligand Against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cells

    The current study aimed to synthesize new metal coordination complexes with potential biomedical applications. Metal complexes were prepared via the reaction of isatin-N(4)anti- pyrinethiosemicarbazone ligand 1 with Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II), and Fe(III) ions. The obtained metal complexes 2–12 were characterized using elemental, spectral (1H-NMR, EPR, Mass, IR, UV-Vis) and thermal (TGA) techniques, as well as magnetic moment and molar conductance measurements. In addition, their geometries were studied using EPR and UV–Vis spectroscopy. To evaluate the in vivo anti-cancer activities of these complexes, the ligand 1 and its metal complexes 2, 7 and 9 were tested against solid tumors. The solid tumors were induced by subcutaneous (SC) injection of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells in mice. The impact of the selected complexes on the reduction of tumor volume was determined. Also, the expression levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and cysteine aspartyl-specific protease-7 (caspase-7) in tumor and liver tissues of mice bearing EAC tumor were determined. Moreover, their effects on alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), albumin, and glucose levels were measured. The results revealed that the tested compounds, especially complex 9, reduced tumor volume, inhibited the expression of VEGF, and induced the expression of caspase-7. Additionally, they restored the levels of ALT, AST, albumin, and glucose close to their normal levels. Taken together, our newly synthesized metal complexes are promising anti-cancer agents against solid tumors induced by EAC cells as supported by the inhibition of VEGF and induction of caspase-7

    IL10 in Lupus Nephritis: Detection and relationship with disease activity

    Introduction: Glomerulonephritis is a major determinant of the course and prognosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and is evident in 40%–85% of patients. IL10, a cytokine produced by monocytes and-to a lesser extent-lymphocytes, has pleiotropic effects in immune regulation and inflammation. It enhances B cell survival, proliferation, differentiation, and antibody production; these effects play a role in autoimmune diseases. Among identified polymorphisms in the IL10 promoter, three linked single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of -1082 G/A, 819 T/C, and -592 A/C have been shown to influence the IL10 gene expression. Compared with the - 592 C allele, the 592 A is associated with lower IL10 production in vitro. The objectives of this study were to investigate the -592 A/C polymorphism in patients with and without lupus nephritis and to assess its influence on IL10 secretion in vivo and its role in pathogenesis and clinicopathological characteristics of lupus nephritis. Methods: This case control study was conducted on 40 SLE patients recruited for the study from those attending the nephrology department of the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (outpatient clinic and inpatient ward) in 2013. Patients were divided into two groups, group I (SLE patients without evidence of nephritis) and group II (SLE patients with lupus nephritis). Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 12), a t-test, Chi square, ANOVA, and the Pearson product–moment correlation coefficient. Results: Our study found an increase in IL10 serum in lupus nephritis patients compared to those without renal involvement (without statistical significance). No significant differences emerged in the level of IL10 serum among different pathological classes. Conclusion: The IL10 gene (-592 A/C) polymorphism, though not associated with lupus nephritis’s susceptibility in the present study, does play a role

    Microstructure examination and microhardness of friction stir welded joint of (AA7020-O) after PWHT

    This paper studies the microstructure and microhardness of the welded joints of the annealed aluminum alloy AA7020-O produced by friction stir welding (FSW) technique. The material was applied to post weld heat treatment (solution treatment and artificially aged, T6). The traverse speed and the rotational speed are the most important process parameters of FSW, and have great influence on the heat input of the welding operation which governs the welded joints quality. To investigate their effect, the welding operation was performed using three traverse speeds, 20, 40 and 60 mm/s with two rotational speeds of 1125 and 1400 rpm, and other welding parameters were kept constant to produce comparable joints. It was found that the two rotational speeds are accepted with lower traverse speeds to produce sound joints. Microstructure of the welded joints was significantly affected by the FSW process parameters, and slight effect was reported for the grain size. Microhardness examination showed high weld joint quality with respect to the base metal hardness, which proves the reprecipitation of the hardening phase in the weld zone. The microhardness profile was strongly dependant on the rotational speed, and the average values of the joints hardness have increased with the decrease in the rotational speed, where it have been slightly affected by the welding speed.     Sociocultural Causes of Ambiguity in Arab Academic Writings

    Although ambiguity in written, oral, and visual communication is inevitably present across all human societies and cultures, variation among these societies and cultures occurs in the sociocultural causes of its existence. This study helps formulate a conceptual framework that enables the enrichment of knowledge about this variation. It takes a first step by highlighting Arab-specific reasons behind ambiguity in academic writings in humanities and social sciences. The investigation entails thematically analysing the thoughts of 905 Arabs in academia. The findings point to a ‘doing-the-minimum’ mentality, whereby one may act hastily and impatiently and do just enough for one’s manuscript to be published in any journal, thereby rushing into publication while skimping on quality and diminishing attention to manuscript clarity. Another finding is the ambition for rewards that Arab institutions assign to publication, whereby one may boost their publication records to reap these rewards, resulting in high quantity while sacrificing quality (e.g., clarity). Another reason discovered is the conceptualisation of writing as a formulaic and ‘fill-in-the-blanks’ task (templates to be completed and, thus, manuscripts to be constructed), instilling a focus on technicality instead of cognitive depth and clarity. An additional reason found is the passive application of foreign theories and conceptual frameworks without subjecting them to critical reflection, reapplying foreign surveys and mimicking survey-based articles, thereby making their articles culturally shallow, suffer from cultural irrelevance, and thus, ambiguity. This is along with the integration of poetry (wherein ambiguity is culturally viewed as desirable and showing poets to be sophisticated) into Arabs’ daily social and educational lives and mindsets, encouraging the acceptability of ambiguity as a possible linguistic quality in scholarly writing as well. The social context lacks direct, explicit, and free articulation, encouraging one to resort to roundabout ways of composing their manuscripts, thus, making the manuscripts fall into ambiguity

    Modulatory Impacts of Multi-Strain Probiotics on Rabbits’ Growth, Nutrient Transporters, Tight Junctions and Immune System to Fight against Listeria monocytogenes Infection

    Multi-strain probiotics (MSP) are considered innovative antibiotics’ substitutes supporting superior gut health and immunity of farmed rabbits. The promising roles of MSP on performance, intestinal immunity, integrity and transporters, and resistance against Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) were evaluated. In the feeding trial, 220 rabbits were fed a control diet or diet supplemented with three MSP graded levels. At 60 days of age, rabbits were experimentally infected with L. monocytogenes and the positive control, enrofloxacin, prophylactic MSP (MSPP), and prophylactic and therapeutic MSP (MSPTT) groups were included. During the growing period, MSP at the level of 1 × 108 CFU/kg diet (MSPIII) promoted the rabbits’ growth, upregulated the nutrient transporters and tight-junction-related genes, and modified cytokines expression. Supplementing MSPTT for L. monocytogenes experimentally-infected rabbits restored the impaired growth and intestinal barriers, reduced clinical signs of severity and mortalities, and attenuated the excessive inflammatory reactions. Notably, enrofloxacin decreased L. monocytogenes and beneficial microbial loads; unlike MSPTT, which decreased pathogenic bacterial loads and sustained the beneficial ones. Histopathological changes were greatly reduced in MSPTT, confirming its promising role in restricting L. monocytogenes translocation to different organs. Therefore, our results suggest the use of MSPTT as an alternative to antibiotics, thereby conferring protection for rabbits against L. monocytogenes infection
